Definitions
- “Stoichiometric combustion” is understood to mean one in which neither soot (measured according to BACHARACH: zero soot number) nor a significant proportion of oxygen in the combustion gases occurs (oxygen content in the order of 0.01 to 0.1%).
- the regulation can also relate to substoichiometric combustion to produce a reducing atmosphere in which relatively high CO contents (5-6%) occur without soot formation.
- “Liquid fuels” are understood to mean, in particular, heating oils. These can be heating oils EL, L or S. The corresponding viscosity values of these fuels are according to DIN ')
- the method according to the invention now makes it possible to wide load ranges to perform stoichiometric combustion. It is astonishing that stoichiometric combustion can be guaranteed, especially in the lower load range and even when a continuous jet of compact fuel is generated.
- the mixing zone or the channel can be designed such that the cross-section is the same everywhere from the mouth of the fuel nozzle to the transition into the combustion zone.
- the channel is preferably formed as a cylinder.
- the change in the air supply cross-section can be achieved in a simple manner by connecting the casing surrounding the duct to an air supply duct on the side facing away from the mixing zone, and by using control devices on the outside of the casing to change the cross section of the openings in the casing.
- a sliding sleeve can be attached to the inside of the jacket, which covers an opening or openings with a changing passage cross section. This sliding sleeve should preferably be operated from the outside.
- Light fuel oils are preferred as fuel because of their purity. However, it is easily possible to use heavy fuel oil qualities, especially when using oil preheating.
- the oil droplets are further broken up in the mixing chamber.
- the resulting fuel-air mixture then enters a combustion chamber 120, in which the actual combustion takes place.
- the ignition is provided by a pilot burner with ignition electrode 122.
- a UV detector 121 is used for monitoring.
- a solenoid valve 124 is switched via a control line 123, which interrupts the fuel supply.
- the diagram in FIG. 2 shows the relationships between the most important parameters.
- the abscissa shows which atomization pressure p corresponds to a specific oil throughput.
- the required air requirement for combustion air is also plotted. This ratio is based on certain nozzle dimensions.
- the measured values in the diagram are on a commercially available Spraymaster nozzle, item no. 113, No. 80 (manufacturer Fuelmaster, The Hague, The Netherlands).
- the droplet size (SMD) is plotted on the ordinate in a curve 1, which is calculated according to the formula from SA U T E R (1). It is readily apparent that the droplet size increases more and more towards lower pressures and correspondingly lower throughputs, until it finally becomes "infinitely" large, which corresponds to a continuous, uninterrupted jet.
- the diagram according to FIG. 2 can therefore be seen conclude that it is necessary to empirically determine what air velocities are achieved when entering the combustion chamber in order to effectively reduce the droplet size. In any case, it is not possible to achieve a blue flame or effective stoichiometric combustion with droplets that are larger than 50 ⁇ m on average.
- the droplets can be reduced in size by atomizing air, which is not supplied under so-called critical pressure conditions, but which is supplied, for example, at a pressure of 0.3 ... 0.1 bar or less.
- the nozzle 6 is in turn connected to a conclusion part 21, which opens with a conically shaped opening 22 in the direction of a burner tube 23.
- the end part 21 is preferably part of a wall of a boiler or the like.
- the lance 118 is elongated and centrally equipped with a line 125.
- the lance protrudes with its rear end out of the housing 1 and is provided there with two connections, namely an oil line connection 41 and a gas connection 42.
- the lance which is arranged displaceably within the housing 1, has a threaded body 43 on its outside , which is provided with a spiral groove guide 44.
- the speed of the combustion air is also slower, so that the droplet sizes that emerge from the nozzle are no longer shredded as much as is the case with the position according to FIG. 4a.
- the combustion air hits droplets in a relatively small volume at high speed, which are relatively large due to the lower pressure p in the line 125. Yes, it is even possible to use the combustion air to smash a continuous jet to such an extent that it is burned stoichiometrically in the subsequent combustion chamber.
- the airways and the fuel mist are shown by the dashed arrows and the cone indicated by the dashed lines.
- FIG. 6 shows a further embodiment in which the mixing zone 7 is connected by a sleeve 53 connected to the end part 21 and having a rotatable inner bush.
