Allen diesen Anlagen ist gemein dass sie über einen oder mehrere Tank(s) verfügen, der das zur Reinigung verwendete Reinigungsmedium aufnimmt. In diesem Tank lagern sich mit zunehmender Benutzungsdauer immer mehr Verschmutzungen der abgereinigten Gegenstände ab. Die Folge daraus ist, dass die Reinigungsergebnisse im Laufe der Zeit immer schlechter werden.
