Neue Phenol-Stabilisatoren
Die Erfindung betrifft neue Phenole, die als Antioxidantien
geeignet sind, ihre Herstellung, und ihre Verwendung zum Stabilisieren von Polymeren und organischem Material, die
normalerweise dem oxidativen Abbau unterliegen.
Aus der US-PS 3,655,718 sowie den auf die gleiche Erfindung
zurückgehenden und weitgehend offenbarungsgleichen US-PS 3,510,507 und der DT-OS 2.016.296 sind Polycarbonate bekannt,
die als wirksame Antioxidantien für Polyolefine, wie Polypropylen beschrieben werden. So wird im Beispiel VB der US-PS
3,655,718 ein Polycarbonat der Formel

als Antioxidants für Polyolefine beschrieben. Aehnliche Verbindungen
sind auch aus der US-PS 3,579,561 bekannt.
Diese bekannten Polycarbonate zeichnen sich durch eine zwischen jeweils zwei Phenylresten stehende Methylengruppe aus,
die unsubstituiert ist oder Alkyl oder Aryl trägt. Obgleich diesen Polycarbonaten eine antioxidative Wirkung in Polyolefinen
zukommt, ist diese für eine Anwendung in der Praxis nicht ausreichend.
Ausgehend von diesem Stand der Technik offenbart die vorliegende Erfindung neue Phenole, denen eine ausgezeichnete antioxidative
Wirkung in Polymeren, insbesondere in Polyolefinen zukommt. Dabei handelt es sich um Phenole der Formel I

Die neuen Phenole der Formel I können in an sich bekannter Weise erhalten werden, z.B. dadurch, dass man ein Phenol der

mit einer Säure Y(0H)~ oder einem reaktionsfähigen Derivat
davon umsetzt, worin alle Symbole obige Bedeutung haben.
Vorzugsweise verwendet man in obiger Reaktion ein reaktionsfähiges
Derivat einer Säure Y(OH)?, wie ein Säurehalogenid,
insbesondere Säurechlorid, oder einen Ester, wie einen Alkyl-
oder Aryl-ester. Falls Y Carbonyl ist, verwendet, man z.B.
Phosgen oder einen Kohlensäureester, wie Diphenylcarbonat,
falls Y Thiocarbonyl ist, verwendet man z.B. Thiophosgen, falls Y SuIfinyl ist, verwendet man z.B. Thionylchlorid, falls
Y Sulfonyl ist, verwendet man z.B. Sulfurylchlorid, falls Y -P(OR7)- ist, verwendet man z.B. R7O-PCl2 oder P(OR7)^, falls

ein Katalysator vorteilhaft, insbesondere ein basischer Katalysator, im Fall von Säurehalogeniden z.B. eine organische
Stickstoffbase, wie Pyridin oder Triäthylamin, und im Fall von Estern starke Basen, wie Metallalkoholate, z.B. Kaliumtert.-butylat,
oder Lithiumamid oder dergl.. Erwärmen während
der Reaktion ist vorteilhaft, im Fall von Säurehalogeniden schwaches Erwärmen, im Fall von Estern stärkeres Erwärmen,
wie Rückflusstemperatur eines verwendeten Lösungsmittels, wie eines aprotischen Lösungsmittels, wie ein Aether, z.B.