- the inner sleeve 50 is provided with holes 51 which, when coincident with corresponding holes 52 of the fixed outer sleeve 53, give maximum air passage when the sleeve 51 is rotated with respect to the outer part, the holes are increasingly closed, so that the air supply is finally reduced to a minimum is.
- the bushing is rotated via an actuator 60, which makes the bushing 50 rotatable via a gearwheel. This can be done internally half of the mixing chamber 7 achieve a varied possibility of influencing the fuel jet coming from the nozzle 4 by the combustion air.
- FIG. 8 represents the constructive possibility of providing a displaceable inner bushing 50 ′′ with fixed supports with slots 52 in the region of the wall of the mixing chamber 7, which has several slots 55 ′ with different cross sections is provided.
- the bushing 50 ′′ is moved with the aid of a linkage 61, the slots 52 can be variably exposed and the air supply can thereby be controlled.

Description
The invention relates to a method for controlling an essentially stoichiometric combustion of liquid fuels in a burner arrangement, in which a jet of compact or atomized fuel is generated with the aid of an opening or nozzle (e.g. injection, pressure or rotary atomizer nozzle) is fed into a mixing zone and atomization zone in accordance with the preferably controllable nozzle inlet pressure, in which at least part of the combustion air is supplied as an atomization medium from the side of the fuel jet axis, the flow of which is controllable according to throughput and speed, and with subsequent combustion of the fuel-air mixture in a combustion zone adjoining the mixing zone.
Die entsprechenden Viskositätswerte dieser Brennstoffe sind gemäß DIN ')“Stoichiometric combustion” is understood to mean one in which neither soot (measured according to BACHARACH: zero soot number) nor a significant proportion of oxygen in the combustion gases occurs (oxygen content in the order of 0.01 to 0.1%). The regulation can also relate to substoichiometric combustion to produce a reducing atmosphere in which relatively high CO contents (5-6%) occur without soot formation. "Liquid fuels" are understood to mean, in particular, heating oils. These can be heating oils EL, L or S. The corresponding viscosity values of these fuels are according to DIN ')
In the case of oils, the viscosity drops sharply with the heating, so that under certain circumstances a heavy heating oil can become a heating oil with the viscosity properties of a medium-weight heating oil. However, waste oils, sludge-like fuels and the like are also suitable for combustion.
The combustion process with two-stage atomization mentioned at the outset is practiced, for example, in a burner according to US Pat. No. 3,870,456. In this and other burners, which are operated with the liquid fuels mentioned, it is essential to feed the energy-carrying liquid in the most finely divided form possible in the combustion zone in order to be able to gasify it more easily. In the stoichiometric combustion of low-viscosity fuels, a so-called blue flame is generally achieved, which indicates that there is practically no excess carbon. Blue flames generally require that the size of the droplets during atomization of the fuel fall below a fixed value depending on the fuel. The flame spectrum can also be shifted to yellow in the case of stoichiometric combustion if highly viscous, ash-rich or slightly contaminated fuels are burned.
- a) Zeratäubungscharakteristik der Düse;
- b) Viskosität des Brennstoffes;
- o) Oberflächenspannung des Brennstoffes;
- a) atomizing characteristics of the nozzle;
- b) viscosity of the fuel;
- o) surface tension of the fuel;
- d) pressure p or at the nozzle inlet
- e) fuel throughput that is closely related to pressure.
In the distribution of the droplet size that occurs during pressure atomization, a so-called mean droplet diameter according to SAUTER is defined in that the mean droplet diameter has the same specific surface area as the diameter of the droplet.

In fact, different droplet sizes occur during atomization according to a distribution function. Typical droplet sizes for the same input pressure are according Kaemper (oil and gas firing magazine; 1972; p 490) microns at Injektionszerstäubern at 60 microns pressure atomizer nozzles at 100, otationszerstäuberdüsen wherein R 250 microns.
