Abstract

Method of phosphating steel and/or Zn coated steel with opt. Al present in the coating consists of treating the surface at 40-60 deg.C with an aqueous phosphate soln. contg. 0.4-5.0 g/l Mg; 0.05-2.0 Ni; 8-20 P2O5 and at least one oxidising agent in which the ratio of free to total acid is 0.02-0.15:1. When Al is not present the Zn concentration of the phosphate solution is 0.4-1.0 g/l in a spray method and 0.9-1.5 g/l in a spray/dip and dip method. When Al is present the respective values for the Zn concn. are 0.7-1.0 g/l and 1.4-2.0 g/l with 80-400 mg/l fluoride being added and determined by a submerged fluoride sensitive electrode.
