Die Depolymerisation vollzieht sich z. B. vorteilhaft durch Erhitzen des polymeren Brassylsäizreäthylenesters unter einem Druck unterhalb 20 mm, zweckmässig unterhalb 1 mm, wenn eine genügend hohe Temperatur, um die Entpolymerisierung zu veranlassen, aber nicht;
<I>Beispiel:

Process for the preparation of monomeric ethylene brassylate. It is known that certain, high-membered, cyclic compounds such as cyelic ketones, lactones and carbonates have highly characteristic smells, so that they can serve as admixtures of perfumes. For example, musk and zibeth are mainly active in cyclic ketones with 15 to 17 members.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of the monomeric ethylene brassylate, which is characterized in that polymeric ethylene brassylate is depolymerized by heating, for example to a temperature of approximately 150 ° C. The temperature is expediently kept in such a way that no undesired decomposition occurs.
He can be heated in the presence of a chloride, a nitrate, a carbonate or an oxide of the following divalent metals: magnesium, manganese, cadmium, iron, cobalt, tin and lead, and under reduced pressure in an apparatus which is used for the removal of the volatile reaction products is suitable to take place.
The polyester is z. B. obtained by heating approximately bleach molecular parts of ethylene glycol and brassylic acid for several hours at 150-225 C under conditions that allow the escape of the released water.
The reaction can be illustrated by the following formulas: #; HOCH2CH2OH @ + x HOOC (CH @), 1COOH HOCH2CH @ 0 [CO (CH -.) "COOCH., CH ;; O]" CO (CH,) 11COOH -I- (2x-1) H20. For the linear polymeric ethylene brassylate, x is likely to be 17. An esterification or intermediate ester formation catalyst can be used in the reaction.
It is also advisable to produce the polyester with a slight excess of ethylene glycol, since it has been found to be advantageous for depolymerization.
The polymeric ethylene brassylate obtained by the method described above can be directly depolymerized without purification. It is even advisable to depolymerize the polyester in the same vessel in which it was formed.
The depolymerization takes place z. B. advantageous by heating the polymeric Brassylsäizreäthylenesters under a pressure below 20 mm, advantageously below 1 mm, if a high enough temperature to cause the depolymerization, but not;
so high that destructive decomposition occurs, ie between 150 and 3.75 ° C, advantageously kept between 225-300 ° C and in an apparatus suitable for removing the volatile monomeric ethylene brassyl ester and any water that may be formed is being worked.
The most satisfactory results are obtained by carrying out the depolymerization in the presence of a catalyst belonging to the group consisting of the chlorides, nitrates, carbonates and oxides of magnesium, manganese, cadmium, iron, cobalt, tin and lead in their divalent state. Appropriately z. B. 0.1 to 2.0 / n (based on the polyester) of catalyst be used, but considerable amounts are not harmful.
The polyester / catalyst mixture can be obtained by simple mixing or by introducing the catalyst into the polyester during its preparation.
The main product of the depolymerization of the polymeric brassylsilicate, ureethylene ester is the cyclic monomer, but some dimer is usually also formed. The relative amounts of monomers and dimers produced depend, among other things, on the catalyst used.
The yield of monomers is usually greater when a highly reactive catalyst is used. With a highly active catalyst such as tin and magnesium chloride, the depolymerizate is almost entirely monomeric. <I> example:
Polymeric ethylene brassylate was prepared by heating chemically equivalent amounts of ethylene glycol and brassylic acid to 200 ° C. for two hours and finally heating the residue to 225 ° C. for a short time under partially reduced pressure to aid in the removal of water formed.
The polymer obtained was a brown, solid mass melting at 65.degree. The depolymerization of the polyester was carried out by heating a mixture of 60 parts by weight of the polymer and 0.7 parts by weight of tin chloride at 270 ° C. and 1 mm absolute pressure in a glass still heated with the vapors of o-chlorodiphenyl.
There was a rapid distillation first, which gradually decreased until it practically stopped. The depolymerization takes 5 hours. The distillate was a pale yellow liquid of 43.5 parts by weight, representing a 72% yield of the depolymerized. The distillate was washed with water, extracted with ether, dried with calcium chloride and, after removal of the ether, distilled under reduced pressure.
The purified product consisted mainly of monomeric ethylene brassylate, which boils at 148 to 150 ° C under 2 mm pressure.
It has a pleasant smell of noschus-cibeth. Other properties are:

EMI0003.0006
The monomeric Brassylstreäthylenester has a penetrating musk-zibeth odor. This is illustrated by the following attempt. Filter paper strips were immersed in a dilute alcoholic solution of ethyl brassylate and then exposed to air, which allowed the alcohol to evaporate.
Similar paper strips were dipped and treated under the same conditions in an alcoholic solution of the cyclic lactone from omega hydroxypentadecanoic acid. The smell of the paper strips was checked from time to time. During the first three days the strips dipped in lactone had a somewhat stronger odor than the other strips. After the third day, however, the odor of the strips immersed in ethyl benzylate was more pronounced than that of the strips treated with lactone.
This shows that the odor of the ethyl brassylate is more persistent than that of the otnegahydroxypentadecanoic acid lactone, which is regarded as a good substitute for musk. This property of the ethylene brassylate makes it particularly valuable as a fixative in perfume compositions.
As already indicated, various catalysts can be used. Ferrochloride, cobalt chloride, cobalt nitrate, magnesium carbonate, magnesium oxide, maganocarbonate, etc. can also be mentioned as examples.
Of other substances which accelerate the depolymerization, but to a lesser extent, the alkali and alkaline earth metals, hydroxides, carbonates, alcoholates, etc. should be mentioned. Certain metals, especially magnesium, also act as catalysts.
The temperature which has been found to be the most favorable for the depolymerization is between 225-300 ° C. The depolymerization can be carried out in a conventional distillation apparatus or in an apparatus for molecular distillation.
The depolymerization of the polymeric ethylene brassylate has been found to be the most suitable method for the production of mono merem ethylene brassylate.
Because of its characteristic scent, the monomeric ethylene b @ rassylate can be used alone or in conjunction with other substances in the composition of perfumes, toilet water, beauty water, soaps, incense and the like.
The close resemblance of this odor to the odor of natural musk and its fixative power make it valuable as a substitute for this _material. In general, the addition of 0.01% Bra..syläuräthylenest® r to perfume compositions such as amber, jasmine and rose, is sufficient to perfect their smell.
Ethylene brassate is an effective fixative in these compositions and in this respect is similar to natural musk or the lactone from angelica oil.
