Process for the preparation of alkoxymethylfurfurols and levulinic acid alkyl esters
The subject of the main patent 632 322 is a process for the production of Alkoxyxnethylfurfurolen
and the corresponding levulinic acid alkyl esters by the action of alcoholic
Hydrochloric acid on fructose or. fructose-containing carbohydrates. This implementation takes place
held at temperatures from zoo to izo °, at which glucose and glucose-containing carbohydrates
deliver only the corresponding Al @ oholglucoside.
(vgl. Berichte 56 [x923], Seite ioo2).
Die im Journal of the American Chemical Society 53 1193I]. Seite 2327, angegebenen

It has now surprisingly been found that, in the same way as in the main patent 632 322, glucose and glucose-containing carbohydrates can also be converted into the same end products, if the concentration of the hydrohalic acid and the temperature are correspondingly higher. However, while fructose and fructose-containing carbohydrates give an oil mixture according to the lower reaction temperature, which consists mainly of alkoxyrnethylfurol and to a lesser extent of levulinic acid alkyl ester, as expected, an oil mixture is obtained from glucose or glucose-containing carbohydrates in which the levulinic acid alkyl esters predominate. The alkoxymethylfurfurols also primarily formed at the higher temperature are converted to a greater extent under the more severe conditions into the corresponding alkyl levulinate (cf. Reports 56 [x923], page ioo2). The yields achieved are about 25 to 350% of the carbohydrate used. These are yields that are otherwise at best achieved in the direct production of levulinic acid from carbohydrates. Those in the Journal of the American Chemical Society 53 1193I]. Page 2327, the yields given relate to theory and, when converted to the amount of sugar used, give numbers that vary between 24 and 290 /. The esterification is then a. Completely new chemical process which `` leads to a further reduction in the yield - so that the technical progress of the present process, in which the more valuable esters are obtained immediately in one reaction, is obvious.
