Description

With the previously known optical glasses it has not been possible to achieve a lower refractive index than nD - 1.4637 and a lower color dispersion than corresponding to the value v - 70.6 . These values do not even appear together, but the value saD - 1.4637 is combined with the value v - 65.6, and the value v - 70.6 is combined with the value nD - 1, .186o. According to the invention, however, lenses with an even lower refraction and an even lower color dispersion can be made if they are made from sodium fluoride. For this substance is approximately: 11.D = 1.3257i v - 8q., 5.

This substance is right with regard to the relative dispersion good with crown glass.

The considerable expansion of the limits set by the previous glasses, achieved through the introduction of sodium fluoride into technical optics, extends beyond those that could be achieved through the use of natural fluorspar. For even if fluorspar shows an even lower color dispersion with v - 95.1 , its refraction with 11D _-_ 1.4339 is considerably higher than that of sodium fluoride. As a result, this substance, whose crystallization can be achieved artificially from readily available raw materials, can not only replace the increasingly rare natural fluorspar in many cases, but may also be more suitable than fluorspar in certain cases (e.g. to improve the spherical defects). It can also be foreseen that lenses made of sodium fluoride together with those made of fluorspar will achieve beneficial effects beyond what has been achieved so far (e.g. to achieve an undercorrection of the spherical error - together with an overcorrection of the color error).
