Description
- Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft eine Folie mit hoher Barriere. Insbesondere betrifft die Erfindung einen Mehrschichtfolienverbund, der gegebenenfalls eine metallisierte Oberfläche aufweist.
- Die Verbindung von Metallen, wie z.B. Aluminium, Silber, Chrom usw., mit Kunststoff-Folien und die entstehende Gasbarriere machte in vielen Fällen den Ersatz von Metallfolien durch derartige Folien möglich. Zur Bildung der aufgrund der Flexibilität der Folien erforderlichen starken Metall-Kunststoff-Verbindung wurde bereits eine Reihe von Ansätzen entwickelt. Manchmal muß man die Basisschicht mit einer speziellen Grundierungsschicht versehen, um eine effektive Bindung zwischen dem Metall und dem Substrat zu erreichen. Eine thermoplastische Oberfläche muß man häufig koronabehandeln, damit sich eine effektive Bindung zwischen dem Metall und der thermoplastischen Oberfläche ergibt. Die Gasbarriereeigenschaften hängen auch vom Zustand der Oberfläche, auf der das Metall abgeschieden wird, ab.
- Eine Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung besteht in der Bereitstellung einer metallisierten Folie mit einer Metallhaftung, die viel größer ist als die durch Koronaentladungsbehandlung oder Grundierung einer Substratschicht erhältliche. Eine weitere Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung besteht in der Bereitstellung einer metallisierten Folie, die sich durch hervorragende Haftfestigkeiten sowohl bei adhäsiver als auch bei Extrusionslaminierung und eine wesentlich verbesserte Sauerstoffbarriere auszeichnet.
- Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist ein orientierter Sauerstoffbarriere-Mehrschichtfolienverbund aus
- (a) einer Unterschicht aus Propylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer mit mindestens einer ein mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes Propylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer enthaltenden modifizierten Oberfläche und
- (b) einer metallisierten Deckschicht, enthaltend ein amorphes Polyamid oder eine Mischung aus einem amorphen Polyamid und einem teilkristallinen Polyamid auf der bzw. jeder modifizierten Oberfläche von (a).
- Dieser Folienverbund liefert eine Polyamid-Oberfläche, auf die eine metallisierte Schicht gut haftend aufgebracht werden kann.
- Bevorzugt enthält die bzw. jede modifizierte Oberfläche von (a):
- i) ein mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes Propylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer in Abmischung mit dem Propylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer der Unterschicht oder
- ii) eine getrennt aufgebrachte Deckschicht, die auf der Unterschicht ein mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes Propylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer enthält.
- Bei der Deckschicht handelt es sich zweckmäßig um ein amorphes Polyamid oder eine Mischung aus einem amorphen Polyamid und einem teilkristallinen Polyamid. Vorzugsweise weist die Unterschicht auf der Oberfläche, die der die Polyamid-Deckschicht tragenden Oberfläche gegenüberliegt, eine heißsiegelfähige Schicht auf. Die heißsiegelfähige Schicht stammt bevorzugt aus der Gruppe bestehend aus einem statistischen Copolymer aus Ethylen und Propylen und einem Terpolymer aus Ethylen, Propylen und Buten-1.
- Die Polyamidschicht kann metallisiert sein, bevorzugt mit Aluminium.
- Nach einer Ausführungsform ist die metallisierte Folie metallschichtseitig mit einer anderen Polyolefinfolie laminiert.
- Zu den hier vorgesehenen Substraten gehören u.a. Polypropylen-Homopolymere und -Copolymere; insbesondere sind isotaktische Polypropylene mit mindestens 80 Gew.-% isotaktischem Polypropylen bevorzugt. Dieses Material hat eine Dichte von etwa 0,90 bis 0,91, einen Kristallschmelzpunkt von etwa 160-165ºC und einen Schmelzindex von etwa 2-6, bevorzugt 3-4, Gramm/10 Minuten. Es ist zu etwa 80-100% und bevorzugt zu 95-96% isotaktisch. Dieser Beschreibung entsprechende Materialien sind im Handel als Exxon 4252 und ARCO W472 erhältlich.
