As stated in patent specification No. 79693, a mixture of phthalic acid and phthalonic acid is obtained when naphthalene is oxidized by means of permanganates. It has now been found that in the preparation of this mixture of acids one can replace the permanganate with manganate with great advantage, as soon as one works in a sufficiently dilute solution. If an insufficient amount of water is used, the oxidation is very slow and difficult, and the amount of acid obtained is a small one. The process is completely different when the ingredients are made to interact in the presence of an abundant amount of water. The reaction is then completed in a few hours and gives the phthalic acid-phthalonic acid mixture in almost theoretical yield, and the more phthalonic acid the more water is used. To represent ι ο kg of the acid mixture in which the phthalonic acid predominates, for example 10 kg of naphthalene with 1000 1 of water and an amount of potassium manganate, which contains 90 kg of K2 Mn O4, heated on the reflux condenser or under pressure until discoloration. The excess naphthalene (about 2.5 kg) is then distilled over with steam, the remaining solution is removed from the manganese dioxide and processed further by known methods. Apart from the fact that the use of manganate for the oxidation of naphthalene is completely new in and of itself, it offers the following very important advantages: 1. wird das Product billiger, -weil die Umwandlungskosten des Manganats in Permanganat vermieden werden;1. The product becomes cheaper because of the conversion costs of manganate in permanganate to be avoided; 2. wird der Oxydationsprocefs bei Anwendung von Manganat in ca. fünf Siebenteln der Zeit zu Ende gebracht, welche man beim Gebrauch von Permanganat nöthig hat;2. If manganate is used, the oxidation process is about five sevenths of that Completed the time required to use permanganate; 3. ist die Ausbeute an Säuregemisch, auf dieselbe Menge activen Sauerstoffs berechnet, über ein Drittel gröfser als beim Gebrauch von Permanganat.3. is the yield of acid mixture calculated on the same amount of active oxygen, over a third larger than when using permanganate.