Tetrahydrofuran oder Dioxan, oder ein Kohlenwasserstoff, wie
Toluol oder Xylol. Der basische Katalysator kann auch mit Vor teil in äquimolaren Mengen verwendet werden, um im Fall von
SMurehalogeniden den Halogenwasserstoff zu binden. Verwendet
man Ester, wie Phenylester, als Ausgangsmaterial, so kann man auch den entstehenden Alkohol, z.B. Phenol, abdestillie-
ren, gegebenenfalls so lange, bis kein Destillat mehr über geht, wobei Temperaturen von etwa 160-250° geeignet sind.
Die Phenole der Formel II sind bekannt, z.B. aus dem US-Patent
3,506,716. Ebenso sind die Säuren Y(OH)2 und deren reaktionsfähige
Derivate bekannt.
Gemäss der vorliegenden Erfindung können die Verbindungen
der Formel I als Stabilisatoren für organische Substrate ver wendet werden. Als Substrate kommen insbesondere Polymere in
Frage, die sich von einfach oder doppelt ungesättigten Kohlenwasserstoffen
ableiten, wie Polyolefine, z.B. Polyäthylen, das gegebenenfalls vernetzt sein kann, Polypropylen, Polyisobutylen,
Polymethylbuten-1, Polymethylpenten-1, Polybuten-1,
Polyisopren, Polybutadien, Polystyrol, Polyisobutylen, Co polymere der den genannten Homopolymeren zugrundeliegenden
Monomeren, wie Aethylen-Propylen-Copolymere, Propylen-Buten-1-Copolymere,
Propylen-Isobutylen-Copolymere, Styrol-Butadien-Copolymere, sowie Terpolymere von Aethylen und Propylen mit
einem Dien, wie z.B. Hexadien, Dicyclopentadien oder Aethylidennorbornen;
Mischungen der oben genannten Homo-polymeren, wie beispielsweise Gemische von Polypropylen und Polyäthylen,
Polypropylen und Poly-buten-1, Polypropylen und Polyisobutylen,
Geeignet sind auch Polymere, die Doppelbindungen enthalten:

aus Styrol-Copolymeren und einem andern Polymeren wie z.B. einem Polyacrylat, einem Dien-Polymeren oder einem
Aethylen-Propyplen-Dien-Terpolymeren; sowie Block-Copolyrr.ere
des Styrols wie z.B. Styrol-Butadien-Styrol, Styrol-Isopren-Styrol
oder Styrol-Aethylen/Butylen-Styrol.
Pfropfcopolymere von Styrol, wie z.B. Styrol auf Polybutadien, Styrol und Acrylnitril auf Polybutadien, sowie deren Mischungen
mit den unter zuvor genannten Copolymeren, wie sie als sogenannte ABS-Polymere bekannt sind.
Geeignet sind ferner auch OeIe, wie Schmieröle und hydraulische
Flüssigkeiten.

Die Verbindungen der Formel I werden den Substraten im allgemeinen
in einer Konzentration von 0,01 bis 5 Gew.-%, berechnet auf das zu stabilisierende Material, einverbleibt. Vorzugsweise
werden 0,05 bis 2,0,besonders bevorzugt 0,1 bis 1,0 Gew.-% der Verbindungen, berechnet auf das zu stabilisierende
Material, in dieses eingearbeitet. Die Einarbeitung kann beispielsweise durch Einmischen mindestens einer der Verbindungen
der Formel I und gegebenenfalls weiterer Additive nach den in der Technik üblichen Methoden, vor oder während
der Formgebung, oder auch durch Aufbringen der gelösten oder

dispergierten Verbindungen auf das Polymere, gegebenenfalls
unter nachträglichen Verdunsten des Lösungsmittels, vorgenommen
werden.
Im Falle von vernetztem Polyäthylen v;erden die Verbindungen
der Formel I zweckmässig vor der Vernetzung beigefügt. Die Verbindungen der Formel I können auch vor oder wahrend der
Polymerisation zugegeben v/erden.
Als weitere Additive, mit denen zusammen die erfindungsgemäs-
sen Stabilisatoren eingesetzt werden können, sind zu nennen: Antioxydantien, UV-Absorber, Lichtschutzmittel, Phosphite,
peroxidzerstörende Verbindungen, basische Costabilisatoren, Nukleierungsmittel und sonstige übliche Zusätze.
Die Erfindung wird in den folgenden Beispielen näher erläu
tert. Prozente (%) bedeuten darin Gewichtsprozente und Teile Gewichtsteile. Die Temperaturen sind in Celsiusgraden angegeben.