- Zwar kann man das erfindungsgemäße Polyamid direkt auf die Oberfläche des Polypropylens bzw. Polypropylen-Copolymers aufbringen, jedoch wird die Oberfläche bevorzugt mit einem speziellen funktionalisierten Material modifiziert. Dieses kann dem Polypropylen- Substrat beigemischt oder darauf aufgebracht werden, wonach das Polyamid auf dem so modifizierten Material fest haftet. Vermischt man ein mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes Polypropylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer entweder mit dem Substrat oder trägt es als Deckschicht darauf auf und macht es so zu einem Teil der Substratoberfläche, so erhält man eine ideale Oberfläche für die Aufbringung der erfindungsgemäßen Polyamidschicht. Die modifizierte Oberflächenschicht bzw. die Deckschicht selbst lassen sich nicht von dem Propylen-Homopolymeroder -Copolymersubstrat trennen. Unter einem "mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifizierten Polypropylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer" ist das Produkt der Umsetzung von Maleinsäureanhydrid mit dem Produkt des thermischen Abbaus von Polypropylen oder Polypropylen-Copolymer zu verstehen. Beispiele für dieses Material finden sich in der US-A- 3480580; insbesondere sei auf die Beispiele 3, 4 und 6 jener Beschreibung hingewiesen.
- Das mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifizierte Polypropylen oder Polypropylen-Copolymer kann nach einem ziemlich einfachen Verfahren hergestellt werden. Beispielsweise legt man in einem 500-ml-Rundkolben aus Glas etwa 125 Gramm niederviskoses Polypropylen mit einer Viskosität von 3300 g/(cm s 10²) (Centipoise) bei 190ºC und 7,5 Gramm Maleinsäureanhydrid vor. Bei dem Kolben handelt es sich um einen Dreihalskolben mit Metallwischer, Tropftrichter und Kühler mit Dampfmantel zur Rückführung des aus der Reaktionsmischung entweichenden Maleinsäureanhydrids. Man bringt den Kolben in ein etwa 200ºC heißes Wood-Metallbad ein. Nach etwa 1 Stunde gießt man das Produkt auf ein Metallblech aus. Das wachsartige Produkt hat eine Schmelzeviskosität von 3600 g/(cm s 10²) (Centipoise) bei 190ºC und eine Verseifungszahl von 16. Analog dazu kann man niederviskose Polymere aus niedermolekularen Propylen-Ethylen-(98-96/2-4)-Copolymeren, Propylen-Buten-1-(50/50)-Copolymer, Propylen-Penten 1-(95/5)-Copolymer, Propylen-Hexen-1-(90/10)-Copolymer, Proylen-4-Methyl-1-penten-(80/20)-Copolymer, Propylen- Dodecen-1-(75/25)-Copolymer und Buten-1-Hexen-(90/10)- Copolymer herstellen. Das Propylen ist im allgemeinen mit einem anderen alpha-Olefin einschließlich Ethylen copolymerisiert.
- Die Vorgehensweise beim Einsatz eines mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifizierten Polypropylen-Homopolymers oder -Copolymers für den Fall des Einmischens in die Unterschicht sei an folgendem Beispiel erläutert. Ein mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes Polypropylen, z.B. Epolen E-43 von der Fa. Eastman Kodak wird mit einem Polypropylen-Homopolymer, wie z.B. Exxon 4252 (85 Teile) in der Schmelze zu einem 15%igen Masterbatch vermischt. Teile dieses Masterbatches werden mit 80 Teilen des Polypropylen-Copolymers trocken zu einer Harzmischung mit 3% des mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifizierten Polypropylens vermischt. Diese Mischung ergibt an der Substratoberfläche ausreichend mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes Polypropylen, um das Polyamid fest an das Substrat zu binden. Bei dem alternativen Verfahren, bei dem man das mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifizierte Polypropylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer an der Oberfläche des Substrats verfügbar macht, wird das Basispolymer zusammen mit einer das mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifizierte Polymer enthaltenden Deckschicht coextrudiert.
