Production of phosphorus sulfochloride The best process known so far

This process is not capable of technical application, as autoclaves are corrosive
Influence of phosphorus trichloride and the hydrochloric acid formed during the reaction

at low temperatures without pressure, e.g. B. by boiling at the boiling point
of phosphorus trichloride, seemed to be impossible up to now.

In practice, the reaction is carried out by removing the phosphorus trichloride vapors

is not necessary.

2509 sulfur are heated in an oil bath to an oil bath temperature of r95 °. The internal temperature of the reaction vessel is about 160 °. In another vessel, 500 cc of phosphorus trichloride are heated to vigorous boiling. The vapors are directed onto the molten sulfur, which is vigorously stirred. The phosphorus sulfochloride and unreacted phosphorus trichloride are condensed in a reflux condenser and flow back into the vessel filled with P C13. After about 6 hours, the reaction is terminated and the phosphorus sulfochloride is recovered by simple fractionation. Between 118 and 122 °, 205 g of a very pure phosphorus sulfochloride are obtained. The unreacted phosphorus trichloride is recovered and, like the unreacted sulfur, can be used for a new experiment. The reaction is expediently carried out in an apparatus which is illustrated schematically in the accompanying drawing. -, where A means the vessel in which the phosphorus trichloride is heated to the boil. The phosphorus trichloride vapors are fed through line B into reaction vessel C, in which the sulfur is heated. The unreacted phosphorus trichloride and the phosphorus sulfochloride formed are condensed in the cooler t7 @ and flow back into the vessel A through an additional cooler E.