4,5 Teile (0,0067 Mol) 1,l-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-S-rnethyl-S-n-octadecylthiopropan,
25 ml Toluol und 0,54 ml Pyridin werden vorgelegt. Unter Stickstoff-Spülung
tropft man während 20 Minuten 1,7 ml (0,0034 Mol) 20%ige Phosgenierung in Toluol zu. Dabei steigt die Temperatur
von 200C auf 200C. Man rührt 2 Stunden bei Raumtemperatur
entfernt anschliessend das Pyridinhydrochlorid durch Filtrieren, wäscht das Filtrat mit Wasser neutral, trocknet
die Toluolphase über Natriumsulfat und zieht das Toluol unter Vakuum ab. Es verbleibt das gewünschte Carbonat als ein amorpher
Rückstand vom Molekulargewicht 988.
Das Verfahren von Beispiel 1 wurde mit 32,5 Teile (0,057 Mol) l,l-bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-n-dodecylthiopropan,
80 ml absolutem Aether, 7,4 ml Pyridin und 4,5 Teile (0,046 Mol) Phosgen wiederholt. Man erhält das gewünschte
Carbonat als einen amorphen Rückstand vom Molekulargewicht 1210.
Aus 12,5 Teile (0,025 Mol) l,l-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-n-butylthiobutan,
40 ml absolutem Aether, 3,7 ml Pyridin und 2,3 Teile (0,023 Mol) Phosgen erhält man
beim Vorgehen analog Beispiel 1 das gewünschte Carbonat als weisses Pulver vom MG 877, das Gegenstand von Anspruch 7 ist.

13,15 Teile (0,025 Mol) 1,l-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiadodecan,
5,35 Teile (0,025 Mol) Diphenyl-carbonat und 0,1 Teile (etwa 0,01 Mol) frisch sublimiertes
Kalium-tert. -butoxid V7erden in ein Destillationsgefäss
gegeben. Die Mischung wird auf 12O0C unter vermindertem
Druck (etwa 27 mm Hg) erhitzt und bildet eine Schmelze. Die Temperatur wird langsam auf 2100C erhöht. Dabei destilliert
das Phenol in die Vorlage. Die Reaktion ist nach etwa 1 Stunde vollständig. Das feste Polycarbonat wird nach dem
Abkühlen aus Chloroform umkristallisiert zu 12,3 Teilen feiner Kristalle mit dem MG 2305.
15,8 Teile (0,03 Mol) l,l-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-raethyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiadodecan
und 3,8 Teile (0,048 Mol) trockenes Pyridin werden in einen Kolben mit Rührer, Thermometer, Kühler und Einlassrohr gegeben. Nach Zugabe von
100 Teilen wasserfreiem Aether bildet sich eine Lösung, in die langsam Phosgen bei 35-400C eingeleitet wird, bis 2,4
Teile (0,024 Mol) absorbiert sind. Die Reaktionsmischung wird 16 Stunden bei Raumtemperatur unter einer Stickstoffatmosphäre
gerührt. Pyridin-hydrochlorid wird abfiltriert und der Aether abgedampft. Man erhält 14,1 Teile Rohprodukt,
das aus Wasser/Methanol (1:1) umkristallisiert und im Ofen
bei 700C getrocknet wird und 10,6 Teile des weissen, kristallinen,
gewünschten Polycarbonate vorn MG 737 ergibt.

