Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a porous membrane having a controlled pore diameter and being suitable for blood cell separation, by irradiating a membrane comprising a photopolymer with light to cause a selective chemical change of the surface of the membrane, and then removing pore-forming areas from the membrane.
CONSTITUTION: A flat mask 5 is placed between a light source 1 and a membrane 6 comprising a photopolymer which upon light-irradiation can decompose or crosslink and changes in its chemical properties, such as polyisopropenyl ketone or polyglycidyl methacrylate. The mask 5 has a number of substantially equally spaced microcircles having a size corresponding to that of pores to be bored through the membrane 6 so that the light transmittances differ between the inside of the microcircles and the other area. Next, the porous membrane of the purpose is produced by passing light in the visible or far-ultraviolet region to the membrane 6 from the source 1 to cause a selective chemical change of the membrane, and removing the pore-forming areas.
