Abstract

Steel or partially zinc coated steel is phosphate coated by activating in an aqueous, weak, alkali solution containing titanium phosphate followed by dipping into a phosphate solution at 40-60 deg.C which contains 1.8-5 g/l Zn; 0.1-7 g/l Fe2+; 8-25 g/l P2O5; 5-30 g/l WO3. The solution has a ratio of free acid to total acid of 0.04-0.07.
