Description
Process for the preparation of condensation products from sulfonated β-naphthols, urea, formaldehyde and phenols It is known from German patents 687 066 and 701563 that tanning agents are obtained by condensation of sulfonated phenols with urea and formaldehyde and aftertreatment of the condensates with phenols and formaldehyde. In the first process stage, 0.4 to 0.5 mol of urea and 0.6 to 1 mol of formaldehyde are applied to 1 mol of a sulfonated phenol. Leathers made with these tanning agents have a light color with considerable lightfastness. If, on the other hand, one starts from sulfonated β-naphthols and the stated molar amounts of urea and formaldehyde, the condensation products obtained give leather of a darker color, which deepens even further under the action of light.
It has now been found, surprisingly, that one can follow the above-mentioned Process when using sulfonated ß-naphthols, light-colored, lightfast condensation products obtained if one mole of a sulfonated ß for the first stage of the process Naphthol or ß-naphthol mixture 0.7 to 1.7 mol of urea and 1.2 to 3.0 mol Formaldehyde used. It is particularly advantageous to use urea and formaldehyde not in free form, but in the form of their water-soluble condensates, such as dimethyl urea, Trimethylolurea and methylenebis-methylolurea, to be used if their Composition corresponds to the above proportions; the condensates can also be partially etherified with low molecular weight alkyl radicals, as z. B. the dimethoxymethyl-methylolurea and butoxymethyl-dimethylolurea Case is. As ß-naphthols, used individually or in the form of technical mixtures be z. B. the ß-naphthol itself and alkylated ß-naphthols, such as methyl and isopropyl-ß-naphthol. The condensation of sulfonated naphthols with Urea and formaldehyde or their condensation products are preferably carried out in a strongly acidic solution. The reaction temperature can be between 20 and 80 ° C to get voted.
The condensates obtainable in this way are used in the second process stage aftertreated in a manner known per se with phenols and formaldehyde. As examples suitable phenols are: Mononuclear monohydric phenols, such as halophenols and especially cresols and the phenol itself, bisphenals such as dihydroxydiphenylpropane and dihydroxydiphenylsulfone, condensed ring-containing phenols, such as in particular ß-naphthol, sulfonation and sulfomethylation products of the phenols mentioned, polyvalent phenols such as catechol, resorcinol and their homologues, and alkoxyphenols, such as methyl, ethyl and propyl catechol. The phenols can be pure or as technical mixtures, such as pyrogen oil, are present.
Instead of the phenols mentioned, low molecular weight reaction products can also be used use those obtained from such phenols and formaldehyde in weakly acidic solution are; these reaction products also contain phenolic hydroxyl groups.
The formaldehyde is given either in free form, preferably as aqueous solution, or in the form of substances too, under the reaction conditions Release formaldehyde, such as paraformaldehyde and trioxymethylene. Another, in many In some cases, it is particularly advantageous to carry out the second process stage consists in adding phenols and formaldehyde in an alkaline medium the known resin oils precondensed and these resin oils with the products of the first Process stage implements. The phenol itself and the Cresols.
The proportions between the in the first process stage obtained condensates on the one hand and phenols and formaldehyde on the other hand can be varied over a wide range. Usually good results are obtained if one mole of the sulfonated naphthols built into the condensates 0.1 to 2 moles, preferably 0.1 to 0.8 moles, of phenols and 0.1 to 2 moles, preferably 0.1 to 0.8 moles, formaldehyde used. One leads the Aftercare preferably in a strongly acidic solution between 20 and 80 ° C.
The condensation products obtained in this way are pronounced replacement tanning agents. They can be adapted to the requirements of the tanning process in a known manner with inorganic or organic acids. When added in vegetable tanning, they give the leather a lighter leather color and better body than the condensation products obtained according to German patents 687 066 and 701563. In addition, they have a particularly strong phlobaphenolytic effect and cause faster tanning and better utilization of the broth. They can be used like vegetable tanning agents and can replace them at any stage of vegetable tanning.
The new condensation products show a high percentage favorable ratio of tanning to non-tanning materials. They are temperature resistant and can be stored indefinitely and can be stored without reducing their valuable properties by known drying processes, such as evaporation in a vacuum or roller or spray drying, convert to solid form. The drying of the products is preferably carried out after them Neutralization with alkaline agents such as ammonia or caustic soda is carried out. The powders obtained can then be mixed with solid acids or acid donors, e.g. B. Sodium bisulfate, Adipic acid or oxalic acid, to be adjusted to the desired pH. the powdery tannins are easily and clearly soluble in cold water and possess the same valuable properties as the liquid products.
In addition to being used as tannins, the condensation products can also be valuable Auxiliaries can be used in dyeing. They are also excellent dispersants. They can be used in the same way as they are made during production, in liquid or solid form Use form. By adding acidic or alkaline substances you can find out their properties adapt to the needs of consumers.
