Description

DESCRIPTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a window for installation in a roof structure, according to the preamble of claim 1. A window of this kind, known from EP 1042569 B1, is installed in a roof structure in the way that a number, usually four, of mounting brackets are fastened to the frame of the window by the first leg portion and to the roof structure by the second leg portion.
[0002] WO 88/04348 A1 discloses a window according to the preamble of claim 1.
[0003] Windows of this known type are usually delivered at the installation site with associated mounting brackets as well as an associated flashing matching the window. The window and mounting brackets are adapted for mounting with the specific associated type of flashing, which requires mounting the window at a particular installation level in the roof structure. Mounting the window and its mounting brackets with another type of flashing will result in incorrect mounting of the window and/or the flashing. Consequently, flashings are traditionally provided in a variety of types, thus rendering the manufacturing and storage more expensive.
[0004] Therefore, it is the object of the invention to provide a window of the type mentioned in the introduction, which enables correct mounting of the window without being restricted to the use of a specific type of flashing.
[0005] According to the invention, this is obtained by a window according to claim 1.
[0006] Thereby a window is provided which may be mounted correctly using different types of flashing, thereby simplifying the mounting process and furthermore opening the possibility of combining windows and flashings not hitherto combinable.
[0007] In a preferred embodiment, the second leg portion comprises a first leg section connected to the first leg section of the first leg portion, said first leg section including at least one area forming an extension beyond a first area of the first leg section of the second leg portion opposite the first leg section of the first leg portion. This makes it possible to mount a plurality of windows next to each other and to define their respective positions by the mounting brackets themselves.
[0008] In a development of the preferred embodiment, an extension forming area is formed at either side of the first area. This provides for increased versatility of the mounting bracket.
[0009] In a further development of the preferred embodiment, the ratio between the overall length of the second leg portion and the first area lies in the interval 1.5:1 to 4:1, preferably in the interval 2:1 to 3:1. This provides for an optimum balance between the need for compact mounting brackets not requiring a large amount of material and a satisfactory transition of the load and accuracy in the positioning of juxtaposed windows.
[0010] In an embodiment of the window not covered by the present invention, the top member and the bottom member each comprises a substantially horizontally extending groove, the side members each comprises a pair of substantially horizontally extending grooves vertically offset in opposite directions with respect to the groove of the top member and the bottom member, respectively, and each of the two leg sections of the first leg portion comprises a flange which is essentially perpendicular to the leg section and positioned in such a way that the flange of one of the leg sections of the first leg portion may engage with the groove of the top or bottom member of the window, while the flange of the other leg section may engage one of the grooves of a side member.
[0011] Thereby a window that is not covered by the present invention is provided in which the connection between mounting bracket and both frame elements at a corner joint may be achieved in a simple and straight forward manner, while still ensuring the possibility of mounting the window with different types of flashings.
[0012] In a particularly preferred embodiment of the window according to the invention each side member comprises two grooves being mutually displaced by substantially equal opposite distances with respect to the groove of the top member and the bottom member, respectively, the distances preferably being between 10 mm and 30 mm, more preferably between 15 mm and 25 mm, and even more preferably 18 mm or 22 mm.
[0013] In a further preferred embodiment of the window according to the invention, each of the two leg sections of the first leg portion comprises holes for passing through fastening members.
[0014] In a second aspect of the invention the above and other objects are obtained by the use of said mounting bracket for installation of a window according to the invention in a roof structure.
[0015] The invention will be described in more detail below by means of a non-limiting example of an embodiment and with reference to the schematic drawings, in which

Fig. 8 shows an alternative embodiment of the window according to the invention.
[0016] In Fig. 1, a window 1 is shown in a mounted position at a first installation level used when mounting the window 1 with a first pre-defined type of flashing (not shown) in a pitched roof structure comprising rafters 20 extending in the direction of the roof pitch and battens 21 placed perpendicular hereto. For the sake of clearness, only the exterior frame of the window 1 is shown with two side members 4, 5 extending parallel to the rafters 20 and a top member 2 and a bottom member 3 extending parallel to the battens 21. An auxiliary batten 23 is placed above the last continuous batten 21 below the bottom member 3, just as an auxiliary batten 22 has been placed above the top member 2. In the installation situation shown, at least the lower auxiliary batten 23 is placed at an appropriate distance from the nearest continuous roof batten 21 in order to give way to positioning of the roofing material in such a way that the flashing can subsequently be placed in a satisfactory way, preferably without having to adapt it by an irregular deformation in order to obtain a secure waterproof flashing. However, the auxiliary battens 22, 23 may also be placed abutting the respective adjacent continuous battens 21.
