Description

KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL

PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.

Rouen, Band 10, 1882, S. 471).If concentrated sulfuric acid is allowed to act on cotton, it takes on a transparent, parchment-like appearance, as Mercer in 1844 and others later observed. According to Mercer, the effect should be achieved by a sulfuric acid of 49.5 to 55.5 ° Be, which is mainly due to the fact that the cellulose changes in its tinctorial properties, while B Io η del (Bull. Rouen, Volume 10, 1882 , P. 438, 471/472) has observed that a sulfuric acid of 45 to 50 0 Be gives the cellulose the ability to stain vividly with methylene blue, whereas a parchment effect only takes place between 53 to 55 ° Be (Bull. Rouen, Volume 10, 1882, p. 471).

Tatsächlich läßt sich feststellen, daß eineIn fact, it can be seen that one

Sulfuric acid with a concentration of 51 ° Βέ and exerts a completely different effect on cellulose from that which it does Concentration is below 51 ° Be. While higher concentrated acid takes seconds Such an effect gives the cotton fabric a typical, transparent, parchment-like appearance from Z. B. 50 ° Be even with an exposure time of z. B. 15 minutes a change not to bring about the cellulose in the same sense; also this is in opposition to an acid that is only slightly stronger is not weakened even after a prolonged reaction.

The present invention is based on the observation that the action of Sulfuric acid below 51 ° Be is much more intense and completely new to cotton It confers properties if it is mercerized beforehand and thus made more reactive became. If a cotton fabric, which has been mercerized and, expediently, also bleached, is exposed to the action of sulfuric acid from 49 to 50.5 ° Be (the best effect is achieved between 49.5 and 50.5 ° Be), in this way the mercerising gloss of the same disappears, and instead of that at higher concentrations The transparency achieved gives the fabric a fine, slightly crepe-like texture, which means it is denser, fuller, more woolly, softer, generally improved in all of its quality appears and takes on the character of a fine woolen fabric. The whole effect is one completely new, as it was previously unknown on cotton fabric.

The process can be applied to smooth, patterned and embroidered fabrics. Patterned effects can also be created on smooth fabrics using the same method in such a way that sulfuric acid from z. B. 50 ° Be imprinted and washes out after exposure. You can also use a suitable reserve, ζ. B. Rubber thickening, print and then immerse the whole fabric in sulfuric acid and wash it out. To those In places where the acid has acted, the tissue shows the change described above, while the unprinted or reserved areas change the appearance of the unchanged, Maintaining mercerized cotton. In this way, designs are obtained in which the glossy, mercerized cotton is sharp stands out from the matt, wool-like, acid-treated areas.

The duration of exposure to the sulfuric acid depends on the nature of the treating tissue. The change of the same can be done in a few seconds, however also take several minutes. A longer exposure time than for Achieving the effect is necessary, for. B. 15 minutes or more, usually works not disadvantageous.
