Description
It has been found that the reaction products of resin acids and ethylene oxide in a ratio of 1 mol of resin acid to 8 or more, suitably 10 to 60 mol of ethylene oxide, are emulsion breakers that are extremely effective. They are particularly suitable for splitting emulsions of water in oil, for example petroleum emulsions such as are used on a large scale in the mineral oil industry. They can also be used to advantage for separating water from so-called waste oil emulsions, e.g. when regenerating car, engine or machine oils, especially since they also cause the soot, graphite, metal and other dirt particles to separate more quickly. Likewise, emulsions, such as those easily formed in industrial processes by washing oily products with water or alkali solutions, can be quickly clarified by adding the reaction products described from resin acids. Also in the form of their esters with organic or inorganic monobasic or polybasic acids, in particular their sulfuric acid esters respectively. their salts, the reaction products mentioned are very advantageous emulsion breakers.
Suitable reaction products from resin acids and ethylene oxide are e.g. from rosin, abietic acid, hydrogenated abietic acid, pimaric acid, the condensation product of rosin and maleic acid or the substitution products, anhydrides, salts, esters, amides or halides of such natural or synthetic resin acids available. In general, the reaction products of 1 mole of resin acid with about 25 to 50 moles, advantageously 35 to 45 moles, of ethylene oxide have proven particularly effective in breaking down mineral oil emulsions.
The optimum effectiveness varies within certain limits depending on the type of emulsion to be split and the resin acid used in each case for the preparation of the reaction products.
It has already been proposed to use alkali salts of abietic acid (rosin soaps) as breakers for petroleum emulsions. Compared to these, the reaction products of resin acids and ethylene oxide described have a far superior effectiveness.
Beispiel 1:Example 1:
A crude oil emulsion from a north German oil field with a water content of 10.6% is mixed with 500 g of a reaction product of 1 mol of rosin and 35 mol of ethylene oxide per 1000 kg. After standing at 80 ° for 24 hours, the water content of the petroleum has decreased to 0.13%.
Beispiel 2:Example 2:
A crude oil emulsion of Austrian origin with a water content of 49% is mixed with 200 g of the sulfonated reaction product of 1 mole of rosin with 15 moles of ethylene oxide per 1000 kg. After standing for 24 hours, the water is completely separated from the oil layer.
Beispiel 3:Example 3:
A crude oil emulsion of Austrian origin with a water content of 52.3% is mixed with only 50 g of the emulsion breaker specified in Example 2 per 1000 kg. After standing at 40 ° for 24 hours, the water content of the petroleum has decreased to 0.13%.