Beispiel 6 *
Zu einer Lösung von 26,3 Teilen (0,05 Mol) 1,l-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiadodecan,
6,3 Teilen (0,08 Hol) wasserfreies Pyridin in 100 Teilen trockenem Aether gibt man tropfenweise 3 Volumenteile (0,04
Mol) Thionylchlorid bei exothermer Reaktion. Die Reaktionsmischung wird 4 Stunden unter massigem Rückfluss gerührt,
dann 16 Stunden bei 23CC stehen gelassen. Pyridin-hydrochlorid
wird abfiltriert und die organische Phase mehrmals mit Wasser gewaschen. Dann wird über Natriumsulfat getrocknet
und der Aether abgezogen. Man erhält ein gelbes OeI, das beim Stehen bei Zimmertemperatur kristallisiert. Umkristallisation
aus Methanol ergibt 18,5 Teile des gewünschten amorphen Polysulfits (MG 1845).
3 Volumenteile (0,04 Mol) Thionylchlorid werden tropfenweise zu einer Lösung von 19,1 Teilen (0,05 Mol) 1,l-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-n-butan
und 6,3 Teilen (0,08 Mol) Pyridin in 100 Volumenteilen trockenem Aether gegeben.
Die Reaktionsmischung wird 4 Stunden unter Stickstoff unter Rückfluss erhitzt. Dann wird abgekühlt und Pyridinhydrochlorid
sorgfältig abfiltriert. Aufarbeitung gemäss Beispiel 6 ergibt ein viskoses OeI, das über Nacht bei Raumtemperatur
fest wird. Umkristallisation aus Methanol ergibt 9,4 Teile des gewünschten, weissen kristallinen Polysulfits :

Beispiel 8 **
13,15 Teile 0,025 Mol) l,l-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-roethyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiadodecan
und 3,2 Teile (0,04 Mol) Pyridin gelöst in 100 Volumenteilen trockenem Aether
werden tropfenweise mit 1,6 Volumenteilen (0,02 Mol) Thiophosgen versetzt. Die Reaktionsmischung v;ird 4 Stunden unter massigem
Rückfluss erhitzt. Dann wird abgekühlt und Pyridinabfiltriert. Nach Waschen mit Wasser wird die organische
Phase getrocknet und eingedampft. Man erhält 11,1 Teile des gewünschten Polythiocarbonate, das aus Methanol umkristallisiert
wird, MG 755.
Zu 9,55 Teilen (0,025 Mol) l,l-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl»phenyl)-butan
und 3,15 Teilen (0,04 Mol) Pyridin gelöst in 100 Volumenteilen Aether gibt man tropfenweise
1,6 Volumenteile (0,02 Mol) Thiophosgen. Die Reaktionsmisehung
wird 4 Stunden auf 36°C erhitzt, abgekühlt und analog Beispiel 8 aufgearbeitet zu 8,2 Teilen des gewünschten Polythiocarbonate,
MG 427.
13,15 Teile (0,025 Mol) 1,1-Bis- (3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiadodecan,
und 7,8 Teile (0,025 Mol) Triphenylphosphit werden mit ca. 0,1 Teile (etwa 0,01 Mol) frisch
sublimierten Kalium-tert.-butoxid unter Vakuum (1 mm Hg) innerhalb
von 2 Stunden auf 1800C erhitzt. Das Reaktionsgemisch
schmilzt bei ca. 900C. Danach lässt man abkühlen, und löst das
Produkt in Chloroform. Das Lösungsmittel wird abgedampft und man erhält 10,2 Teile Rohprodukt, das aus Methanol umkristallisiert
und im Ofen bei 40°C getrocknet wird. 8,0 Teile des weissen, kristallinen, gewünschten Polyphosphits wurden erhalten.

11,6 Teile (0,02 Mol), 1,1-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl^-hydroxy-ömethyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiahexadecan,
6.2 Teile (0,02 Mol) Triphenylphosphite und 0,1 Teile Kalium-tert.-butoxid werden
bei 180 C ( 18 mm Hg) 2 1/2 Stunden lang zusammengeschmolzen. Aufgearbeitet wird gemäss Beispiel 10. Man erhält 10.0 Teile
des weissen, kristallinen Polyphosphits.
Eine Mischung von 13,9 Teilen (0.025 Mol) 1,1-Bis-(3-tert rbutyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiatetradecan
und 7,8 Teilen (0,025 Mol) Triphenylphosphit, enthaltend eine katalytische Menge Kalium-tert.-butoxid (0,1 Mol), wird
3 1/2 Stunden auf 90 C erhitzt. Die Aufarbeitung geschieht gemäss
Beispiel 10. Man erhält 11,0 Teile eines niedrid schmelzenden Polyphosphits von MG 860.
23,5 Teile (0,05 Mol) 1,1-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methylphenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiaoctan
und 15,5 Teile (0,05 Mol) Triphenylphosphit enthaltend 0,2 Teile Kalium-tert.-butoxid
werden bei 180 C 4 Stunden zusammengeschmolzen. Aufgearbeitet
wird gemäss Beispiel 10. Man erhält 17,0 Teile des kristallinen Polyphosphits.
13.17 Teile (0,025 Mol) 1,1-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiadodecan
und 8,15 Teile (0,025 Mol) Triphenylphosphat werden in Gegenwart von 0.1 Teil
Kalium-tert.-butoxid zusammen auf 180 C 2 Stunden erhitzt.
Die feste Masse wird mit Chloroform gewaschen und getrocknet.
Man erhält 11,1 Teile des leicht verfärbten Polyphosphats.

