PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
In der Literatures. Beilstein, Org. Chem., II. Aufl., Bd. In the Literatures. Beilstein, Org. Chem., II. Ed., Vol. II, p. 951) one finds the information that salicylic acid when heated carefully Sublimated undecomposed, with rapid distillation partly in carbonic acid and phenol disintegrates, and the same decomposition slowly occurs when heated with water in the containment tube 220 to 230 ° suffers. This information is therefore inaccurate respectively. incorrect than it is Neither careful nor rapid heating is important, just a matter of what temperatures salicylic acid is heated. Salicylic acid sublimes only below the melting point undecomposed, above it, decomposition always takes place, at temperatures a little above the melting point to a very slight extent, and at higher temperatures to an increasing extent with the increase thereof.
It has now been found, that salicylic acid when heated to high temperatures, approximately from 160 to 240 0, is reacted with water and carbon dioxide elimination to salol, when the resulting water distilled off during the heating and the access of air is prevented thunlichst.
So far, Salol was made by treating salicylic acid and phenol with dehydrating agents Means. That the salol formation occurring according to the present invention has been overlooked so far is explained by the fact that, under normal conditions, when heating Salicylic acid at high temperatures receives little or no Salol because this or the intermediate products that mediate its formation through the previously split off water or are decomposed again by the action of the air and because also small quantities Salol are difficult to perceive as this dissolves easily in phenol and out of it does not separate by itself. In these circumstances it is questionable whether that is the case with the ordinary Phenol which occurs when salicylic acid is heated is a direct product of its decomposition is.
If this is assumed anyway, the salol formation occurring according to the present invention would occur can be explained in such a way that under the given conditions this is achieved by decomposition of a MolecUls of the acid formed phenol, and that immediately with elimination of water with a second molecule of the acid connects according to the equations:
ι. C6 ι. C 6
= C O2 + C6 H5 O H; = CO 2 + C 6 H 5 OH;
2. C6 t c 2. C 6 tc
— H2 0 + C - H 2 O + C
C6H5 0 HC 6 H 5 0 H
The union of salicylic acid with phenol without the aid of dehydrating agents would have to be traced back to the action of phenol in statu nascendi , since the two components do not combine under normal conditions.
On the other hand, and this is more likely, they can initially emerge under water Anhydrides or anhydride-like compounds
B. in folgender Weise:fertilize the salicylic acid, which continues to be carbonated intramolecularly or react with undecomposed salicylic acid and thus induce salol formation, z. With this view, the formation of anhydride within the hydroxyl groups is more likely because the addition of phenol does not increase the yield. If the conditions already mentioned are complied with, the theoretical yield of salol can easily be obtained, i.e. 1.4 to 1.5 kg of salol from 2 kg of salicylic acid without the use of phenol and dehydrating agents. The procedure is for this purpose as follows: pure or crude salicylic acid is heated for about 4 hours in a bath 220-230 0th The vessel containing the acid, made of glass or other suitable material, has a narrow neck that extends so far out of the bath that it has a temperature at which the rising water vapor does not flow back condensed into the vessel, but into one on the neck The water trap that sits on top of it, in the manner of the well-known Fractionskölbchen, arrives, from which the water can flow away by means of a drainage pipe. If the neck of the vessel is not kept warm above the temperature necessary for the above purpose, which may possibly be achieved by cooling, no other substance will escape through the narrow neck apart from the water and the carbonic acid which is split off. To exclude the air, the vessel is filled with an inert gas, e.g. B. carbonic acid, and conducts a very weak stream of gas through the water trap in the during heating. Direction after the drain pipe. The resulting salol is washed with water and, if necessary, with soda solution, and recrystallized from alcohol or other suitable solvents.
