Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
In a number of previous patents we have described processes and apparatus which., were devised by us to obtain chlorine from calcium chloride and in a for to make the trade usable in a suitable form.
Experience has given us several difficulties and deficiencies both in the procedure as well can be recognized by the apparatus, and although these already have a considerable number of products we have modified several essential points.
The mixture. After we realized that the mixtures of calcium chloride and alumina-containing material decompose more easily as mixtures with siliceous material, we have observed that it is impossible is such a mixture without the development of hydrochloric acid to the point of being completely driven away to dry their water content. It is certainly only advantageous to reduce the amount of hydrochloric acid which is parallel which forms chlorine, and in order to achieve this we now first burn the clay in particular, so that its constitutional water is driven away and a decomposition material results, which at the same time has the advantages of siliceous and alumina-containing substances. This drainage can be done that the clay is calcined in the form of briquettes in suitable ovens and placed on top crushed to powder, or any other suitable means.
The ovens. So far, in the construction of the chlorine furnaces, our efforts have been constant those sustaining the combustion or those resulting from the combustion To keep gases from the reaction field; because the chlorine expresses a strong desire to combine with the carbon dioxide and thus to form carbonyl chloride, from which one cannot regain it in its active form. But all of these from the outside to be heated through a considerable thickness of refractory material Ovens require a very considerable amount of heat. From theoretical considerations, which at first gave us the idea that the action of the air on something mixed with silica or clay Calcium chloride is exothermic - or at least it could be neutral, we have then further concluded that if the heating were moved inside, it would be done with so little effort on fuel it would be possible to effect the formation of carbonyl chloride reduction except for those who do not have a say. The trials have ours Confirmed expectation.
Our method of working now consists in carrying out the decomposition in a high tower, which is constructed of masonry and externally protected against heat radiation by a very thick casing with a poor heat conductor, and the gases produced from coke emit the fuel at the same time as their combustion entertaining air and to bring about the reaction Ca CP -f- Si O 2 + O = Ca O Si O 2 + CP air necessary to blow into the interior of the furnace.
The material to be subjected to decomposition, composed as indicated above, fills the tower from top to bottom, depending on its calcium chloride content, with. Pieces of refractory material mingled or not, as in a previous patent described, serve as heat regenerators.
The apparatus is in operation. So there is a standing cylinder, in its middle one Height of a wreath opening pipe socket which supplies carbon oxide and from its lower Part of a current of air moves upwards. We must have several in this cylinder Differentiate zones. First a combustion zone; it begins exactly at the level of the irrigated nozzle and "extends only over a small part of the height of the furnace. When the material to be treated in this Reaches the zone, it must already be completely decomposed; otherwise it would be with the Carbon oxide meet and this would destroy the active chlorine. Direct The decomposition zone is located above the combustion zone. There is no in this zone Carbon oxide more available; the same is completely burned and by a few hundredths Replaced by carbonic acid, which does not affect the reaction. Within this a few meters In the high zone, the material is on red embers, and is methodically heated instead, because it sinks towards the glowing gases. The upper regeneration zone extends above the decomposition zone; for the gases which have reacted would carry away a great deal of heat, if they were not allowed to meet the same weight of material just coldly introduced from above, which one they gradually give off their warmth until finally they in turn escape cold from the tower.
In the lower part of which the carbon dioxide supplying nozzle from there is a lower one Heat generation zone. The mass located on bright red would take a lot of heat with it, if you didn't meet them with the rising cold air stream. By combining the quantities subject to treatment with the heat capacities, one arrives at such a complete regeneration of heat that the decomposed mass exits the oven cold at the bottom.
We think it useful to add that instead of carbon dioxide one also uses can blow air laden with solid fuel, crushed into dust, into the tower.
The simpler thought, the solid fuel turned to dust under the mixture to mix from calcium chloride and clay, or the solid fuel in mixed We do not absolutely reject the introduction of pieces directly; because it seems like the small amounts of fuel required for the process could not have a harmful effect, however so far the experience has been an unfavorable one.
The absorption. As a consequence of the modifications we made in our process A great difficulty arose, the chlorine produced for the preparation of chlorinated lime to utilize. It has been shown that. Diluted chlorine makes a very good chlorinated lime can arise, but it must not contain carbonic acid. On the other hand, one only prevents trace presence of carbonic acid the production of a chlorinated lime of the desired Gravity. But now, as a result of our innovations, we voluntarily carry carbon dioxide not only in traces, but in several hundredths of the chlorine.
We have found that the production of liquid chlorinated lime in no way is affected by the presence of carbonic acid. While here everything Chlorine is absorbed, part of the carbonic acid escapes absorption by the Lime, and the rest forms calcium carbonate, which is not a hindrance by making it insoluble State fails.
So we get liquid chlorinated lime, and there we on the other hand in our main reaction cannot prevent the formation of a certain quantity of hydrochloric acid, so we condense this hydrochloric acid and use it to attack the generated liquid chlorinated lime. we thus obtain concentrated chlorine gas and pass this over in the usual manner Lime or the imperfect chlorine lime produced by means of the diluted chlorine and thus bring it to the desired degree.
We can do that resulting from the modified process and through carbonic acid Use contaminated chlorine to generate chlorates.
We by no means intend to merely relate the innovations described in this patent limit the decomposition of calcium chloride alone. You can also apply find the decomposition of chlorine magnesium, of chlorine magnesium in its Stafsfurt mineral combinations, such as ever to the decomposition of chlorures respectively. Chorids on the dry road.
