Abstract
Devices for keeping bees at elevated locations are disclosed, which consist of a novel construction consisting of a suspended or attachable superstructure and a substructure that can be placed over the nest from below and which covers all or a large part of the housing volume. By using particularly light and well heat-insulating materials for the substructure and by means of fastening options on the superstructure that are easy to use by hand, these devices in their various embodiments offer the possibility of treating the bee colony from below and from all sides by removing the respective substructure. Viewing the honeycombs of the bee colony after the substructure has been removed can be made much easier by the swiveling ability of the honeycomb-supporting strips attached to the superstructure. By observing the bee spacing in the embodiments, by sloping the walls of the substructure in most embodiments and also by combining them with honeycomb-bearing frames in individual embodiments, the attachment of the honeycombs hanging on the superstructure to the substructure is largely avoided. This ensures that the substructure can be permanently removed as the bee colony develops. The innovative constructions of bee houses restore the bees' natural habitat in trees and create new possibilities for beekeeping in urban areas.
Description
Stand der TechnikState of the art
The World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting, Routledge, New York, London). Bewegliche Trageleisten und die Tatsache, dass Waben an seitliche schräge Wände nicht angebaut werden, waren schon im Altertum bekannt (Pechhacker, 2003, S. 16).Honey bees are naturally forest dwellers and mainly colonize hollow trees (e.g. Arndt I and Tautz J, 2020, Honey Bees, Mysterious Forest Dwellers, Knesebeck, Munich), but these hardly exist anymore in most areas due to intensive management. Honey bees are kept by humans in a variety of different hives (housings for beekeeping). This can be explained, at least in part, historically, as a variety of dwellings were developed in the transition from honey hunting to historical hive forms to modern beekeeping and in different countries. Initially, bee trees or other natural locations were claimed as property (“Zeidlerei” in German-speaking countries) (Crane E, 1999, The World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting, Routledge, New York, London). The transition to beekeeping took place with the log hive, a hollow section of tree, some with separate and resealable openings, which was not tied to a fixed location and could be set up anywhere. But log hives are also used lying down and then correspond to tunnel hives, as they were and are used in warmer countries in the form of clay tubes (Hüsing JO and Nitschmann J, 1987, Lexikon der Bienenkunde, Edition Leipzig, reprinted by tosa p. 119, “Development of bee dwellings”). The straw or rod tips that are still used in some areas and traditionally today (especially in heather beekeeping, Lüneburg Heath) are also very simple, in which a straw mesh that is open at the bottom and rests on a flat base is used as a bee house. Pechhacker, for example, describes a summary of the historical and modern development of bee housing (Die Bienenkunde in Österreich, 2003, Denisia 8, 15-45; https://www.zobodat.at/pdf/DENISIA_0008_0015-0045.pdf). A decisive step in the development of hives was the discovery of the bee space (“bee space”, by Langstroth 1851) of 8+/-2 mm, which is kept clear as a passage for bees and is not obstructed. This corresponds to a honeycomb alley, i.e. the free space between two freely constructed honeycombs. At the same time, Langstroth and Berlepsch invented movable frames and corresponding magazines (Pechhacker (2003), also trapezoidal frames, suitable for sloping walls, are mentioned here). Movable support strips and the fact that honeycombs are not attached to sloping walls were already known in ancient times (Pechhacker, 2003, p. 16).
For a long time, rear treatment hives were the predominant form of magazines with movable frames, they were often grouped together in apiaries at locations and were the predominant form of beekeeping (Pechhacker, 2003). However, they had difficulties in handling both in transverse construction (warm construction) and in longitudinal construction (cold construction) (e.g. Lampeitl F, 2012, Keeping Bees, Ulmer Verlag, Stuttgart (Hohenheim)). Rear treatment hives have become less important due to the introduction of (top treatment) magazines, but are still used.
Deutsch Normal, Zander, Langstroth, Dadant, Kuntzsch, Neu-Württemberger) (Lampeitl, 2012).Today bees are mainly kept in magazine hives. The magazine is a “top treatment hive that consists of loose parts, base, frames, lid and the size of which can be adjusted to the respective requirements by stacking several frames one on top of the other.” (Hüsing and Nitschmann, 1987). In addition to the upper treatment, magazines have the option of tilt control. This is done from behind, i.e. from the side facing away from the entrance hole. The frames must be hung lengthways so that the bees cannot be crushed. In relation to the entrance hole and good ventilation, this is also known as cold construction. Magazine hives exist in a variety of shapes and sizes and variants, which often predominate regionally (including Deutsch Normal, Zander, Langstroth, Dadant, Kuntzsch, Neu-Württemberger) (Lampeitl, 2012).
Magazine hives also exist in versions with rigid foam Styrofoam, the best known of which is the Segeberger hive. The material offers advantages in terms of thermal insulation and the low weight of the frames, but also disadvantages such as early breeding in spring and heavy condensation formation.