- Als Polyamide kommen in weiterem Sinne amorphe und teilkristalline Polyamide in Betracht. Amorphen Polyamiden fehlt jede Kristallinität, was sich am Fehlen der Kristallschmelzpunkts-Endotherme bei einer Differen tial-Scanning-Calorimetry-Messung (ASTM D3417) mit einer Aufheizrate von 10ºC/Min. zeigt. Als amorphe Polyamide kommen beispielsweise diejenigen amorphen Polymere in Betracht, die aus den folgenden Diaminen hergestellt werden: Hexamethylendiamin, 2-Methylpentamethylendiamin, 2,2,4 -Trimethylhexamethylendiamin, 2,4,4-Trimethylhexamethylendiamin, Bis(4-aminocyclohexyl)methan, 2,2-Bis (4- aminocyclohexyl)isopropyliden, 1,4-Diaminocyclohexan, 1,3-Diaminocyclohexan, meta-Xylylendiamin, 1,5-Diaminopentan, 1,4-Diaminobutan, 1,3-Diaminopropan, 2-Ethyldiaminobutan, 1,4 -Diaminomethylcyclohexan, p-Xylylendiamin, m-Phenylendiamin, p-Phenylendiamin und alkylsubstituiertes m-Phenylendiamin und p-Phenylendiamin.
- Als Polyamide kommen beispielsweise diejenigen amorphen Polymer. in Betracht, die aus den folgenden Dicarbonsäuren hergestellt werden: Isophthalsäure, Terephthalsäure, alkylsubstituierte Iso- und Terephthalsäure, Adipinsäure, Sebacinsäure, Butandicarbonsäure und dergleichen.
- Als amorphe Polyamide, die für die vorliegende Erfindung geeignet sind, seien im einzelnen genannt: Hexamethylendiamin- Isophthalamid, Hexamethylendiamin- Isophthalamid/Terephthalamid-Terpolymer mit einem Verhältnis von Isophthalsäure zu Terephthalsäure-Einheiten von 100/0 bis 60/40, Gemische aus 2,2,4- und 2,4,4-Trimethylhexamethylendiamin-Terephthalamid, Copolymere von Hexamethylendiamin und 2-Methylpentamethylendiamin mit Iso- oder Terephthalsäuren oder Gemischen dieser Säuren. Polyamide auf Basis von Hexamethylendiamin-Iso-/Terephthalamid mit hohen Gehalten an Terephthalsäure-Einheiten können sich ebenfalls als brauchbar erweisen, vorausgesetzt, daß ein zweites Diamin, wie z.B. 2-Methyldiaminopentan, eingearbeitet wird, wodurch man ein verarbeitbares amorphes Polymer erhält.
- Die obengenannten amorphen Polyamide können als Comonomere geringe Mengen von Lactamverbindungen, wie z.B. Caprolactam oder Lauryllactam, enthalten, wenngleich auf diesen Monomeren alleine basierende Polymer. nicht amorph sind. wichtig ist, daß das Polyamid als Ganzes amorph sein muß. Demnach kann man geringe Mengen dieser Comonomere einbauen, so lange sie das Polyamid nicht kristallin machen. Daneben kann das amorphe Polyamid bis zu etwa 10 Gew.-% eines flüssigen oder festen Weichmachers, wie z.B. Glycerin, Sorbit oder Toluolsulfonamid ("Santicizer 8" von Monsanto), mitenthalten.
- Für die meisten Anwendungen ist auch die Tg nicht eindeutig abgegrenzt, jedoch sind amorphe Polyamide mit einer Tg über etwa 160ºC bei Verwendung als Barriereschicht nur schwer thermoformbar. Somit haben in der Regel vollaromatische Polyamide mit aromatischen Gruppen sowohl in der Säureeinheit als auch der Amineinheit eine für das Thermoformen zu hohe Tg und sind daher gewöhnlich für die Zwecke der vorliegenden Erfindung ungeeignet.
