1. A license plate holder for a motor vehicle comprising: a base having a size substantially the same as the surface area of a license plate to be held thereby, a peripheral wall surrounding the base, and a plurality of lips extending inwardly from the top of the wall and protruding over the base.

2. License plate holder according to claim 1, which is molded from a plastic material.

3. License plate holder according to claim 1 or 2, which is molded from polystyrene.

7. A license plate holder according to claim 6, wherein the holes are formed in a part of the holder that lies behind the area occupied by the back of the license plate when it is in position.

8. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, in which the corners of the base are provided with a radius.

9. A license plate holder according to any preceding claim, wherein the peripheral wall is continuous around the base.

10. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, in which the height of the wall corresponds to the thickness of a license plate to be attached to the holder.

11. A license plate holder according to any preceding claim, wherein the walls at the corners of the holder follow the contour of the base.

12. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, in which the lips are arranged at regular intervals around the wall.

13. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, in which the lips occupy less than 50 percent of the length of the wall.

14. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, in which the lips occupy less than 25 percent of the length of the wall.

15. A license plate holder according to any preceding claim, wherein the lips occupy approximately 10 percent of the length of the wall.

16. A license plate holder according to any preceding claim, wherein the lips extend only from the inner surface of the wall.

17. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, in which the lips are formed from the same plastic material as the rest of the holder.

18. A license plate holder according to any preceding claim, wherein the corners of the plate are held behind lips positioned on at least one side of each corner of the plate, proximate to and equidistant from the corner.

19. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, in which the lips are arranged opposite one another on opposite sides of the holder.

20. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, in which the lips are wedge-shaped when viewed in cross section.

21. The license plate holder of claim 20, wherein the narrow end of the wedge extends beyond the base while the wide end is integrally formed with the wall.

22. A license plate holder according to any preceding claim, wherein the base has openings through its thickness where the lips are located so that retractable molding pins can be inserted to mold the lips.

23. License plate holder according to one of the preceding claims, which is formed integrally with a motor vehicle.

24. A license plate holder according to any preceding claim, which is an integral part of a bumper made of plastics material.
