Description
Process for the preservation of nonionic, cosmetic and pharmaceutical Emulsions The invention relates to a method for preserving nonionic, cosmetic and pharmaceutical emulsions, such as ointment bases and the like in that alkyl esters of sorbic acid are used as preservatives.
It is known per se that phenolic preservatives such as the well-known p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters, also approved in the food industry largely by non-ionic emulsifiers of the polyoxyethylated fatty acid ester type be inactivated. Inactivation of the phenolic preservatives mentioned at the beginning but also occurs through other macromolecular compounds, such as polyethylene glycols, Polyvinyl pyrrolidone, methyl cellulose, gelatin, etc. It is therefore a problem the relevant technology, cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations with one Content of non-ionic emulsifiers or other macromolecular compounds permanent, safe and in the pH range above 7 against mold and bacterial attack to protect. In food technology, they are still often used as preservatives The sorbic acid used is in the presence of macromolecular or nonionic emulsifiers only effective in the acidic range, but it fails to preserve neutral ones and alkaline emulsions.
It was surprising and that is the invention that cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations, especially emulsions with the addition of 0.1 up to 1%, predominantly 0.3%, of alkyl esters of sorbic acid, also in neutral and alkaline acids Allow the pH range to be preserved.
The predominantly suitable ethyl, propyl and isopropyl esters the sorbic acid are prepared and according to processes known per se represent water-clear liquids with a pleasant, slightly fruity smell represents, which in no way precludes the use according to the invention.
