Während des Krieges hat man in verschiedener Weise versucht, die uns nur in beschränkter Menge zur Verfügung stehenden Schmieröle durch Ersatzmittel zu strecken oder ganz zu ersetzen. Die größte Schwierigkeit boten in dieser Hinsicht die Zylinderschmieröle; an diese Öle werden besonders hohe Anforderungen gestellt, sowohl hinsichtlich der Reinheit wie auch in bezug auf Flammpunkt und Viskosität. Die Versuche, inländische Öle für Zylinderschmierung zu benutzen, haben bislang nicht zu einem durchschlagenden Erfolg geführt; die Schwierigkeiten, die sich in der Praxis boten, waren so groß, daß man sofort nach Kriegsende auf die altbewährten ausländischen Zylinderschmieröle wieder zurückgriff, sobald man sie nur erhalten konnte.Process for the preparation of lubricating oil emulsions. Sie besitzt weiterhin so. vorzügliche Schmiereigenschaften, z. B. für Dampfmaschinenzylinder, daß man sie als einen vollwertigen inländischen Ersatz für ausländische Zvlinderschmieröle bezeichnen kann.
