Definitions
- thermosetting, ether group-containing plastic coatings lies in their oxidative susceptibility, which leads to embrittlement of the protective layer and thus, especially with reusable bottles, no longer guarantees splinter protection after some time.
- glass surfaces can also be coated without the disadvantages described at the outset, if inart'däs method for coating glass bottles in particular to prevent the scattering of glass particles when bursting, with a transparent, thermosetting protective layer of more than 50 ⁇ m by applying Compositions made from polyisocyanates and compounds containing hydroxyl groups, as well as customary processing additives and curing of the coating at elevated temperatures, in such a way that the pure glass surface is first treated and dried with an aqueous or alcoholic silane sizing agent, and then the treated glass surface is then treated with a composition of aliphatic and / or cycloaliphatic diisocyanates or their reaction products with water in a molar ratio of 2 :: - 5 1 and a trifunctional, hydroxyl-containing polyester with an average molecular weight of 300-1400 from w-hydroxycarboxylic acids or their lactones with mi At least 4 carbon atoms and triplets are coated and cured, whereupon up to 90% by weight
- the trifunctional polyesters preferably have an average molecular weight of 500-800 and the bifunctional polyesters have an average molecular weight of 500-1200.
- the plastic protective layer applied in this way is highly elastic and shows excellent adhesion, so that when the glass breaks or the bottle bursts, the glass fragments remain inside the protective layer. After the glass bottle is destroyed, the bottle shape remains intact. The kinetic energy that occurs is converted by stretching and heating the plastic coating.
- the resistance of the coating to hot, alkali-containing rinsing liquors, in which the bottles are cleaned before the drinks are filled, is particularly advantageous. This is particularly true for reusable bottles that are subjected to intensive cleaning before each filling process.
- the advantage of the coating according to the invention is that even after repeated rinsing in the hot, alkaline wash liquor, there are no losses in the mechanical characteristics and no loss of liability.
- the glass bottles provided with such a plastic coating can be used without hesitation as containers for carbonated beverages, since there is no longer any danger to humans when they break or burst.
- the service life of a coated bottle is significantly longer than that of the uncoated bottle, which due to the movements by rubbing against each other on sharp edges and rinsing processes in hot solutions are heavily stressed or slightly damaged.
- the cleaned glass surface becomes one, for example Glass bottle first treated with an aqueous or alcoholic silane sizing agent.
- silanes with residues are used, which are assigned to two different functional groups. These are, on the one hand, lower alkoxy radicals, in particular methoxy and ethoxy radicals, which react with the OH groups on the glass surface and, on the other hand, organic radicals with functional groups which can react with the isocyanate groups, such as amino, epoxy, mercapto groups, etc., eg y-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane, glycidyloxypropyltriethoxysilane, y-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane, y-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane, etc.
- the glass surface can be treated, for example, by dipping or spraying with the sizing agent.
- the bottles treated in this way can either be dried separately at 25-100 ° C or they are dried by heating the glass bottle to 80-100 ° C, ie to a temperature that occurs during bottle production during the cooling process.
- the solvent-free PUR two-component coating compositions described below are applied to the pretreated, preheated glass bottles by known methods, such as pouring, spraying, dipping and the like. ⁇ .
- the heat supply can be continued after the application of the coating materials until the reaction is complete, if the available heat capacity should not be sufficient for curing itself.
- the glass bottle coated in this way is then subjected to the actual hardening at a temperature in the range from 150-240 ° C., preferably 180-210 ° C.

