Description
The present invention relates to a washing machine, in particular a washing machine for laundry or dishes for the household, which has means for reducing the hardness of the water flowing into the machine and at least one hardness sensor device for the water.
As is known, the amount of detergent used in a common type of washing depends directly on the hardness of the water used for the washing itself. In fact, if the amount of detergent is insufficient, the calcium (Ca++) and magnesium (Mg++) ions, which are responsible for the hardness of the water, neutralize the surface-active part of the detergent, which has the main function in washing, so that the washing results are not satisfactory.
If the amount of detergent is too high, a good washing result will be achieved, but the subsequent rinse cycle will not be able to remove all the detergent residues that remain in the washed item and can therefore lead to health risks in the case of dishwashing and allergies in the case of laundry.
It is therefore common practice to instruct the user through instructions and prints on detergent packages to adjust the dosage depending on the hardness of the However, sometimes the user cannot follow this advice due to difficulties in reading or interpreting or due to lack of suitable means for measuring water hardness.
In order to act on the water hardness and reduce it to an average level, without forcing the user to change the detergent dosage, some washing machines make use of special devices: special dishwashers have a softening device for the washing and rinsing water, which replaces the Ca++ and Mg++ ions in the water with sodium (Na+) ions, which are bound in the resins present in the softening device and do not affect the effectiveness of the detergent or the appearance of the washed item. Some washing machines, on the other hand, use a chemical agent, usually contained in the detergent, which can reduce the hardness of the water and acts according to its concentration during use.
However, even if you think you know the hardness of the water, it is not the same at all times, but varies according to the season or even the weather conditions. Thus, the analysis carried out during installation or the average obtained from different samples cannot prevent the disadvantage of non-uniform and sometimes unsatisfactory washing and rinsing.
In the particular case of dishwashers, the resin loses its Na+ ions at a certain point, which have to be exchanged with Ca++ and Mg++ ions in the water, then the water retains for the most part the same hardness as when it entered, even though it passes through the resin. To avoid this problem, a so-called resin regeneration phase is provided, in which a salt (NaCl) solution is introduced to wash the resin. This phase generally occurs during each wash cycle with a high consumption of salt, which must be frequently replenished by the user. A few machines provide the possibility of completely or partially excluding resin regeneration.
A 1 642 488 discloses a washing machine for laundry or dishes, which has devices for reducing the hardness of the water flowing into the machine and at least one hardness sensor device for determining the regeneration time.
Further embodiments, in the case of washing machines for laundry, use a sensor that analyses the water hardness and, according to the information received, increases or decreases the washing and/or rinsing times during the washing of the laundry. In this case, a significant reduction in the machine's efficiency is produced because, for example, if during the washing of delicate laundry the water is perceived as hard, the timer lengthens the washing and rinsing cycles to enable a thorough washing. However, this increases the wear and tear of the laundry and leads to risks of damage. In addition, additional energy and water consumption must be taken into account. The consequences in the opposite case (soft water) are obvious when very dirty laundry has to be washed.
The aim of the present invention is therefore to avoid the above-mentioned disadvantages and to provide for the use of a hardness sensor which, depending on the analysis of the water entering the machine, determines the operation of the machine in terms of resin regeneration and/or the amount of agents used to reduce water hardness.
In order to achieve the aim, the subject of the present invention is a washing machine, in particular a washing machine for laundry or for dishes for the home, which has means for reducing the hardness of the water flowing into the machine and at least one hardness sensor device for the water, characterized in that control devices are provided which, at least during a washing cycle, activate the means which reduces the hardness of the water as a function of the result measured by the sensor device.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description and from the accompanying drawings, which are given only as an explanatory but non-limiting example.
In den Zeichnungen zeigen:The drawings show:
Fig. 1 eine Ansicht einer Geschirrspülmaschine gemäß der Erfindung;Fig. 1 is a view of a dishwasher according to the invention;
Fig. 2 eine Variante der Geschirrspülmaschine gemäß der Erfindung;Fig. 2 shows a variant of the dishwasher according to the invention;
Fig. 3 shows a further variant of the dishwasher according to the invention.
