Process for the production of polyhydric alcohols. In the main patent
3695o2 a process for the production of polyhydric alcohols has been described,
according to which chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons in the presence of alkali
or alkaline earth carbonates and water are heated in a closed vessel. Here
is already (as with the previously known process of glycol production
from ethylene bromide, and caustic alkali) a lot of water is used, the second larger
than that of the halogenated hydrocarbon. It all turned out that
you especially when using the chlorinated hydrocarbons and: the bicarbonates
a much better course of the reaction, namely a better yield
of alcohol is obtained if the reaction is carried out in the presence of a dilution beyond the usual
lets go of a considerable amount of water, that is, a multiple
the amount of water used according to the main patent. One is chlorinated to 1 part by weight
Hydrocarbons can count about 50 to 70 parts of water; so it always has to
in the reaction vessel an extremely large excess of water over the to be processed
chlorinated hydrocarbons may be present.
This can be done in the manufacture of e.g. B. can be achieved by glycol,
that one the ethylene chloride gradually in smaller amounts in: the reaction vessel
introduces, so that in the latter always a large amount of liquid to a relatively
a small amount of ethylene chloride is present. For example, you can work as follows
are: Goo parts by weight are placed in a pressure-resistant vessel equipped with a stirrer
Sodium bicarbonate filled in and about 3,000 parts by weight of water. Then. puts
the stirrer: in motion and add about 50 parts by weight of ethylene chloride.
After about '-] 2 hours again 50 parts by weight of Ethylenchlori @ d are pressed in,
and so on, until a total of about 500 parts by weight of ethylene chloride in the course of 5
Hours have been placed in the vessel. The yield of glycol can be
in this way, increase to over 90 percent of the theoretical in safe operations.
an
It has also been shown that in this embodiment of the reaction
carbonates can also be used. If the method z. B. using
v5n soda solution is started, a carbonic acid atmosphere is created in the reaction vessel,
which together with the soda solution causes the formation of bicarbonate. It can therefore
also instead of bicarbonates, as stated in the main patent, carbonate as the starting material
to serve. The procedure is similar to the examples given above, but with
at
Put the goo parts by weight of sodium bicarbonate only about 65o parts by weight
Sodium carbonate are introduced.
The advantage in using the carbonates is based on their larger size
Solubility so that it becomes possible to use them in concentrated solution and
in liquid form to introduce into the reaction vessels while adding the bicarbonates
is usually forced to introduce in solid form.
