Claims (8)

1. Melting device and applicator for hot melt adhesive, in particular for edge banding machines for continuously moving workpieces, comprising
a) a melting chamber (4) having a heatable melting wall (5) with discharge openings provided at its end facing away from the applicator (2),
b) a power-operated delivery piston (6) disposed in sliding relationship within the melting chamber for being controlled by the workpiece, and
c) an inlet opening (12) to the melting chamber (4) which communicates with a supply vessel (17) for the solid hot melt adhesive (18) and which can be shut off by a slide gate, characterized in that a power-operated actuating unit (14) is provided for displacing the slide gate which can be operated independently of the delivery piston (6). and that a first limit switch (9) operable by the delivery piston (6) controls the opening movement while a delay element connected therewith controls the closing movement of the slide gate (13).
2. Melting device and applicator according to claim 1, characterized in that the delivery piston (6) can be subjected to an increased working pressure for applying the hot melt adhesive, and to a reduced off-load pressure during the inoperative period of the applicator (2).
3. Melting device and applicator according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the slide gate (13) is provided with a cutting edge (15) at its end facing the inlet opening (12).
4. Melting device and applicator according to claim 3, characterized in that another cutting edge (16) is arranged on the wall (11) of the melting chamber (4) opposite the cutting edge (15) of the slide gate (13).
5. Melting device and applicator according to any of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the supply vessel (17) is detachably connected with the melting chamber (4).
6. Melting device and applicator according to claim 5, characterized in that a slide gate (27) is provided on and connected with the outlet end of the supply vessel (17).
7. Melting device and applicator according to claim 5 or 6, characterized in that the supply vessel (17) is protected by a bar (19') which coacts with a circuit breaker (25) in such a manner that the actuating unit (14) cannot be operated as long as the bar (19') is in its unlocked position.
8. Melting device and applicator according to any of claims 2 to 7, characterized in that a timing relay connected to the first limit switch is arranged for causing a conventional blocking element arranged on the infeed side of the edge banding machine to move into a blocking position in which no further workpieces can be fed in when no granulated hot melt adhesive (18) is present in the melting chamber (4).
