Definitions
- fabric softeners have so far been generally used in the form of dilute, about 2 to 10% aqueous solutions.
- these diluted solutions have several disadvantages. You can e.g. should not be stored cold, because after freezing and thawing, they assume a gel consistency and can no longer be brought into homogeneous solution.
- Suitable cationic softening constituents of the fabric softener concentrates according to the invention are the quaternary ammonium compounds known for this use and containing lipophilic radicals, as described, for example, in Chemistry and Industry, July 1969, page 893/894, especially those compounds which are represented by the general formulas I , II and III are characterized.
- these cationic softening components are expediently in the form of their concentrated solutions used in lower alcohols, preferably isopropanol or in a mixture of these alcohols with water.
- the concentrates according to the invention therefore contain a certain amount of such lower alcohols.
- a further essential component are reaction products from a fatty acid ethanolamide with ethylene oxide of the formula IV where R 4 is alkyl or alkenyl radicals with 8-22, preferably 8-16 carbon atoms, R 3 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical with 1-3 carbon atoms, in particular hydrogen or methyl,
- p is a number from 1 to 5, preferably 2 and Y is a number from 1 to 15, preferably 5-8, used as nonionic dispersants. It is essential that this is a nitrogenous substance that has a pseudo-cationic character. As such, the substantivity of this type of compound on tissue is too weak. In combination with a quaternary ammonium compound of the formulas I - III, the non-ionic compound mentioned is absorbed onto the laundry and gives the fiber an additional soft feel. At the same time, these nonionic types of plasticizers also act as dispersants or emulsifiers.
- nonionic dispersants are customary nonionic dispersants or emulsifiers based on oxalkylates, which contribute to the fact that the concentrate is readily dispersible in cold water.
- Suitable nonionic dispersants are, for example, reaction products of in each case about 2-12 mol of ethylene oxide with an alkylphenol, such as xylenol, but also with an alkylphenol with a long alkyl radical of 8-10 carbon atoms or with a fatty alcohol with 8 to 15 carbon atoms, in particular reaction products of about 5 to 8 mol of EO with 1 mol of alkylphenol or 1 mol of a fatty alcohol containing 8 to 15 carbon atoms or a mixture of such fatty alcohols.
- the medium concentrates according to the invention can be prepared by simply mixing the components or their concentrated solutions. If necessary, perfume, dye, optical brighteners or other auxiliaries can also be added to the concentrate. To set the desired final concentration, it may be diluted with the necessary amount of water. The amounts of the individual components a) to e) are chosen within the limits specified so that the finished concentrate, including any additional amounts of water, perfume and colorants, gives 100% by weight.
- the amount of the fabric softener concentrate according to the invention is about 10-20 q per 4 kg of laundry. In terms of the softening effect, this corresponds to an amount of about 50 to 100 ml of a commercially available fabric softener with 5% WS.
- the laundry fabric softener concentrates according to the invention which have good softening properties, can be dispersed well in cold water without causing troublesome gel formation. It is advantageous here that these concentrates can be fed directly into household machines with suitable metering devices. This good solubility also allows the concentrates according to the invention to be diluted shortly before they are put into the washing machine, so that the fabric softening agents can now be treated in the concentrated form according to the invention and no longer as diluted aqueous solutions as before. This eliminates the need for all levels of the trade having to transport larger, ultimately unnecessary amounts of water.
- a liquid fabric softener concentrate is produced by intensively mixing the following components:
- the product is clearly liquid and can be dispersed in cold water.
- 10 g of the fabric softener concentrate according to Example 1 are comparable in the achieved softening effect to about 80 ml of a commercially available liquid fabric softener with an active substance content of 5% by weight.
- Laundry softener concentrates of the following composition are produced in the same way as described in Example 1

Description
It is known that certain cationic quaternary ammonium compounds, when added in the final rinse of the washing machine, can be used in various types of fabrics, e.g. Cotton, wool, cotton-synthetic blend, give a good grip and at the same time antistatic properties. However, there are certain difficulties in producing formulations of these fabric softening agents with a higher concentration and distributing them evenly in the cold washing liquor, because when softeners are added in the form of concentrated aqueous or alcoholic solutions, gelatinous precipitates occur which can lead to the formation of stains on the laundry. It is also difficult to dilute such a concentrate to a commercially available 2-5% formulation. Usually a gel-like mixture is obtained which is difficult or impossible to disperse in cold water.
Therefore, fabric softeners have so far been generally used in the form of dilute, about 2 to 10% aqueous solutions. However, these diluted solutions have several disadvantages. You can e.g. should not be stored cold, because after freezing and thawing, they assume a gel consistency and can no longer be brought into homogeneous solution.
Another disadvantage is the high excess water content of these solutions.
It has now been found that it is possible to produce liquid, concentrated preparations of fabric softeners which do not have these disadvantages of the dilute solutions and which are readily distributed even in cold rinse water.

In diesen Formeln bedeuten:
- R 1 and R 2 are alkyl or alkenyl radicals with 8 to 20 carbon atoms, in particular radicals of the C chain distribution as they occur in coconut fatty acid alkyl, tallow fatty acid alkyl, oleic acid alkyl, sperm oil fatty acid alkyl,
- R 3 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, in particular hydrogen or methyl, x numbers from 1 to 5, preferably 1, m and n 2 or 3, preferably 2, A chlorine or bromine, preferably chlorine, and Y chlorine or methosulfate .
When preparing the liquid fabric softener concentrates according to the invention, these cationic softening components are expediently in the form of their concentrated solutions used in lower alcohols, preferably isopropanol or in a mixture of these alcohols with water. The concentrates according to the invention therefore contain a certain amount of such lower alcohols.
Gleichzeitig wirken diese nichtionischen Weichmachertypen auch als Dispergatoren oder Emulgatoren.p is a number from 1 to 5, preferably 2 and Y is a number from 1 to 15, preferably 5-8, used as nonionic dispersants.
Another component of the fabric softener concentrates according to the invention are customary nonionic dispersants or emulsifiers based on oxalkylates, which contribute to the fact that the concentrate is readily dispersible in cold water. Suitable nonionic dispersants are, for example, reaction products of in each case about 2-12 mol of ethylene oxide with an alkylphenol, such as xylenol, but also with an alkylphenol with a long alkyl radical of 8-10 carbon atoms or with a fatty alcohol with 8 to 15 carbon atoms, in particular reaction products of about 5 to 8 mol of EO with 1 mol of alkylphenol or 1 mol of a fatty alcohol containing 8 to 15 carbon atoms or a mixture of such fatty alcohols.
The medium concentrates according to the invention can be prepared by simply mixing the components or their concentrated solutions.
The amount of the fabric softener concentrate according to the invention is about 10-20 q per 4 kg of laundry. In terms of the softening effect, this corresponds to an amount of about 50 to 100 ml of a commercially available fabric softener with 5% WS.
The laundry fabric softener concentrates according to the invention, which have good softening properties, can be dispersed well in cold water without causing troublesome gel formation.