13,5 Teile (0,025 Mol) 1,1-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiatetradecati
und 8,15 Teile Triphenylphosphat und 0,1 Teile Kalium-tert,-butoxid werden bei
90°C (16 mm Hg-Vakuum) 1 1/2 Stunden zusammen erhitzt. Die Temperatur wird langsam auf 130°C erhöht und dabei 2 Stunden
gerührt. Umkristallisieren des Produktes aus Chloroform ergibt 11,3 Teile des Polyphosphats als weissen, kristallinen Teststoff,
MG - 2,345.
10,5 Teile (0,02 Mol) 1,1-Bis- (3-tert.-butyl^-hydroxy-emethyl-phenyl^S-methyl^-thiadodecan,
3,2 Teile (0,01 Mol) Triphenylphosphat und 0,1 Teile Kalium-tert.-butoxid werden
bei etwa 175°C 2 1/2 Stunden zusammen erhitzt. Aufgearbeitet
wird gemäss Beispiel 14. Man erhält 7.2 Teile des Polyphosphats als pulverige Substanz.
Verschmelzen vcn 13,9 Teilen 1,1-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiatetradecan,
5,35 Teilen Diphenylcarbonat und 0,1 TeilenKalium-tert.-butoxid unter
Vakuum (20 mm Hg) bei 90°C 4 1/2 Stunden lang und Aufarbeiten gemäss Beispiel 14 ergibt 11,9 Teile des Polycarbonats als
weissen, kristallinen Teststoff. MG = 665.
Zu 13,9 Teilen (0,025 Mol) 1,1-Bis-(3-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-phenyl)-3-methyl-4-thiatetradecan,
gelöst in 150 Volumenteilen Aether, enthaltend 3,2 Volumenteile (0,04 Mol) Pyridin, werden tropfenweise 1,43 Volumenteile (0,02 Mol)
Trionylchlorid bei 24 C zugegeben. Die Reaktionsmischung
wird 4 Stunden unter Rückfluss erhitzt. Aufgearbeitet wird gemäss Beispiel 6. Man erhält 9,1 Teile des weissen, kristal-

100 Teile Polypropylen (Schnelzincl^x 3,2 g/10 Min., 230°/
2160 g) werden in einem Schüttelapparat mit 0,2 Teilen eines in der nachstehenden Tabelle I aufgeführten Stabilisators
10 Minuten intensiv durchmischt. Das erhaltene Gemisch wird in einem Brabender-Plastographen bei 200° 10 Minuten geknetet,
die derart erhaltene Masse anschliessend in einer Plattenpresse
bei 260° Plattentemperatur zu 1 mm dicken Platten gepresst, aus denen Streifen von 1 cm Breite und 17 cm Länge
gestanzt werden.
Die Prüfung auf Wirksamkeit der den Prüfstreifen zugesetzten Additive wird durch Hitzealterung in einem Umluftofen bei
135° und 149° vorgenommen, wobei als Vergleich ein additivfreier Prüfstreifen dient. Dazu werden von jeder Formulierung
3 Prüfstreifen eingesetzt. Als Endpunkt wird die beginnende, leicht sichtbare Zerbröckelung des PrüfStreifens definiert.
