Abstract

For measurement of propagation time a microcomputer routes transmission circuit output to a transducer. The microcomputer (45) initiates two cycles of operation by triggering switching circuits which control counter start and stop flip flops. A sequencer resets circuits including a latch which inhibits effects of signals for a given period. The latch also reduces gains of amplifiers for a period and then allows their gains to be increased for reception of the echo signal. When the microcomputer has acquired the counter contents the propagation time is measured in the reverse direction. A third sequence of operations determines the difference in propagation times to determine direction of flow. By applying compensation for parasitic delays to the times and by integration the speed of flow is calculated.
