Es ist seit langem eine bedeutende Aufgabe für die Fabrikation von Seife, einen Teil der diese bildenden Fettsäuren durch andere Stoffe zu ersetzen, die in ihrer Wirkung den fettsauren Alkalien' nahestehen. Außer einigen wenig zugänglichen Substanzen, wie den Gallensäuren oder den Naphtensäuren, sind geeignete organische Produkte nicht gefunden, so daß man auf bestimmte anorganische Verbindungen zurückgreifen mußte, die aber mehr den Charakter von Füllmaterialien (Bolus, Marmor, Ton) hatten oder als Bleichmittel wirkten (Perborate). Es wurde nun gefunden, daß bestimmte leicht zugängliche und geruchlose Oxysäuren in hervorragendem Maße befähigt sind, für Wasch und Reinigungszwecke die höheren Fettsäuren ganz oder teilweise zu ersetzen.