- Wie oben bereits erwähnt, kann man das erfindungsgemäße amorphe Polyamid mit mindestens einem teilkristallinen Polyamid vermischen. Unter diesem Begriff sind herkömmliche teilkristalline Polyamide zu verstehen, die im allgemeinen aus Lactamen oder Aminosäuren, wie z.B. Nylon 6 und Nylon 11, oder durch Kondensation von Diaminen, wie z.B. Hexamethylendiamin, mit zweibasigen Säuren, wie z.B. Bernsteinsäure, Adipinsäure oder Sebacinsäure, hergestellt werden. Hierbei sind auch Copolymere und Terpolymere dieser Polyamide eingeschlossen, wie z.B. Copolymere aus Hexamethylendiamin/Adipinsäure und Caprolactam (Nylon 6,66). Außerdem kommen auch Mischungen aus zwei oder mehr kristallinen Polyamiden in Betracht. Die erfindungsgemäßen Polyamide, sowohl teilkristallin als auch amorph, werden durch die dem Fachmann wohlbekannte Kondensationspolymerisation hergestellt.
- Wie oben bereits erwähnt, bildet die Polyamiddeckschicht die Oberfläche, auf der eine Vakuummetallisierung vorgenommen wird. Ein weiterer Vorteil der Verwendung eines derartigen Polyamids besteht darin, daß man die Polyamid-Oberflächenschicht vor der Metallisierung nicht mit einer Koronaentladung behandeln muß, da sie inhärent eine Oberflächenspannung von 42 g/s² (dyn/cm) aufweist. Mit Corona- oder Flammbehandlungsverfahren sind jedoch noch höhere Oberflächenspannungen erhältlich. Die inhärente Polarität der Polyamiddeckschicht führt zu Metallhaftungsniveaus, die die mit einer behandelten Polypropylen-Homopolymer-Deckschicht erhältlichen weit übertreffen. Die metallisierte OPP-Folie zeichnet sich auch durch hervorragende Haftfestigkeit sowohl. bei adhäsiver als auch bei Extrusionslaminierung aus. Weiterhin zeichnet sich die Polyamid-Polypropylen- Basisfolie, wie es für die Metallisierung wünschenswert ist, durch eine hervorragende Sauerstoffbarriere sowie optische Klarheit und einheitliche Metallverteilung aus. Außerdem bleiben die anderen wünschenswerten Eigenschaften von metallisierter, orientierter Polypropylenfolie, wie z.B. gute Wasserdampfbarriere, erhalten.
- Selbstverständlich kann auf die erfindungsgemäße Mehrschichtfolie auch auf der der Polyamid-Oberfläche gegenüberliegenden Seite eine Heißsiegelschicht aufgebracht sein. Bevorzugte Heißsiegelschichten sind u.a. ein statistisches Copolymer aus Ethylen und Propylen und ein Terpolymer aus Ethylen, Propylen und Buten-1 usw.
- Eine dreischichtige Folie wurde unter Verwendung der folgenden Materialien coextrudiert:
- A-Schicht: aus der Kondensationsreaktion von Hexamethylendiamin und Isophthalsäureanhydrid erhaltene. amorphes Polyamid von duPont;
- B-Schicht: 50% Polypropylen-Homopolymer - 50% Mitsui QF500 (mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes Polypropylen); und
- C-Schicht: Terpolymer aus Ethylen, Propylen und Buten-1 mit 700 ppm Erucamid als Antiblockmittel.