Siefken in Justus Liebigs Annalen der Chemie 562, pages 75-136, such as 1,2-ethylenediisocyanate and 1-tetramethylene diisocyanate , 4, 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate, 2,2,4- or 2,4,4-trimethylhexamethylene diisocyanate (TMDI), dodecane diisocyanate-1,12, ⁇ , ⁇ '-diisocyanatodipropyl ether, lysine diisocyanate, cy- ) Obutane-1,3-diisocyanate, cyclohexane-1,3 and 1,4-diisocyanate, 3-isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexyl isocyanate, which is also called isophorone diisocyanate and
- isocyanates are described in the article mentioned in the annals on page 122f. described. Mixtures of the isocyanates can of course also be used. Also suitable are the reaction products of these diisocyanates with water in a molar ratio of 2: ⁇ 1, in particular that described in DT-OS 2,341,065.
- the reaction of the polyester with the diisocyanate is carried out in such amounts that there are 0.8-1.2, preferably 0.95-1.1 isocyanate groups per 1 OH group.
- Trifunctional, hydroxyl-containing polyesters made from ⁇ -hydroxycarboxylic acids or their lactones are particularly suitable for producing the solvent-free PUR two-component coatings, trifunctional polyesters being understood as meaning those having 3 OH groups.
- the molecular weight of the polyester should be in the range given.
- the hydroxycarboxylic acid or its lactones have at least 4 carbon atoms in the chain. Those with 7 C atoms can be used as the upper limit.
- suitable lactones include y-butyrolactone, a-valerolactone, e-caprolactone, methyl caprolactone, etc. £
- lactone polyester polyols can be prepared in a known manner by a process described in US Pat. Nos. 2,890,208, 2,977,885 or 2,933,478, in which triols are reacted with the lactones as initiators with heating, with or without a catalyst.
- Suitable triols are, for example, glycerol, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolethane, triethan laminate and the like.
- the hydroxyl-containing polyesters which can be used according to the invention can also be prepared from the corresponding ⁇ -hydroxycarboxylic acids and triols by known processes.
- the trifunctional polyester can also be replaced by bifunctional, i.e. H. those with 2 OH groups.
- bifunctional i.e. H. those with 2 OH groups.
- the initiators used are diols, such as ethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, 1,2-and 1,3-propylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol and 1,3-1,6-hexane, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and the like.
- mixtures of the trifunctional and bifunctional hydroxyl-containing polyesters in particular were investigated, the mixing ratio being between 90:10 and 10:90, preferably 80:20 to 40:60. These figures are percentages by weight.
- the reaction between polyisocyanate and hydroxyl-containing polyester can be started or accelerated by catalysts.
- Suitable are: organometallic compounds such as tin and zinc octoate, di-n-butyltin dilaurate, di-n-butyltin diacetate, etc.
- leveling agents are added to the preparation to improve the leveling properties of the coatings.
- These agents can be chemical compounds or their mixtures of different chemical types, for example polymeric or monomeric compounds, zBAcetals; Ethers, copolymers of n-butyl acrylate and vinyl isobutyl ether, silicone resins, fluorinated alkyl esters, etc.
- Leveling agents can be added to the formulations in amounts of 0.05-0.5% by weight, based on the total batch.
- the coating composition can also contain customary additives, such as dyes, stabilizers, defoamers, etc. which are soluble in the polyols.
- customary additives such as dyes, stabilizers, defoamers, etc. which are soluble in the polyols.
- the isocyanate can fluctuate within a wide range. The quantity depends on the requirements for the quality of the coatings.
- components A and B are mixed intimately and evacuated until no more bubbles appear. If necessary, the mixing and degassing process must be carried out at elevated temperatures, depending on the viscosity.

Then component B - the hardener - was added, mixed and again evacuated until there were no bubbles.
- the coating material was first applied to untreated glass plates preheated to 80-100 ° C. in order to produce foils for determining the mechanical characteristics and for the stability tests such as washing water and tropical tests and sterilization. For adhesion tests and drop tests, glass plates and bottles pretreated with silane size and preheated to 80-100 ° C were coated.

Description
- Waschlaugentest: 4gewichtsprozentige NaOH, 0,4gewichtsprozentige Na-glyconat, 1 Zyklus: 30 Minuten/80°C
- Tropentest: 70°C/100% rel. LF
- Sterilisation: 121 °C/2h
