Abstract

A coating is placed on a micro-porous carrier in the presence of a volatile liquid which is able to migrate the coating into the carrier and to desolvatise the coating. The liquid is subsequently volatilised and the resulting dry ultra-filtration membrane is essentially crack-free and has desirable mechanical and chemical stability. The carrier may be pre-treated with a volatile liquid such as acetone before the coating is placed on the carrier. The carrier material may alternatively be dispersed in a volatile liquid such as methanol for the formation of a coating suspension which is placed on the carrier. The coating material, preferably zirconium oxide will have a particle size in the interval from approximately 5 mμm to approximately 10 μm, and the coating will have a thickness of up to approximately 20 μm. The carrier, such as a porous carbon tube will have a pore volume of approximately 5-60 per cent and a pore size of approximately 5 mμm - 40 μm. The stability is increased by burning the membrane at 25 degrees centigrade to 1,500 degrees centigrade, preferably at approximately 400-600 degrees centigrade.
