Description
Process for the preservation of diesters of sulfurous acid, in particular for their use as pesticides. The invention relates to the prevention of the decomposition of chloroalkylaryloxyalkyl sulfites, which are the subject of main patent 932 61o.
Diester of sulphurous acid, in which - one of the ester groups is a chloroalkyl radical which: contains 2 to 4 carbon atoms and 1 to 3 chlorine atoms and which has no chlorine atom on the a carbon atom, and_ the other ester group is a radical with the formula R-0- X-, which is a monovalent aryl hydrocarbon radical which can be substituted with at least one alkyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl, halogen and nitro group, and X is an alkylene radical which has 2 to 4 carbon atoms, are known and especially as insecticides suitable for combating mites.
These chloroalkylaryloxyalkyl sulfites sometimes tend to decompose, especially under poor storage conditions; they give off sulfur dioxide and become darker in color.
The invention relates to such a decomposition of these chloroalkylaryloxyalkyl sulfites to prevent. In practicing this invention, the chloroalkylaryloxyalkyl sulfite is used with an alkylene oxide, e.g. B. propylene oxide or ethylene oxide, mixed. A small Amount of such alkylene oxide z. B. up to 5 "lo the weight of the sulfite is sufficient, the decomposition of the chloroalkylaryloxyalkyl sulfite within a prolonged period of time to prevent.
Various amounts of propylene oxide were used to illustrate the invention with different proportions of: 2- (p-tert-butylphenoxy) -isopropyl-2-chloroethyl sulfite mixed and subjected to an accelerated aging and storage test by put them in sealed clear glass bottles in direct sunlight on a roof camped.
In a control experiment without adding propylene oxide, the decomposition of 2- (p-tert-butylphenoxy) - isopropyl -: 2 - chloroethyl sulfite was made evident by the release of sulfur dioxide through the smell and the darkening of the compound in a few days. With oj 0 / @ propylene oxide (based on the sulphite), the sulfur dioxide odor and the darkening of the substance only developed after about 6 weeks. With 0.25 "/ 0 propylene oxide (based on the sulfite), the decomposition was not noticeable after 5 months. With 0.5 and 1/10 propylene oxide (based on the sulfite) the decomposition was not noticeable up to about 8 months With 50/0 propylene oxide (based on the sulfite), decomposition was observed in the foreseeable future. If so desired, larger amounts of alkylene oxide than are necessary to prevent the decomposition can of course be mixed with the chloroalkylaryloxyalkyl sulfite; the excess -analkylene oxide then acts as a diluent. For example, mixtures of 2- (-tert.-lp butylphenoxy) -isopropyl-2-chloroethylsulfite and up to 5114 and more of the weight of the mixture of propylene oxide have been used as insecticides, which did not decompose during storage. which is present in excess of the small amount necessary to avoid decomposition of the ester, serves as a solvent or carrier: the propylene oxide and the sulphite are mutually exclusive mutually dissolving liquids. The propylene oxide evaporates when the chloroalkylaryloxyalkyl sulfite is sprayed and there is no residue or a reduction in the effectiveness of the sulfite. Ethylene oxide, which is gaseous at room temperature, can be introduced into the ester and absorbed therein in gaseous form, or the ethylene oxide can be mixed with the ester in liquid form under pressure. Other chloroalkylaryloxyalkyl sulfates within the general formula given above, which can also be stabilized with alkylene oxide, are given in the main patent on which. Is referred to.