In Fig. 1 a dishwasher according to the invention is shown, showing the hydraulic supply system for washing. It consists of a connection to the water pipe 1, which delivers the flowing water to a softening device 2. In this way, the resin in the softening device 2 exchanges its Na+ ions with the Ca++ and Mg++ ions of the water. At this point, the softened water is analyzed by a sensor 3 of known type; which detects the good action of the softening device. 2. The results obtained from the analysis are then collected by a programmer (timer) 4 which can convert them into signals recognisable by the user or by the machine itself. In the former case, these signals (which can be of various types: visible, by means of warning lights or acoustic, without departing from the scope of the present invention) allow the user to immediately check the degree of hardness of the softened water required for the washing and/or rinsing cycle of the dishes. In this way, it is possible to carry out the ion regeneration phase only when the ions have lost their exchange capacity, and not during each cycle.
In the automatic case, the water hardness levels, which are immediately detected and correspond to the resin consumption, are stored and integrated by means of digital or analogue devices and, when a predetermined threshold is exceeded, the latter informs the programmer to initiate regeneration. Once regeneration has taken place, the analogue and digital devices are reset.
The water thus analyzed is then introduced into the washing tank by means of a hydraulic pump 6, which forwards it to the rotating collectors 7.
Fig. 2 shows a variant of the dishwasher in Fig. 1, in which the sensor 3, which measures the hardness of the water, is placed above the softening device 2 depending on the direction of the water flow. In this way, and knowing the dishwasher cycle, the timer or the user has the possibility to detect how often the resin is used in order to effect a regeneration with the amount of solution strictly necessary to return the resin to its initial state. Also in this case, the information collected by the programmer 4 which, by means of automatic devices or signals recognisable by the user, orders the execution of the regeneration. This second solution also makes it possible to implement a variant according to which, if the water flowing in from the water mains is often already soft enough, it is not necessary to activate the softener. For example, if the dishwasher is connected to a central water softening device and the hardness sensor judges the water to be already soft, it is therefore more convenient to bypass the resin even with suitable devices and not to initiate softening or regeneration. Similarly, if the water is not very hard, it may be more efficient for only the water flowing into the tank and then heated to pass through the softener, because only by exceeding the given temperatures does the water enable the limescale to be deposited.
Fig. 3 shows another variant of Fig. 1 and 2. It consists in using two sensors 3a and 3b or, alternatively, only one sensor, which carries out two water analyses, namely in the outflow and inflow lines of the softener. In this way, it is possible to completely control the operating state of the resin and to achieve optimal regeneration. In fact, the hardness of the water flowing in from the water pipe is analysed by means of the sensor 3a and the water treated by the resin by means of the sensor 3b, in order to have at the same time, on the basis of these results, the value of the correct functioning of the softener.
The features of the washing machine described are clearly seen from the description and the attached drawings.
The advantages of the washing machine according to the invention are also obvious.
In particular, they are demonstrated by the fact that, according to each of the embodiments shown, the operation of the softening device is optimized with the consequent reduction in the consumption of salt (NaC1) used to obtain the solution necessary for the regeneration phase. Less pollution is achieved because salt that is not completely used is never discarded, as happens in known machines. The user can refill the softener's salt tank at longer intervals than in known embodiments. The regeneration of the resin takes place automatically after checking the information provided by the sensors, which inform the timer that a hardness threshold has been exceeded. In addition, the water hardness sensor analyzes the water each time it flows into the machine and measures the hardness, which can vary depending on the season and weather conditions. For this reason, it conditions the operation of the machine in order to optimize it. This is not possible with devices operated by a machine or by a user that do not immediately detect the hardness of the water used for washing or rinsing.
The immediate measurement of resin consumption makes it possible to determine the efficiency and set the best value with a regeneration cycle only when necessary.
It is obvious that many variants of the washing machine described as an example are possible for the person skilled in the art without departing from the novelty inherent in the invention.
For example, it is possible to create a laundry washing machine that has a sensor for the hardness of the water supplied by the water mains and immediately sends information to the timer or signals to the user to allow a correct dosage of detergent and/or other chemical substances, such as the water softener, which also have the function of reducing the water hardness without changing the wash cycles.
