Abstract

The invention relates to an easy chair having two positions. Its support comprises two frames connected together by spacers. The arm of each frame is provided with two notches. The longitudinal elements of the seat position each comprise a notch and a projection, while the uprights of the backrest are provided with a hook and a stop. When the notches in the longitudinal elements cooperate with a spacer located between the front legs of the support and the stops of the backrest cooperate with the rear notches in the arms, the easy chair is in low position. In high position, the projections at the front of the longitudinal elements are retained by the notches at the front of the arms of the support and the hooks behind the backrest abut around a spacer located between the rear legs at the top thereof. The invention is more particularly applicable to garden and outside furniture.

Description

The present invention relates to improvements made to armchairs which are used on terraces, in gardens and other outdoor places.

Seats of the type in question are generally arranged in such a way that their backs are so inclined with respect to the seat surface that the user is largely tipped back and seated relatively close to the ground. It is easily understood that such armchairs cannot be used around a table if the users wish to use the latter for one reason or another. Under these conditions, it is necessary to provide a second set of seats of suitable height with respect to a table and the back of which is relatively straight. This leads to significant additional costs and storage difficulties by increasing the volume of items to be stored during the bad season.

To overcome these difficulties, two-position armchairs have already been proposed, such as that described in Swiss patent CH-A No 318157. The armchair considered comprises a base formed by two frames assembled by spacers and an independent seat-back assembly which can occupy two positions:
  • - a high position in which the user can sit around a table, the seat-back assembly being held at its front part by means of two clean projections located at the front of the seat to come to rest against the bottom of notches arranged at the front and inside the side frames of the base, and, at its rear part, by means of a spacer placed between the side frames of the base and at the rear of the latter, and
  • - a low position in which the chair allows the user to rest, the seat-back assembly being supported at its front part by means of a spacer placed between the lateral frames of the base, at the front of this the latter, on which the seat rests, the rear part of the seat-back assembly being supported by the back.

Also known, according to British patent GB-A No 140161, an armchair comprising a seat articulated to a backrest, the seat-back assembly can occupy several positions relative to the base. To this end, hooks arranged on the rear of the backrest cooperate with a first cross member of the base, while the front part of the seat rests by means of a rack on another cross member of the base parallel to the first cross member .

The improvements are the subject of the present invention to overcome the disadvantages of the chair revealed by the Swiss patent CH-A N 6 318157, which does not have a precise position of the seat and backrest in relation to base position low, so that this set is unstable, which is unpleasant for the user. The invention also makes it possible to produce an armchair of the type in question, the seat of which is articulated to the backrest so that the angle of these two elements is different in the high and low positions.

The chair according to the invention has two articulated parts, one constituting the seat surface and the other the backrest, its base being provided with means for supporting the two articulated parts at two different positions from them, it is that is to say that at the first of these positions the seat surface is low and the backrest relatively inverted, while the second corresponds to a higher position of the seat surface, the backrest being straightened more.

According to the invention, in the low position, two lateral stops arranged on the side of each of the uprights of the backrest, approximately halfway up the latter, come to rest against the bottom of the notches formed at the rear end of each of the two arms. forming the upper part of the two lateral frames, while in the upper position a hook open downwards, arranged on the rear part of each of the lateral uprights of the backrest, between the articulation of the seat-backrest and the projection, comes lean on the spacer.

The appended drawing, given by way of example, will allow a better understanding of the invention, the characteristics which it presents and the advantages which it is capable of providing.
  • Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an armchair established in accordance with the invention;
  • fig. 2 and 3 illustrate a side view of the two positions of this chair;
  • fig. 4 is a perspective view of an ottoman according to the invention, designed to cooperate with the chair in its two positions, and
  • fig. 5 and 6 illustrate how the pouffe is used in the two positions of the chair according to the invention.

There is shown in fig. 1 a chair established in accordance with the invention and which comprises two main elements, either an articulated seat 1 and a base 2. The seat is in two parts, or a seat surface 3 and a backrest 4. It can be observed that this can be extended upwards by a headrest 5. The seat surface and the backrest 4 are produced by means of two rails 6, 7 and two uprights 8, 9 respectively, which are hinged in pairs around an axis 10. Crosspieces referenced 11 to 15 are used to maintain the spacing of the side members 6, 7 and the uprights 8, 9, so that we can stretch between them sheets 16, 17 corresponding to the seat surface 3 and the backrest 4. These layers are preferably made in the form of a net made from synthetic yarns, so that it is rot-proof.