[0017] The top and bottom frame members 2, 3 is each provided with one groove 7, while each side frame member 4, 5 is provided with two grooves 8a, 8b. The grooves 8a, 8b are displaced vertically and equidistant in opposite directions with respect to the groove 7 of the top and bottom frame members 2, 3. The grooves 7, 8a, 8b define different installation levels at which the window 1 may be mounted in the roof structure. Preferably the grooves 8a, 8b are each displaced with respect to the grove 7 by a distance being between 10 mm and 30 mm, more preferably between 15 mm and 25 mm, and even more preferably 18 mm or 22 mm.
[0018] The frame members 2-5 are connected with each other in corner joints 6, at which mounting brackets 10 are fastened in order to anchor the window 1 in the roof structure. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the window 1 is mounted by bringing a flange 30 of a leg section 11a of the first leg portion 11 of the mounting brackets 10 into engagement with the groove 7 of a bottom or top member 2, 3, and placing the window in the roof structure such that a second leg portion 12 of the mounting bracket rests on the respective adjacent auxiliary batten 22 or 23, whereupon screws (not shown) are led through holes 28 in the second leg portion 12 of the mounting brackets 10, down in the auxiliary battens 22, 23 and further down in the subjacent rafters 20.
[0019] In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 two pairs of mounting brackets 10a, 10b are needed to mount the window 1, the mounting brackets 10a, 10b of each pair being identical, and the mounting brackets of the one pair 10a being essentially mirror inverted versions of the mounting brackets of the other pair 10b.
[0020] In other embodiments the mounting brackets may be identical in pairs otherwise than by being mirror inverted, or the mounting brackets may simply be four identical mounting brackets.
[0021] Fig. 2 shows a window 1 in a mounted position at a second installation level used when mounting the window 1 with a second preferred type of flashing (not shown) in a pitched roof structure similar to that shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that no auxiliary batten is provided.
[0022] Again, the top and bottom frame members 2, 3 is each provided with one groove 7, while each side frame member 4, 5 is provided with two grooves 8a, 8b, albeit only the groove 8a is shown. The frame members 2-5 are connected with each other in corner joints 6, at which mounting brackets 10 are fastened in order to anchor the window 1 in the roof structure.
[0023] In the embodiment of Fig. 2, however, the window 1 is mounted by bringing a flange 30 of a first leg section 11a of the first leg portion 11 of the mounting brackets 10 into engagement with the upper groove 8a of a side member 4, 5, and placing the window in the roof structure such that a second leg section 12 of the mounting bracket rests on an auxiliary rafter 24 placed on top of the adjacent rafter 20, whereupon screws (not shown) are led through holes 28 in the second leg portion 12 of the mounting brackets 10 down in the auxiliary rafter 24 and further down in the rafters 20.
[0024] For mounting the window 1 at the installation level according to Fig. 2 the same two pairs of mounting brackets 10a, 10b that were used for mounting the window 1 at the installation level according to Fig. 1 may be used.
[0025] In alternative installation situations, the lower groove 8b may be used, and/or the auxiliary rafter 24 may be omitted. Furthermore, in alternative embodiments of the window 1, there may be more than one groove 7 provided in each of the top and bottom members 2, 3, and likewise there may be only one or more than two grooves 8a, 8b provided in each of the side members 4, 5. In an embodiment not covered by the present invention, either the top and bottom members 2, 3 or the side members 4, 5 may in principle have no grooves at all, in which case the side members 4, 5 or the top and bottom members 2, 3, respectively are provided with at least two grooves, such that in any case at least two installation levels are defined.
[0026] Figs. 3A and 3B show a first embodiment of a mounting bracket 10 according to the invention, and of the type used in the installation situations shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
[0027] The mounting bracket 10 shown in Figs. 3Aand 3B comprises a second leg portion 12, which is adapted for connection with the underlying part of the roof structure in the mounted position by being provided with at least one hole 28 for passing through a fastening means such as e.g. a screw (not shown).
[0028] The mounting bracket 10 comprises a first leg portion 11 including two leg sections 11a, 11b of which one, here the leg section 11a, is adapted to be fastened to a frame member 2, 3, 4, 5 at a corner joint 6 by being provided with a hole 27 for passing through a fastening means such as a screw (not shown), whereas the other, here the leg section 11b, is merely adapted for abutment at a corner joint 6 with a frame member 2, 3, 4, 5 adjacent to the one to which the leg section 11a is fastened. The leg section 11a comprises a flange 30 extending essentially perpendicular to the leg section 11a and intended for engagement with a groove 7; 8a, 8b in a frame member 2, 3; 4, 5 at a corner joint 6 of the window 1.
