Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von biegsamen Bändern oder Fäden aus Polystyrol oder ähnlichen Kunststoffen.Manufacture of flexible strips or threads made of polystyrene or the like. Polvstyrol ist ein an sich glasklarer unhygroskopischer Kunststoff, der keine plastischen, sondern spröde Eigenschaften besitzt. Es wurde nun gefunden, daß rnan aus Polystyrol oder anderen Polymerisationsprodukten von Arylolefinen Bänder oder Fäden mit den gewünschten Eigenschaften herstellen kann, wenn man das Material bei erhöhter Temperatur aus einer Düse ausspritzt und die Fäden oder Bänder so auszieht, daß die Auszugsgeschwindigkeit größer ist als die Austrittsgeschwindigkeit aus der Düse. Die dabei entstehenden Gebilde haben einen geringeren Querschnitt als die Düse, aus der sie gezogen wurden; das Material erleidet eine Gefügeänderung, auf die die veränderten mechanischen Eigenschaften zurückzuführen sind. Die günstigsten mechanischen Eigenschaften weisen - wie Versuche ergeben haben -ein solcher Faden oder ein solches Band auf, deren Durchmesser infolge der erhöhten Auszugsgeschwindigkeit auf etwa den dritten Teil des Düsendurchmessers verringert ist. Es wurde weiter gefuhden, daß insbesondere bei Verarbeitung von Polystyrol diese mechanischen Eigenschaften am besten dann erreicht werden, wenn man die Temperatur des Materials auf i4o bis i55° hält. Ein bei diesen Versuchsbedingungen hergestellter Faden ist so biegsam, daß er bei normaler Temperatur, ohne zu brechen, .um' seinen eigenen Durchmesser gewickelt werden kann. Auch bei der Herstellung von Bändern haben sich die oben beschriebenen Versuchsbedingungen als die günstigsten erwiesen.
