Definitions

  • the invention relates to a cylindrical type intervention grenade, usable in particular either as a tear gas grenade or as a smoke grenade, depending on the active pyrotechnic composition put in place, and this grenade comprises at least one block with a central channel of active pyrotechnic composition, which can be ignited by means of an ignition composition internal to the grenade, and being housed in an external box that can be opened under the thrust of the combustion gases, this grenade may be provided with an axial igniter plug attached to the end back.
  • the igniter plugs which equip intervention grenades have a pyrotechnic delay, for example of the order of two to three seconds, before the igniter of these plugs is ignited and produces a directed heat flow in the grenade.
  • the effective functioning of the grenade then requires placing all the blocks of active pyrotechnic composition, called active blocks, in a stable combustion regime, and breaking the outer casing so as to eject these active blocks which are placed inside boxes cylindrical metal with openings for diffusing gases and combustion fumes.
  • the ignition composition covers the entire initial combustion surface of the active blocks, which gives rise to difficulties in production. since it is necessary to coat both the surface of the channel of the block and the free section or sections of this block, and this leads to deposits of ignition composition which have variable thicknesses depending on the initial viscosity of this composition.
  • a relay load generally consisting of one or more pellets of black powder, is then interposed between the metal cans and one of the ends of the outer casing.
  • the ignition composition forms a projection in the central channel of the composition blocks and at least partially obstructs this channel in which the heat flow from the igniter plug.
  • This second technique makes it possible to avoid the use of an internal relay charge while improving the stable combustion of the active blocks, but on the one hand the mass of ignition composition required is substantially equal to the sum of the masses of the ignition composition and the relay charge, and on the other hand this composition mass is not strictly constant and depends on the absorption power of the support which constitutes the projection in the central channel.
  • the present invention aims, on the one hand to reduce the mass of the ignition composition while avoiding the need for a relay charge, and on the other hand to have a constant mass of ignition composition in each grenade produced in large series, and is characterized in that, on the one hand, the central channel of the block is provided with an inner tube which can be destroyed in the thermodynamic conditions of combustion of the block, the ignition coating being limited in the free section of this block, and in that on the other hand the outer casing has an opening resistance which is greater than 2 bars.
  • the inner tube is made of a combustible material and has a thickness of less than 2 millimeters, but such a tube can also be constituted by a thin metal sheet, made of aluminum or tin for example, and this combustible material is advantageously a rigid material. derived from the cellulose, such as celluloid or cellulose acetate.
  • the ignition coating adheres, to the block of active pyrotechnic composition, to the inner tube, and to the internal lateral surface of the container in which the block is placed, and the inner tube can itself be secured at the bottom of the container to form a resistant assembly.
  • this particular implementation can then be supplemented by a spacer which is placed between the coating of ignition and the cover of the container, a tubular spacer being particularly suitable.
  • the external housing of the grenade is a one-piece tube, each end of which is closed by a closure, at least one of these closures can be ejected when the ignition pressure between 2 and 12 bars is reached, and the resistance to the opening of the outer casing can even be increased to 20 bars when the closures have the same resistance to ejection, so that the two closures are ejected almost simultaneously so as not to increase the dispersion of the containers placed in this container too much.
  • each container is a metal box which contains two blocks of active composition stacked one on the other, only the terminal block being covered by an ignition coating.
  • the implementation of the present invention makes it possible in particular to have a mass of the ignition coating which is less than 10%, and even less than 7%, of the mass of the active pyrotechnic composition.
  • the single figure represents substantially on a scale of 1 a tear gas canister whose outer casing (1) is constituted by a monobloc tube (la) made of cardboard on which the front bottom (2) and the rear bottom (3) are set in tin.
  • the rear bottom consists essentially of the igniter cap holder (4) and the stamped crown (5), the outer edge of which is folded down to form a crimp enclosing the end of the monobloc tube, the depth of penetration of this crimp into the cardboard being determined so that the tearing of this rear bottom occurs for an average pressure of 6 bars.
  • the front bottom (2) consists of a stamped disc whose outer edge is folded down to form a crimp which encloses the other end of the monobloc tube, and the penetration depth of this crimp in the carton is determined so that the tearing of this front bottom occurs for an average pressure of 3.5 bars, which allows normal unloading from the front of the grenade, unloading from the rear intervening only exceptionally
  • Two identical metallic cylindrical boxes (6, 7) are arranged, and wedged by means of the washer (8) inside the external box, and the bottoms (9 and 10) of these boxes have an axial opening whose diameter is slightly less than the diameter of the thread of the igniter cap holder (4), while the covers (11, 12) of these boxes have an axial opening whose diameter is greater than the diameter of the opening of the bottoms, and corresponds substantially to the diameter inner tubes (13, 14) of cellulose acetate which are glued to the bottoms (9, 10).
  • Each of these cylindrical boxes (6, 7) comprises two blocks (15, 16) of tear gas composition comprising a central channel whose diameter is greater than the diameter of the axial openings of the boxes, and the ignition coating (17) which is poured on the terminal block (16) adheres to this block, to the inner tube (13) and to the internal lateral surface of the box (7).
  • This ignition coating is produced from a suspension of 12% silicon and 88% minium in a collodion consisting of one part of double base powder (nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine) per ten parts by weight of acetone , and after evaporation of the solvent, the ignition coating forms a hard layer on which can bear the tubular spacer (18) made of cardboard which is interposed between this coating and the cover (11) of the box (7).
  • Such an ignition coating exhibits excellent adhesion to a tear gas composition which is based on an alkaline perchlorate, an organic binder and mineral additives, and the active compound of which is orthochlorobenzaldehydemalononitrile (CS ).