(Kämper, loc.cit.).In a two-stage atomizer on which the method according to the invention is based, the fuel jet, which enters the mixing chamber undisturbed, for example as an oil mist with a conical expansion in space, is subjected to an atomizing medium from the side of the axis. It is all or part of the burn air supply; all of the combustion air is preferably used as the atomizing medium. The gaseous medium is added at a relative speed to the droplets flying on average in the axial direction. The energy or the momentum which is communicated to the flying oil droplets by the atomizing medium is therefore dependent on the relative speed between the oil droplets and the atomizing medium. Since it can be assumed on average that all oil droplets move in the axial direction, the relative speed to this axial direction is obviously the reference variable if the interaction between the atomizing medium and the oil droplets can be estimated to a large extent. In this consideration it can be neglected that even if there is no atomizing medium, the oil droplets are not only atomized at the atomizing nozzle, but are also broken up as they pass through the "stationary" atmosphere of the mixing chamber. After all, the speed at which the droplets detach from the nozzle is approximately between 40 to 60 m / sec.
The atomizing medium acts on the droplets in motion. Here, deforming forces act on the surface of the drops, which are counteracted by the internal cohesive forces of the liquid. If the surface tension caused by this is less than the external pressure, the drop is deformed until it divides. The surface tension increases with the reduction. The newly formed droplets round up; with sufficient energy, there may be a further division.
Basically, with any nozzle atomization system, a coarse to fine atomization of the liquid fuels can be achieved by changing the inlet pressure. However, primary atomization requires which should lead to very small droplets, high energy when the fuel is pressed in. It is therefore more economical to provide secondary atomization for further atomization.
However, up to now secondary atomization had only been considered from the point of view of droplet size reduction by about an order of magnitude. In the burner mentioned at the outset, this was achieved by using heating oil EL with a primary atomization of the droplets into droplets about 50 µm in size. With optimally set conditions of secondary atomization, the droplet size could be reduced on average to 5 .mu.m. However, this required the atomizing medium to be under critical pressure, i.e. at a specific speed of sound, through which the atomizing nozzles were pushed in. The high pressure required relatively expensive fans and a high level of energy, which undermined the economy of the known combustion process.
With the desired stoichiometric combustion, which was also possible under different load ranges when using the known burner, the oxygen content and the number of soot could be reduced to a minimum not previously known in commercial burners. These results should also be achieved when the new combustion process is used, but the cost-effectiveness is increased and the control range is to be expanded.
It is therefore the task of specifying a method for the control of a preferably stoichiometric (possibly sub-stoichiometric) combustion, in which the oil mist that comes to the combustion occurs at different Operating conditions receives such an average droplet diameter so that a soot-free and practically oxygen-free or reducing combustion gas is generated.
This object is achieved in that the pressure of the fuel at the inlet of the fuel nozzle and the average relative speed of the combustion air introduced as the atomizing medium can be set in inverse proportion to one another compared to the compact or atomized fuel guided in a jet.
The entire combustion air is preferably used as the atomizing medium in order to use its energy content as completely as possible. This also means that only a relatively low air pressure has to be maintained for the incoming combustion air. Another major advantage is that the fuel particles are completely homogeneously mixed with the air and a very short burn-out time is achieved.
As the quoted equation (1) clearly shows for the SMD, the droplet size depends on the inlet pressure or throughput. The regulation of the heat output of the burner, however, requires that larger or smaller throughput quantities of fuel are sprayed in, the regulation being carried out via the oil pressure or the change in the power cross section. So far, it has been accepted as a fact that stoichiometric combustion was impossible if the pressure fell below a certain level because the atomization stage supplied resulted in an excess of air. For this reason, the previously common two-stage burners were essentially only operated at full load.
The method according to the invention now makes it possible to wide load ranges to perform stoichiometric combustion. It is astonishing that stoichiometric combustion can be guaranteed, especially in the lower load range and even when a continuous jet of compact fuel is generated.
The method according to the invention is based on the basic idea that the initial droplet size is reduced and that the energy to be applied for this must be applied by the atomization medium supplied in the second stage. However, since in stoichiometric combustion the ratio between the amount of fuel and air supplied is subject to exact proportionality, the object of the invention was to reduce the droplet diameter while taking this proportionality into account.
- v: Geschwindigkeit;
- Q: Menge an Luft in der Zeiteinheit;
- A: Querschhittsfläche.
- v: speed;
- Q: amount of air in unit time;
- A: Cross-sectional area.
