Definitions
- the invention relates to a self-sealing washer, consisting of a spacer ring and an integrally formed sealing ring made of a resilient, constant volume material and with a height that is larger in the relaxed state before installation and in the tensioned state after installation identical to the thickness of the spacer ring.
- a washer of this type is described in Applicant's Catalog 500. It is intended for the sealing and simultaneous support of machine parts pressed vertically against each other, for example the flat surfaces between the head of one Machine screw and the machine part supported thereby. The properties of use are still not entirely satisfactory for several reasons.
- the washer in question consists of a spacer ring with a rectangular profile, on the inner or outer circumference of which a sealing ring is vulcanized depending on the direction in which the pressure is applied.
- the effectiveness therefore does not include the sealing of changing pressure, which is criticized.
- the pressing forces of the sealing ring against the flat surfaces of the sealed machine parts result from the elastic preload force generated by the deformation and the reaction forces of the sealed medium that are superimposed therewith. In this respect, it is not constant when sealing changing pressures and can be affected by fatigue of the elastomeric material of the sealing ring.
- the washer proposed according to the invention is characterized in that the spacer ring is divided into an inner and an outer ring by a circumferential, axially completely separating gap which are concentrically assigned to one another, including a sealing ring made of a constant-volume, resilient material, and which are bridged over Height of the unclamped sealing ring are axially offset from one another, the sealing ring partially or completely filling the gap and at least one conical circumferential clamping surface of the inner and / or the outer ring protruding into it, which is inclined so that with a mutual reduction of the axial Distance between the outer and inner ring results in a theoretical reduction in the volume of the sealing ring.
- the sealing ring is delimited on both sides in the radial and axial directions by the boundary surfaces of the spacer ring formed from the inner and the outer ring.
- This consists of a hard material, for example metal, and is accordingly robust and insensitive to mechanical damage.
- the extent of the profile in the radial direction is almost constant.
- the inner ring and the outer ring can only experience an elastic reduction or expansion of the diameter as a result of the incompressibility of the material of the sealing ring. This results in the axial direction when pressing the sealed surfaces, a reduction in the total height until the thickness of the spacer ring is reached, ie until a point in time at which the inner and outer rings have reached the same plane and together serve to transmit power to the connected machine part.
- the continuous, axially parallel displacement of the wedge-like, tapered clamping surface (s) results in a reduction in the volume of the gap and thereby a pressing of the axial boundary surfaces of the sealing ring against the surfaces to be sealed on both sides.
- the sealing effect achieved can best be compared to hydraulic contact pressure. It is independent of any existing elastic properties of the sealing ring and is therefore independent of material-related signs of fatigue after prolonged loading.
- the reshaping force that improves with increasing elasticity after previous use ensures multiple reusability. This can no longer be guaranteed if the end faces of the sealing ring that come into contact with the machine elements to be sealed have lost their conformability, for example due to pressed-in plugs or the action of the sealed medium. Both are largely dependent on the specific application. Under the conditions of general mechanical engineering, at least double reusability is guaranteed.
- PTFE in particular has proven itself as a thermoplastic material for the production of the sealing ring.
- elastomeric materials those based on acrylonitrile butadiene (NBR) and fluorine rubber (FKM) are particularly suitable.
- the Shore hardness should not exceed the range of Shore A 50 to 90 if possible. If foamed materials are used come, the pore structure should be closed-cell to ensure an internal pressure build-up and thus the required incompressibility. A high thermal resilience can be achieved if the sealing ring is made of a soft metal, preferably solder or copper.
- the desired reduction in volume in terms of the sealing of the gap when the outer and inner rings are pressed axially together can be achieved by a single, conical circumferential clamping surface of the inner or outer ring, which may be sufficient due to the "hydraulic principle" used, if the clamping surface forms only part of the axial width of the surface of the inner or outer ring delimiting the gap, while the remaining remaining part is aligned axially parallel.
- the forces exerted by the sealing ring on the adjoining parts and thus also on the sealed surfaces after the gap has been reduced are specifically the same in all areas, and it is therefore of no functional importance if the surface of the interior and / or the outer ring is interrupted by a plurality of clamping surfaces arranged one behind the other in the axial direction.
- the pressing forces of the sealing ring exerted on the machine elements to be sealed result from the reduction in volume of the gap receiving the sealing ring during the axial pressing of the inner and outer rings.
- the reduction in population is largely determined by the angle that the clamping surfaces enclose with the direction of the forces introduced into the associated inner or outer ring and by the proportion of the clamping surface in the total contact area between the inner and outer ring with the sealing ring.
- a comparable sealing effect can therefore be achieved by varied variation of the special design.
- the washer according to the invention can be used like a conventional washer and can have its dimensions. It also seals the gap against the subsequent machine parts against liquids and gases and can be used repeatedly.
- the sealing effect achieved is based on the fact that the spacer ring is divided into an inner ring 2 and an outer ring 1 by a circumferential, completely separating gap, which are concentrically assigned to one another and which, by bridging the unstressed state, have a greater overall height than the spacer ring having an axial seal are offset from each other.
- the Sealing ring consists of a resilient material, for example rubber, plastic or soft metal, while the outer and inner rings consist of a hard, as non-compliant material as possible, for example steel, in order to ensure good support of the connected machine part.
- the dimensioning must be such that the compressive stress or tensile stress generated by the deformation of the sealing ring in the inner or outer ring does not exceed the elastic limit of the material used, so that disadvantageous plastic deformation is avoided.
- the gap between the outer and the inner ring is completely filled by the sealing ring 3, and the gap is at least partially narrowed by at least one conical circumferential clamping surface of the inner and / or the outer ring, which is inclined so that when the axial displacement of the inner and outer ring results in a theoretical reduction in the volume enclosed in the space.
- an internal force is built up in the sealing ring, by means of which an axial pressing of the end faces on both sides against the subsequent machine parts and thereby a sealing is effected, which is elastic due to the corresponding elastic radial expansion of the outer ring or radial compression of the inner ring.
- the pressing process as such follows the hydraulic principle, whereby the same pressing forces are achieved in all areas of the end faces. Irregularities on the surface of the machine parts to be sealed are thereby bridged in an excellent manner and good tightness is achieved, which is independent of the direction of the pressurization and of pressure fluctuations or pressure changes.
- the amount of the contact pressure is essentially dependent on the theoretical volume reduction of the gap which results when the originally existing axial offset of the inside and the Outer ring is balanced by their mutual axial compression and the elastic properties of the inner and outer ring.
- a good sealing effect and good reusability is achieved under the conditions of general mechanical engineering if the clamping surfaces are designed so that there is a theoretical volume reduction of 5 to 30%, preferably 10 to 20%,

Abstract
