DEUTSCHES PATENTAMTGERMAN PATENT OFFICE
The invention relates to a method for producing packaging materials for metals. The packaging of metal parts and objects prior to their storage or dispatch, has the task of attacking the metallic surface by the constituents of the atmosphere to prevent. In the case of iron, for example, the oxygen present in the air already leads relatively in a short time and in the presence of only small amounts of moisture to rust, which not only damages the quality of the metallic surface, but is also used in many cases of the object for the imaginary destination. Such disturbances do not only occur on objects made of iron, but also the objects made of non-ferrous metals suffer through the atmosphere is often corrosive, e.g. B. Dezincification of brass.
Die Ölpapiere haben den Nachteil, daß ihre Wirkung schon nach verhältnismäßig geringer Zeit bedeutendIn order to prevent this damage, metal objects have often been used since ancient times greased or oiled for shipping. Instead of those applied directly to the surface Coatings are used today on a large scale, so-called oil papers because it is well known Without any kind of impregnation, paper or foils cannot adequately protect them. The oil papers have the disadvantage that their effect is significant after a relatively short time

.decreases and therefore the oil papers prove to be unreliable during longer transports or storage. In addition, as a result of their impregnation with flammable organic substances easily flammable. .
,. :ίο Were impregnated by brushing or spraying. All organic compounds that can be considered for this, however, are difficult because of their difficulties Production so expensive that the use of such papers is not only due to their high flammability. but also cannot be done on an industrial scale for economic reasons. ,. :
Schließlich sind' auch' VerpackungsmaterialienAfter all, 'also' are packaging materials
. ' ■ ■became known which to protect against the action of the atmosphere normally impregnated gases and vapors contained as impurities with nitrites and possibly carbonates are. . '■ ■
It has been shown, however, that the sodium nitrite used here is only relatively short Time has a rust-protecting effect, as it decomposes after a few weeks by converting it into nitrate. The addition of carbonates as a stabilizer to the nitrites can also help this conversion don't hold back. In order to delay this conversion of the nitrite in such papers so that Even after years the paper retains its rust-preventing effect, is inventively a manufacturing process proposed that consists in that in addition to the nitrites and optionally Carbonates and sulfates, in particular added to alkalis and alkaline earths will. The addition of sodium sulfate to a mixture of nitrites and carbonates did that brought surprising effect that the corrosion
■40- sion protection by a multiple of what has been achieved so far could be improved. ■
For the production of anti-rust packaging materials for iron and its alloys, the fibrous materials or foils are according to the invention dung impregnated with solutions which, in addition to nitrites, also contain carbonates and sulphates of alkalis and alkaline earths contain. The solutions, their total salt content depending on the type of fiber or the Foil lies between 5% and saturation.
Als besonders vorteilhaft hat sich noch der Zusatz von Phosphaten erwiesen.generally hold the nitrites and carbonates in amounts of the same order of magnitude, while the sulphate content can be lower. As special The addition of phosphates has also proven advantageous.
The previously known impregnation processes for the production of packaging materials, could always only use the fiber material that had already been produced or run out of foils already produced. Impregnation could only take place after the carrier had been produced by dipping, brushing or spraying.
The method according to the invention now offers the fundamental advantage that the impregnation can already be included in the manufacturing process of the fibrous materials or foils, because the salts used do not interfere with the manufacturing processes. In the case of fibrous materials such as paper, the impregnation can already take place in the Hollander, during the gluing or another phase of the production process of the paper sheet. In the manufacturing position of films themselves act rust protection in a very humid atmosphere, the salt solutions are advantageously added at a time at which the drying out and solidifying ^ process of film has not yet been initiated. Of course, one also finished fiber · ■ can materials or films by the inventive process impregnate when it is desirable for operational reasons *. The method according to the invention can also be used advantageously for the production of packaging material which is intended to protect against acid vapors in the atmosphere. In this case, the impregnation takes place with salt solutions which increase the carbonate content of the solutions according to the invention compared to the other components.
On the basis of various tests it was found that the best corrosion protection was achieved when the fibrous materials (e.g. paper) or foils are impregnated with a solution that has the following composition: 100 parts of water, 40 to 60 parts of nitrite (sodium nitrite), 5 to 10 parts of sulfate (Glauber's salt) and 5 to 10 parts of carbonate (soda).