- Das Coextrudat wurde auf einer Auf tragswalze auf 66ºC (150ºF) abgekühlt, auf Walzen auf 132ºC (270ºF) erhitzt und in Maschinenrichtung auf das 3,5fache seiner ursprünglichen Länge gestreckt. Nach Strecken auf das Achtfache ihrer ursprünglichen Breite in einem Kluppenrahmen bei 154-166ºC (310-330ºF) wurde die Folie polyamidseitig koronabehandelt und dann auf einer Rolle aufgewickelt. Die Folienbahngeschwindigkeit betrug 25,4 cm/s (50 fpm). Die Gesamtfoliendicke betrug 2,0x10&supmin;³ cm (80 gauge) Die amorphe Polyamidschicht war etwa 2,5x10&supmin;&sup4; cm (10 gauge) und die Terpolymerschicht etwa 1,8x10&supmin;&sup4; cm (4 gauge) dick. Die Oberflächenspannung der Polyamidseite dpr Folie nach der Fertigung war größer als 50 g/s² (dyn/cm). Die Folie wurde auf der Polyamiddeckschicht bis zu einer optischen Dichte von 2,5 mit Aluminium nach üblichen Verfahren vakuummetallisiert. Die Wasserdampfdurchlässigkeit der erhaltenen metallisierten Folie betrug 3,6x10&supmin;¹&sup0; g/cm² s (0,02 g/100 Zoll²/24 h) bei 38ºC (100ºF) und 90% relativer Feuchte. Die Sauerstoffdurchlässigkeit der metallisierten Folie betrug 1,8x10&supmin;&sup9; cm/s (1,0 cm³/100 Zoll²/24 h).
- Anschließend wurde die metallisierte Folie auf eine Folie aus Polyethylen niederer Dichte extrusions laminiert. Dabei wurde die metallisierte Seite der Folie abgedeckt. Die Haftfestigkeiten zwischen metallisierter Folie und Polyethylen niederer Dichte waren größer als 39 g/cm (100 g/Zoll), wobei bei Abziehversuchen kein Aluminium von der metallisierten Folie auf die Folie aus Polyethylen niederer Dichte übertragen wurde.
Claims (8)
1. Orientierter Sauerstoffbarriere-Mehrschicht
folienverbund aus
(a) einer Unterschicht aus Propylen-Homopolymer
oder -Copolymer mit mindestens einer ein mit
Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes
Propylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer enthaltenden
modifizierten Oberfläche und
(b) einer metallisierten Deckschicht, enthaltend
ein amorphes Polyamid oder eine Mischung aus
einem amorphen. Polyamid und einem
teilkristallinen Polyamid auf der bzw. jeder modifizierten
Oberfläche von (a).
2. Folienverbund nach Anspruch 1, wobei die bzw.
jede modifizierte Oberfläche von (a) enthält:
i) ein mit Maleinsäureanhydrid modifiziertes
Propylen-Homopolymer oder -Copolymer in
Abmischung mit dem Propylen-Homopolymer oder
-Copolymer der Unterschicht oder
ii) eine getrennt aufgebrachte Deckschicht, die
auf der Unterschicht ein mit Maleinsäureanhydrid
modifiziertes Propylen-Homopolymer oder
-Copolymer enthält.
3. Folienverbund nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, wobei es
sich bei der Deckschicht um ein amorphes Polyamid
handelt.
4. Folienverbund nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, wobei es
sich bei der Deckschicht um eine Mischung aus einem
amorphen Polyamid und einem teilkristallinen Polyamid
handelt.
5. Folienverbund nach einem der vorhergehenden
Ansprüche, wobei die Unterschicht auf der Oberfläche, die
der die Polyamid-Deckschicht tragenden Oberfläche
gegenüberliegt, eine heißsiegelfähige Schicht aufweist.
6. Folienverbund nach Anspruch 5, wobei die
heißsiegelfähige Schicht aus der Gruppe bestehend aus einem
statistischen Copolymer aus Ethylen und Propylen und
einem Terpolymer aus Ethylen, Propylen und Buten-1
stammt.
7. Folienverbund nach Anspruch 1, dessen Oberfläche
mit Aluminium metallisiert ist.
8. Folienverbund nach Anspruch 1, wobei die
metallisierte Folie metallschichtseitig mit einer anderen
Polyolefinfolie laminiert ist.
