Description
The innovation relates to a device for conditioning dried hops according to the preamble of claim 1.
When freshly harvested (green hops), hops consist of around 80% water and around 20% dry matter. In order to dry green hops to the level required for delivery to the receiving points and for the necessary bagging, a large proportion of the moisture must be removed from the hops; the hops are dried to an average moisture content of 10%.
However, the dried hops coming out of the kiln are not uniformly and evenly dried; this is due to differences in the loading, irregular compaction in the hops themselves, different types of hops, etc. The degree of drying can be between 7 and 20% moisture, so that the hops are overdried and become brittle in certain places, while in other places, e.g. in so-called "nests", they have a much higher moisture content. It is therefore necessary and common practice to subject the dried hops to a moisture treatment after drying in the kiln in order to make the hops soft and supple for bagging and shipping so that they do not break or crumble.
This moist treatment used to be carried out by spreading the dried hops out on drying floors and exposing them to the natural humidity of the outside air over a longer period of time, so that natural humidification took place on a long-term basis. However, this method is very time-consuming and dependent on the weather conditions; in hot, dry weather, the humidity is not sufficient even during the night to achieve the desired moisture in the dried hops.
b -b-
Sprayers have therefore already been used to introduce the moisture required for the desired humidification into the hops in the form of a spray. In many cases, water was even sprayed onto the dried hops using a hose, which of course leads to exceptionally high moisture differences within a batch. However, these sprayers ensure that the spray is supplied evenly over the entire hop surface or at least over part of it, so that areas with a relatively high moisture content absorb just as much spray as areas with a low moisture content, which means that the moisture differences in the hops are even increased. This method has therefore not been adopted in practice.
There are also hop conditioning devices that automatically regulate the moisture content of the dried hops. In a chamber containing the dried hops, the uneven moisture content is balanced out by humidified air that is blown through the hops, regardless of the state of drying of the hops and the relative humidity of the outside air. This allows a uniform dry quality of the hops to be achieved automatically and in a short time with a maximum permissible moisture content of 12%. However, such devices have the disadvantage that they are expensive to purchase and have an extremely high energy consumption, so that these devices have only been used in practice in isolated cases.
The object of the invention is to achieve a perfect and automatic conditioning of the dried hops to the maximum permissible moisture content of 12% with the least possible effort and the lowest possible operating costs and independent of the humidity of the outside air.
This object is achieved with the features of the characterizing part of claim 1. Further embodiments of the invention are the subject of the subclaims.
The air that is traditionally sent through the hop racks arranged one above the other in the hop drying system is discharged unused into the open air via the hop racks through an outlet opening in the drying system as highly saturated moist air. The moisture contained in it is the moisture that was extracted from the hops in the hop kiln. According to the proposal for the innovation, this air is now (instead of being discharged into the open air) fed into the conditioning chamber via a connecting duct and there passed through the hops to be conditioned with the help of a fan. The hops in the conditioning chamber are the hops that have reached the required - usually too high and discontinuous - degree of drying and are therefore brought to a uniform and maximum permissible moisture content of 12% in the conditioning chamber, so that the hops conditioned in this way can be bagged with the optimum moisture level for the producer and ready for shipping.
If the hops brought from the kiln to the conditioning chamber are not in the same state of drying, the conditioning is carried out by alternating between volume flow control and recirculation control. If the upper kiln layer in the conditioning chamber is filled, the system runs at full power for a certain time, e.g. one hour, using a timer. The shut-off valve for the kiln exhaust air is opened and the shut-off valve for the recirculation air is closed. The system then switches to volume flow control, whereby the shut-off valve for the kiln exhaust air is closed and the shut-off valve for the recirculation air is opened. If no volume flow control is used, alternative intervals can be controlled individually.
The innovation is shown below in conjunction with the drawing using an example of implementation. In the drying section 2, an opening 7 is formed above the hoists 4 which is connected to a kiln exhaust air duct 8 which is connected to the conditioning system 6. The kiln exhaust air duct 8 has a fire protection flap 9 at the opening 7 and a shut-off flap 10 at the entrance to the conditioning system 6, which opens into the housing section 11 or the conditioning device 11 of the conditioning system 6. The conditioning device 11 works in such a way that it takes in moist air via the kiln exhaust air duct 8 and introduces it into the conditioning chamber 12 and/or 13 in the lower area and leads it upwards through the hops 14 to be conditioned arranged therein and releases it into the open air through the cover 15. The recirculation mode is carried out in such a way that the shut-off flap 10 is closed so that no more moist air is fed from the system 1 via the kiln exhaust air duct 8, and the exhaust air flap 16 is opened; this creates a closed circuit within the conditioning system 6 in which the air is circulated and the hops 14 in the conditioning chamber 12, 13 are brought to a uniform moisture content.
