Process for the preparation of 2,3-dihalo-4-aniino-1-methylbenzene-5-and-6-sulphonic acid It has been found that (let the sulphonic acids of 2,3-dihalo-i-.iniino-i -metlivlbenzols obtained when subjecting this base to the sulfonation, depending on the type of sulfonation, one or the other of the two possible sulfonic acids is obtained in the treatment with concentrated sulfuric acid alone at temperatures from about iSo to: 2oo 'as well as when the corresponding amount of fuming sulfuric acid is added to a solution of the base in concentrated sulfuric acid at a considerably lower temperature, e.g. at 100 to 130' the 2,3-dihalo-4-amiiioi-inetliylbeiizol-6-sulfonic acid in predominant amount in addition to very little 5-sulfonic acid when treated with a large excess of heavily fuming sulfuric acid.
It is not absolutely necessary to represent the desired stilfonic acids
to start from pure 2,3-dihalo-4-ainino-i-niethylben7ol, but], poor too
in the same way a technical mixture of 2,3-dihalo- and 2,5-dihalogen-4 # aminoinethylbenzene
style. While the 2,3-dilialogen-4-amino-r-methylbenzene is easy
Lets sulfonate, the 2,5-dihalogen - j-ai-nino-i-rnetlivlbeiizol itself remains with
energetic stylization according to the methods described unchanged and lets you see
easily from the 2, 3-dibalogues obtained in each case - j-aiiiiiio-i-methvlbenzolstilfoiis'
remove acid.

For example, the sodium salt of 2,3-dichloro-4-amino-i-methylbenzene-6-sulfonic acid is very easily soluble - in contrast to that of 5-sulfonic acid, which is very sparingly soluble, especially in the presence of a little sodium chloride. The unchanged 2,5-dichloro-4-aminQ-i-methylbenzene from the F. 89 to gi 'remains on the filter. The filtrate is stirred cold and the small amount of the sparingly soluble sodium salt of 2,3-dichloro-4-amino-i-methylbenzene-5-sulfonic acid is precipitated. This sparingly soluble sodium salt of S-sulfonic acid is then also filtered off and the: 2,3-dichloro-4-amino-i-methylbenzene-6-sulfonic acid is separated from the filtrate with mineral acid.
