Description

Process for the production of hard rubber-like, plastic masses Cellulose derivatives. It is already known, hard rubber and rubber-like compounds produced by adding 50 parts by weight of collodion wool with or without an additive of solvents with at least 50 parts by weight of such ureas or thioureas gelatinized, in which all hydrogen atoms by organic radicals or whose halogen derivatives have been replaced. Celluloid-like ones became celluloid-like by this procedure Masses received, which, however, were unable to introduce themselves into industry.

It has now been found that hard rubber-like masses of extraordinarily favorable properties can be obtained if about 21 parts by weight of cellulose derivatives, z. B. nitrocellulose, acetyl cellulose, in a water-containing state without the addition of Alcohol or other solvents with about 16 parts by weight of gelatinizing agents, such as B. Trichloräthylacetanilid, Athylazetanilid, triphenyl phosphate, acetic acid glycerol ester, Phthalic acid dimethyl ester etc., so more gelatinizing agents than for gelatinizing of the cellulose derivatives in question is required, mixed, with the addition of a very large amount of filling materials, such as carbonate of lime, gypsum, barite, Cork meal, asbestos meal, peat meal, etc. (about 63 parts by weight), the mass then up to heated to remove the water and then the product obtained under pressure and Bringing warmth into suitable forms. The compacts obtained in this way immediately hold the i ight dimension and preserve the same, as they in no way shrink and do not need to be dried afterwards. From the procedure of the German patent specification 191454 the present method differs in that not only collodion wool, but any nitrocellulose of various degrees of nitration and other cellulose esters can be used, furthermore by having very large amounts Filling materials can be incorporated into the mass. It was unforeseeable that with the addition of such large amounts of fillers a compressible mass at all could be obtained.

Example: About 400 g nitrocellulose, corresponding to 21 parts, are intimately mixed with about 26o g water and 12oo g heavy spar, corresponding to 63 parts, in the kneading machine for about half an hour. About 300 g of one of the common gelatinizing agents, such as ethyl azetanilide, corresponding to 16 parts, are then added to this mixture. Now the mass is kneaded intimately for about another hour at normal temperature. The contents of the mixer are now heated and kneading is continued until all the water has evaporated. The resulting mass is then brought into molds in the appropriate amount and molded under pressure at a temperature of about 130 °, the mold is cooled and overturned, whereupon the finished pressed body falls out immediately ready for use.