These speed values ensure that the droplet enduro knife drops below a value of 10 μm and thus produces a "blue flame" with stoichiometric combustion. As mentioned earlier, one is stoichiometric combustion is not only given with a blue flame, but also with elams with yellow color components, especially when burning highly viscous or ash-rich fuels.
With the method according to the invention, it is even possible for a compact fuel jet (droplet size theoretically infinite) to be broken up by the atomizing air to such an extent that combustion in the combustion zone still satisfies the conditions mentioned at the outset. The speed according to the above definition is v = 180 - 25o m / sec.
It is further proposed according to the invention to control the speed of the combustion air by changing the area of the inlet cross section of the air into the mixing chamber. On the one hand, the air pressure when the combustion air is supplied can be relatively low, which makes it possible to use simply designed fans. On the other hand, the oil supply control valve can be mechanically coupled to a device that changes the supply area. The air pressure can be surprisingly low, at least well below the critical pressure, e.g. at values of 0.1 bar. It makes sense to make the relative speed the same over the entire circumference of the combustion chamber; this means that the air is fed into the mixing zone in a rotationally symmetrical manner and takes place around the axis of the Brennatoff jet.
To carry out the method, a burner arrangement is proposed which is equipped with an atomizing nozzle or inlet opening, which is followed by a duct enclosed by a jacket as a mixing zone, into which the fuel jet is sprayed; the burners The arrangement also has at least one opening machined into the jacket, through which the combustion air can be fed to the duct from the side of the jet. According to the invention, the opening or the openings for supplying the combustion air serving as the atomizing medium are arranged downstream from the mouth of the spray nozzle and their opening average can be changed. It has been found that this arrangement is relatively easy to use in a control scheme.
Individual bores or slots are preferably provided as openings distributed over the circumference and length of the jacket, wherein three to twenty, preferably twelve, bores or slots are distributed over the circumference of the jacket in a rotationally symmetrical arrangement.
The mixing zone or the channel can be designed such that the cross-section is the same everywhere from the mouth of the fuel nozzle to the transition into the combustion zone. The channel is preferably formed as a cylinder.
Mechanically, the change in the air supply cross-section can be achieved in a simple manner by connecting the casing surrounding the duct to an air supply duct on the side facing away from the mixing zone, and by using control devices on the outside of the casing to change the cross section of the openings in the casing. In particular, a sliding sleeve can be attached to the inside of the jacket, which covers an opening or openings with a changing passage cross section. This sliding sleeve should preferably be operated from the outside.
It is also possible that a lance provided at its tip with the fuel nozzle is arranged axially displaceably in the burner axis and that the front part of the lance projects into the channel as a sliding sleeve. It has been indicated that a single opening can serve as a supply opening for the atomizing air. However, it is also possible, preferably, that individual bores or slots distributed over the circumference and length of the casing are provided as openings.
In deviation from the embodiment already mentioned, it can also be recommended for certain operating conditions that the channel in the axial direction, viewed from the expansion zone, first has a cylindrical chamber with a smaller, then a chamber with a larger diameter, and that in the walls of both Chamber openings open. In the latter embodiment it is possible that the smaller chamber is built directly into the lance.
Further embodiments mentioned in the subclaims are explained in the following description with reference to the drawing.
The possibility of controlling the burner arrangement in such a way that the device for controlling the air supply cross section is coupled to a device (valve) adjusting the supply quantity of the fuel is emphasized.
Finally, it is possible to modify the burner arrangement so that it can also be used to burn heating gas. For this purpose, it is proposed that, bypassing the atomizer nozzle, another channel opens into the machine zone, which is connected to a gas supply and whose cross-section is dimensioned for the absorption of gases to be burned.

Zur Steuerung und Überwachung der Luftzuführung sind ein Manometer (P) 107 Und ein Druckschalter (PS) 108 vorgesehen.FIG. 1 shows a control diagram in which the focus is on a
The fuel is supplied to the
Light fuel oils are preferred as fuel because of their purity. However, it is easily possible to use heavy fuel oil qualities, especially when using oil preheating.