[0029] The leg section 11b of the first leg portion 11 is in this embodiment provided as an element 11b extending essentially perpendicular to the leg section 11a at the end of a protruding section 14 of the leg section 11a, such that the second leg section 11b is intended for abutment at a corner joint 6 with a frame member 2, 3; 4, 5 of the window 1 adjacent to that to which the leg section 11a is abutting, thereby ensuring correct positioning of the mounting bracket 10 with respect to the corner joint 6.
[0030] The mounting bracket 10 further comprises a second leg portion 12 extending perpendicular to the leg sections 11a, 11b. The second leg portion 12 is intended, in a mounted position, for abutment against either the top side of a batten 21, preferably as indicated in Fig. 1 against the lower or upper auxiliary batten 22 or 23, or the top side of a rafter 20, preferably as indicated in Fig. 2 the top side of an auxiliary rafter 24, depending on the desired installation level. The second leg portion 12 is furthermore adapted for connection with the underlying part of the roof structure in the mounted position. In the embodiment shown this is achieved by providing the second leg portion 12 with at least one hole 28 for passing through a fastening means such as e.g. a screw (not shown).
[0031] As shown in figure 5, the second leg portion (12) comprises a first leg section connected to the first leg section of the first leg portion, and first leg section includes an area forming an extension beyond a first area of the first leg section of the second leg portion opposite the first leg section of the first leg portion. The ratio between the overall length of the second leg portion and the first area lies in the interval 1.5:1 to 4:1, preferably in the interval 2:1 to 3:1. Here, the ratio is approximately 1.6:1.
[0032] The mounting bracket 10 further comprises a third leg portion 13 extending substantially perpendicular to the second leg portion 12 and comprising two leg sections 13a and 13b extending in extension of each other and essentially perpendicular to each other, such that the leg section 13a is provided displaced in parallel with the first leg section 11a of the first leg portion 11, while the leg section 13b is extending essentially perpendicular to both the first and the second leg portions 11 and 12.
[0033] The third leg portion 13 is intended for abutment, in the mounted position of the window, against a vertical surface of an element of the roof structure, such as an auxiliary batten 22, 23 (cf. Fig. 1), an auxiliary rafter 24 (cf. Fig. 2) or a rafter 20, thereby providing a gap between the roof structure and the frame of the window 1, which gap may be used for insulation purposes.
[0034] It is noted that the leg section 13b, which provides the mounting bracket 10 with added strength, and/or the protruding section 14 of the leg section 11a may in principle be omitted.
[0035] Fig. 5 shows a second embodiment of a mounting bracket 10 according to the invention and of the type used in the installation situations shown in Figs 1 and 2; and Figs 4a and 4b.
[0036] The mounting bracket 10 shown in Fig. 5 comprises a second leg portion 12, which is adapted for connection with the underlying part of the roof structure in the mounted position by being provided with at least one hole 28, 28' for passing through a fastening means such as e.g. a screw (not shown).
[0037] The second leg portion 12 comprises two halves, in the following denoted sections 12a, 12a', which are in the embodiment shown mirror-inverted versions of each other when inverted about an axis 36, albeit with the exception of one feature, namely a further projection 35 provided on the section 12a and a further recess 34 provided on the section 12a'. The further projection 35 and further recess 34 are intended for engagement with a corresponding recess and projection, respectively, on a mounting bracket of an adjacent window.
[0038] The mounting bracket 10 comprises a first leg portion 11 including a leg section 11a which is adapted to be fastened to a frame member 2, 3, 4, 5 at a corner joint 6 by being provided with a hole 27 for passing through a fastening means such as a screw (not shown), The leg section 11a comprises a flange 30 extending essentially perpendicular to the leg section 11a and intended for engagement with a groove 7; 8a, 8b in a frame member 2, 3, 4, 5 adjacent a corner joint 6 of the window 1.
[0039] As mentioned above, the mounting bracket 10 further comprises a second leg portion 12 extending perpendicular to the leg section 11a. Each section 12a, 12a' of the second leg portion 12 is intended, in a mounted position, for abutment against either the top side of a batten 21, preferably as indicated in Fig. 1 against the lower or upper auxiliary batten 22 or 23, or the top side of a rafter 20, preferably as indicated in Fig. 2 the top side of an auxiliary rafter 24, depending on the desired installation level. Each section 12a, 12a' of the second leg portion 12 is furthermore adapted for connection with the underlying part of the roof structure in the mounted position. In the embodiment shown this is achieved by providing each section 12a, 12a' of the second leg portion 12 with at least one hole 28, 28' for passing through a fastening means such as e.g. a screw (not shown).