On observe que l'entaille en question se trouve située à l'arrière du bras et au voisinage du pied arrière 18c, 19c de chaque cadre 18,19.The base 2 is produced by means of two frames 18, 19, of rectangular shape, joined by spacers 20, 21 and 22 ensuring their spacing. These spacers can be made of any suitable material, for example plastic or stainless metal. The upper side of each frame constitutes an arm or armrest 18a, thanks to a lateral extension 18b, respectively 19b, which widens considerably the upper side of the arm in question. It is observed that each arm 18a, 19a is provided with a notch 23 formed in the internal face and which has a reduced depth. It is observed that the notch in question is located at the rear of the arm and in the vicinity of the rear leg 18c, 19c of each frame 18,19.

Each arm 18a, 19a is also provided with a second notch 24 produced from its inner face, above the front leg 18d, 19d of each frame. This cut ends in a narrowed lower end, as will be better explained later.

Each of the side members 6, 7 of the seat surface 3 is provided with a lateral projection 25 projecting outwards and having a relatively reduced thickness in the vertical direction, so that it is capable of coming to cooperate, practically without lateral play, with the lower part of the notch 24 of each of the frames 18, 19 of the base 2, as illustrated in fig. 2. It is understood that, the opening upwards of this notch being flared, this facilitates the positioning of the projection 25. The two uprights 8 and 9 of the backrest 4 are provided, on their rear face, with a hook 26 (Fig. 1 and 2) intended to engage around the spacer 20 of the base uniting the two rear upper angles of the two frames. As illustrated in fig. 2, an armchair is thus obtained whose seat surface is at such a distance from the ground that its user can easily sit around a table as if he were using an ordinary chair.

2.On the contrary, if the user wishes to rest, he raises the articulated seat 1 by extracting the projections 25 from the notches 24 and by releasing the hooks 26 from the spacer 20. The articulated seat is then lowered, the projections 24 being arranged at the front of the feet 18d, 19d of the frames 18, 19, so that they cannot hinder the movement in question. Notches 27, formed in the lower part of the side members 6 and 7 of the seat surface 3, then come to surround the spacer 21 arranged roughly between the middle of each of the legs 18d, 19d. The hooks 26 escaping beforehand from the spacer 20, lateral stops 28 carried by the outside of the uprights 8 and 9 are easily brought into the notches 23 (fig. 3). It will be noted that the backrest 4 and its headrest 5 then form with the seat surface an angle clearly greater than that which these elements determine when the articulated seat is in the position of FIG. 2.

5, c'est-à-dire sur la cloison 32.In order to improve the comfort of the user, provision is made to add to the chair according to the invention a pouffe 29, illustrated in FIG. 4, which comprises two frames 30, 31 of rectangular shape joined, at two of their adjacent sides, by perforated partitions 32, 33 without solution of continuity. The width and length of the frames 30, 31 correspond approximately to the distance separating the edge of the seat surface 3 of the chair previously described in one or other of its positions, as illustrated in FIG. 5 and 6. In other words, the width of the frames in question is such that the user seated in the chair in the low position can place his legs on the larger of the two faces of the ottoman, as illustrated in FIG. 5, that is to say on the partition 32.

6.If the pouffe 29 is placed with its short sides on the floor, the user can extend his legs on the other partition 33 when the chair is in the high position, as illustrated in FIG. 6.

It is observed that the frames 30 and 31 are divergent opposite the partition 32, so that the poufs thus obtained are stackable. Under these conditions, the partition 33 assumes the shape of an isosceles trapezium.

A two-position armchair and the pouffe which can be added to it have thus been produced in a simple and economical manner. All these elements preferably made of molded plastic are rot-proof so that such furniture can remain outside regardless of the weather.

Although the armchair has been described as having a seat surface and a backrest produced by means of a net, the uprights 6 and 7 as well as 8 and 9 could be part of a single molded part.