The oil droplets are further broken up in the mixing chamber. The resulting fuel-air mixture then enters a
The function of the control is accordingly as follows: The output or the heat output of the burner arrangement is controlled by the supply of the amount of fuel required in each case (control valve 115). With the control of the
The diagram in FIG. 2 shows the relationships between the most important parameters. The abscissa shows which atomization pressure p corresponds to a specific oil throughput. The required air requirement for combustion air is also plotted. This ratio is based on certain nozzle dimensions. The measured values in the diagram are on a commercially available Spraymaster nozzle, item no. 113, No. 80 (manufacturer Fuelmaster, The Hague, The Netherlands). The droplet size (SMD) is plotted on the ordinate in a curve 1, which is calculated according to the formula from SA U T E R (1). It is readily apparent that the droplet size increases more and more towards lower pressures and correspondingly lower throughputs, until it finally becomes "infinitely" large, which corresponds to a continuous, uninterrupted jet. These conditions first occur on the condition that there is no atomizing air entering from the side. By appropriately controlling the access speed of the combustion air, which is arithmetically (see formula (2)) at values between about 40 m / sec and 200 m / sec, a further comminution of the oil droplet can be achieved due to the impulse of the atomizing air impinging on the oil droplets , based on
In summary, the diagram according to FIG. 2 can therefore be seen conclude that it is necessary to empirically determine what air velocities are achieved when entering the combustion chamber in order to effectively reduce the droplet size. In any case, it is not possible to achieve a blue flame or effective stoichiometric combustion with droplets that are larger than 50 µm on average. The droplets can be reduced in size by atomizing air, which is not supplied under so-called critical pressure conditions, but which is supplied, for example, at a pressure of 0.3 ... 0.1 bar or less.
- a) relatively
large slots 10, which extend over approximately 2/3 of the length of the connecting piece, - b) in contrast, much smaller bores or
slots 11, which open within a chamber 7 'located in front of the nozzle opening.
The
The
A liquid fuel is preferably supplied to the interior of the lance (line 125). The fuel line ends in front of the
When heating gas is burned, the
Figures 4a and b show the front part of the lance within the
Bei üblichen Ventilatoren steigt der Lieferdruck an, wenn die geförderte Luftmenge sich verringert.FIG. 4a accordingly shows the position when the heat is small and FIG. 4b shows the position when the heat is high. The speed of the air, which is greater in the position according to FIG. 4a than according to FIG. 4b, results from several interacting factors. These include: the back pressure in the mixing chamber, based on the oil mist pressed in and the dammed up air, decreases with a lower load. With conventional fans, the delivery pressure increases when the amount of air delivered decreases.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 and 4a / b, the control of the air supply takes place by moving the
The other figures show other embodiments in which the principle of controlling the air supply is modified.
Ihre Stellung entspricht in etwa der bei Figur 4b.Figure 5 shows a cross section through a construction in which a StutZen 6 'of the mixing
In reverse of the principle of the displaceable lance according to FIG. 3, FIG. 8 represents the constructive possibility of providing a displaceable
In the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 9, a displaceable
Hierbei entsteht eine mehrfach gestufte Mischkammer 7, 7', 7''.FIG. 10, on the other hand, shows the possibility of creating an inner bushing with a
Als Ausführungsbeispiele bieten sich fast rechteckige Schlitze 70', spitz zulaufende Schlitze 71', dreieckförmige zulaufende Schlitze 72 und weitere Formen an.11a and 11b, analogously to FIG. 10, there is the possibility of making the
Finally, FIG. 12 shows a further exemplary embodiment, in which particular emphasis is placed on the dual (gas-oil) application of the burner. As already explained, the principle of burner technology can also be applied to so-called dual-fuel burners. It is necessary that the lance is connected to a gas supply. In order to achieve optimum gas combustion, it is proposed to provide 4
The mixing
The dimensions of the burner and the burner arrangement can move in further areas. They are usually adapted to the atomizer nozzles which are known per se and are commercially available.
Experiments have shown that when the embodiment according to FIG. 1 is used, the user is able to burn the atomized oil continuously and without soot at about 70% of the stoichiometric requirement when there is an air deficiency. In addition, it is possible to provide a large control range for the air supply, which is based on the amount of fuel used each hour. Since the air pressure in the air duct is small, only fan blowers with a correspondingly low design are required. Costly pressure blowers do not need to be installed. The air flowing in through the