[0040] As shown, the mounting bracket of the embodiment of Fig. 5 also has a second leg portion comprising a first leg section connected to the first leg section of the first leg portion, and of which the first leg section includes at least one area forming an extension beyond a first area of the first leg section of the second leg portion opposite the first leg section of the first leg portion. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, an extension forming area is formed at either side of the first area. The ratio between the overall length of the second leg portion and the first area lies in the interval 1.5:1 to 4:1, preferably in the interval 2:1 to 3:1. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, this ratio is approximately shown. The mounting bracket 10 further comprises respective third leg portions 13 and 13' extending substantially perpendicular to each section 12a, 12a' of the second leg portion 12 and comprising two leg sections 13a and 13b, respectively 13a' and 13b', extending in extension of each other and essentially perpendicular to each other, such that the leg section 13a, respectively 13a', is provided displaced in parallel with the leg section 11a of the first leg portion 11, while the leg section 13b, respectively 13b', is extending essentially perpendicular to both the first and the second leg portions 11 and 12.
[0041] The respective third leg portions 13, 13' are intended for abutment, in the mounted position of the window, against a vertical surface of an element of the roof structure, such as an auxiliary batten 22, 23 (cf. Fig. 1), an auxiliary rafter 24 (cf. Fig. 2) or a rafter 20, thereby providing a gap between the roof structure and the frame of the window 1, which gap may be used for insulation purposes.
[0042] Further, in a manner known per se, each section 12a, 12a' of the second leg portion 12 may comprise, at its respective outer edge, an engagement member, e.g. in the form of a projection 32, respectively 32', and a recess 33, respectively 33', intended for engagement with a corresponding engagement member on a mounting bracket of an adjacent window as in the embodiment shown. Likewise, the second leg portion 12 may in a manner known per se comprise a folded flap 29. In a mounted position, this flap 29 abuts the roof structure and causes a minimum distance to be maintained between the roof structure and the top or bottom member of the frame so that insulating material may be inserted in this space.
[0043] Also, and as shown in Fig. 5, the first leg portion 11 may comprise a folded flap 37 similar to the folded flap 29 described previously. In a mounted position, this flap 37 abuts a frame member 2, 3, 4, 5 and causes a minimum distance to be maintained between the mounting bracket 10 and the frame member 2, 3, 4, 5 so that insulating material may be inserted in this space.
[0044] The mounting bracket 10 according to the second embodiment of the invention and as shown in Fig. 5 has, particularly due to being provided with the two sections 12a, 12a' of the second leg portion 12, the advantage that it may be mounted on any frame member 2, 3, 4, 5 adjacent to any of the corner joints 6 of the window 1, and thereby that the window 1 may be provided with four identical mounting brackets 10. According to the desired installation level, all four mounting brackets are mounted either on the top and bottom frame members 2 and 3 or on the respective side frame members 4, 5.
[0045] Consequently the frame members 2, 3, 4, 5 need in principle only be provided with one groove each such that the groove 7 of the top and bottom frame members 2 and 3 defines a first installation level, and the groove 8a or 8b of the side frame members 4 and 5 define a second installation level that is lowered with respect to the first installation level.
[0046] In the following installation examples corresponding to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2 using mounting brackets according to Fig. 5 will be described.
[0047] In an installation corresponding to that of Fig. 1 the window 1 is mounted by bringing the flange 30 of the leg portion 11 of the mounting brackets 10 into engagement with the groove 7 of the adjacent top member 2 or bottom member 3, and placing the window in the roof structure such that the second leg portion 12 and its sections 12a, 12a' of the mounting bracket 10 rests on the respective adjacent auxiliary batten 22 or 23, whereupon screws (not shown) are led through holes 28, 28' in the leg sections 12a, 12a' of the mounting brackets 10, down in the auxiliary battens 22, 23 and further down in the subjacent rafters 20.
[0048] In an installation corresponding to that of Fig. 2, however, the window 1 is mounted by bringing the flange 30 of the leg portion 11 of the mounting brackets 10 into engagement with the groove 8a or 8b of a side member 4, 5, and placing the window in the roof structure such that the second leg portion 12 and its sections 12a, 12a' of the mounting bracket rests on the adjacent auxiliary rafter 24, whereupon screws (not shown) are led through holes 28, 28' in the leg sections 12a, 12a' of the mounting brackets 10, down in the auxiliary rafter 24 and further down in the rafters 20.
[0049] It is noted that the respective leg sections 13b and 13b', which provide the mounting bracket 10 with added strength may in principle be omitted.
[0050] Likewise it is noted that a protruding section 14 and a leg section 11b as described in connection with the first embodiment of the mounting bracket 10 according to the invention may in principle be added.
[0051] In an alternative embodiment of the window frame to cooperate with the second embodiment of the mounting bracket, cf. Fig. 8, markings 150 are provided for indicating two installation levels of the window 1 in relation to a surrounding building structure. The markings 150 comprise two lines 15a, 15b, which are of different colour, for instance blue and red, to be easily distinguished from each other. Markings in identical colour, other styles of markings such as broken lines, dot-and-dash-lines and combinations thereof are conceivable. Also more than two markings are envisaged corresponding to more than two installation levels. The markings 150 extend across the entire face. However, embodiments comprising markings only extending across part or parts of the face are conceived. Although depicted in Fig. 8 as provided only on the outer face of side frame member, the markings may in addition thereto or alternatively be provided on the outer face of the bottom frame member. The respective markings 15a, 15b are associated with respective grooves for use with mounting brackets 10 for installation of the frame in a desired level in a surrounding building structure.
[0052] Referring to Fig. 6, the mounting brackets 10 according to the first and second embodiment of the invention and as shown in Fig. 5 has due to the second leg portion 12, a further advantage when mounting a plurality of windows 1 adjacent to one another. Namely, a predetermined distance between adjacent windows 1 may be maintained without the need of further precautions by mounting the adjacent windows 1 such that the engagement means 32, 33 and further engagement means 34, 35 of the mounting brackets 10 of the adjacent windows 1 are in engagement with each other.
[0053] In this connection it is particularly preferred to mount the windows 1 such that the mounting brackets are attached to the frame members at a distance of about 25 mm from a corner joint 6, and that the section(s) 12a and/or 12a' of the second leg portion 12 are dimensioned such as to provide a distance of about 100 mm between adjacent window frame structures.
[0054] As a third embodiment, one of a plurality of mounting brackets 600 is shown in figures 7a to 7c. Each mounting bracket 600 comprises a first leg 601 adapted to be mounted in parallel with the outer side of a corresponding frame member, and a second leg 602 which in the mounted position protrudes at an angle from the first leg. In the embodiment shown, the first and second legs 601, 602 are formed as integral parts of a substantially angular fitting part. The first leg 601 is connected to an additional member 603 and the first leg and the additional member are movable with respect to each other in an undetachable manner between a first and a second position. In this context, the term undetachable denotes a connection which is intended to be maintained throughout during installation and normal usage of the mounting bracket.
[0055] In the embodiment shown, the additional member is a base member 603 adapted to be mounted on the outer side of a corresponding frame member. The first leg 601 is connected to the base member 603 by means of a pivotal connection 640 allowing rotation of the first leg and the base member relative to each other about an axis A parallel to the width direction of the corresponding frame member, between said first and second positions.
[0056] In order to lock the first leg to the additional member in the desired position and to secure the mounting bracket to the corresponding frame member, the first leg 601 is in the embodiment shown provided with a plurality of openings 611 and the base member 603 with a plurality of openings 631, at least some of said openings 611, 631 being positioned opposite each other in the first and second positions.
[0057] The mounting bracket is adapted to be fastened to the underlying roof structure, for instance by fastening screw which are driven into rafters of the roof structure. To this end, the second leg 602 of the mounting bracket is provided with a plurality of openings 621 - 624. Among the openings in the second leg is an oblong opening 623 extending in the longitudinal direction of the frame member, and another oblong opening 624 extending in the width direction of the frame member. In this manner, slight adjustment of the entire roof window may easily take place.
[0058] In the embodiment shown, the base member 603 is provided with a protruding ledge 612 adapted to engage a recess formed in the corresponding frame member.
[0059] Fig. 7a shows the mounting bracket 600 in a first position, in which the second leg 602 is positioned near the lower edge of the base member 603. Mounting the roof window with the first and second legs in this position entails that the window will be located relatively high up in the roof structure. In case a lower installation depth is for some reason desired, the first leg 601 (and the remaining portion, i.e. the second leg 602) is rotated about axis A through the position shown in Fig. 7b and finally into the second position shown in Fig. 7c.
[0060] Finally, it should be noted that the above description of preferred embodiments serves only as an example, and that a worker skilled in the art will know that numerous variations are possible without deviating from the scope of the claims.