Trough hives usually have sloping walls. If the angle of the sides of the trough corresponds approximately to the angle that the tongue-shaped natural honeycombs form on the sides, the bee colony does not build the honeycombs on the sides. Such lateral connections would be very disruptive when handling the movable honeycombs and when harvesting honey. Side mounting is only tolerated or desired in small frames, as these are still at a bee's distance from the magazine wall. An ideal angle of 58.5° is cited for sloping side walls (e.g. Günter Friedmann, 2017, Beekeepers According to Bees - The Practical Handbook, BLV, Munich, p. 49). Bees do not build honeycombs, especially brood combs, downwards, obviously to avoid the rise of pests or moisture. Trough hives often have movable bars (“top-bar-beehive”) and are hives with top treatment.
In Central Europe, trough hives are usually set up; In other countries, especially African ones, they are also hung up, like log hives. The hanging of the trough hives primarily serves to protect against ants and allows for top treatment (Hüsing and Nitschmann, 1987, p. 119, “Development of bee dwellings”).
The most comprehensive and global account of bee use and keeping is probably Crane (1999).
Many recent inventions in beekeeping are aimed at improved manageability and increased cost-effectiveness and regularly take into account the control of the Varroa mite.

However, very few registrations refer to more natural, species-appropriate housing conditions.
The Lives Of Bees - The Untold Story of the Honey Bee in the Wild, Princeton University Press, Princeton and Oxford).More recently, and often in connection with the susceptibility to Varroa mites, arguments have been put forward for more species-appropriate beekeeping that is closer to the natural way of life. In addition to more natural locations (far above the ground, lower density of bee colonies), better thermal insulation, small entrance holes and rougher inner walls of the bee houses are mentioned, which are said to lead to changed behavior with increased cleaning behavior (Friedmann G, 2017, Beekeeping according to bees - The practical manual , BLV, Munich; Seeley TD, 2019, The Lives Of Bees - The Untold Story of the Honey Bee in the Wild, Princeton University Press, Princeton and Oxford).
The older literature still lists volumes of 200 liters for bee housing preferred by the bees (Hüsing and Nitschmann, 1987, keyword “hunting for housing”), while the more recent literature cites 20-40 liters for natural and species-appropriate beekeeping or 20-60 liters for natural beekeeping (Wermelinger A and Hörler E, 2020, A plea for conscious honey beekeeping through diversification and adjustment of intensity, bees currently 10, 15-21) or 47 liters for natural tree hollows in North America (Seeley, 2019, p 105).
Aufgabe der ErfindungTask of the invention
The object of the invention was to enable keeping bees, which initially seemed very impractical, in elevated positions such as in trees, as corresponds to their natural habitat, while maintaining good beekeeping manageability. Modern achievements such as movable honeycomb construction as well as the monitoring of Varroa infestation and its simple treatment should be retained and integrated. In addition to this redevelopment of the natural habitat in trees, locations equivalent to beekeeping in urban environments should also be developed, such as beekeeping under overhangs on buildings (roof overhangs, terrace superstructures, ceilings over balconies).
Lösung des Problemsthe solution of the problem
The problem of handling bee houses at elevated locations was solved by making it possible to treat the bee colony from below using special constructions. This was achieved by the fact that the hive space in the form of special substructures can be placed over the honeycomb structure and the bee colony from below. This substructure has preferred shapes, preferred distances in relation to the superstructure, and a low weight, so that the substructure is not grown by the bees and it can also be easily removed and reattached by hand. It therefore consists of a flat superstructure, or only a small part of the housing volume, which supports the honeycombs and the removable substructure. The entire device can be firmly attached to elevated positions and inspected and handled precisely in these, or lowered from very high positions on ropes and then handled in this position from below and from all sides (claims 1, 2). The elements supporting the honeycomb are either strips (for natural honeycomb construction) or frames and are each removable, i.e. “movable” according to beekeeping terminology (claim 3, depending on 1, 2). However, it is very advantageous to hang the strips at one end (fixed or removable) in a rotatable manner, for example by screwing them, and only secure them with a hook at the other end so that after the substructure has been removed, the individual strips with the honeycombs can be viewed People to be able to swing away laterally (claim 4).
In the simplest embodiment, the superstructure consists of a plate which supports the movable honeycomb structure underneath. The problem of movable, honeycomb-bearing strips or frames was solved with the help of hooks embedded in the plate, under which the strips or the top strip of the frames can be clamped or hung (claim 3). Alternatively, the strips are screwed to the superstructure at one end and can therefore be swiveled to the side so that people can see through them (claim 4).
For the function of such a “under-treatment hive”, which at the same time represents an embodiment of an under-treatment hive, there are essentially four specifications for the design. (1) A low weight so that the substructure can be easily removed from the hanging device by hand. In addition to a certain limitation in overall size, this requires the use of a very well heat-insulating and light material such as cork, Styrofoam (or other rigid foams), woven straw (or similar plant material such as jute), felt, cardboard or plastic material with air chambers enables the construction of walls that are as thin as possible with sufficient thermal insulation in the substructure (claims 5, 7, 8). The same is favorable for versions with transparent material (claim 9). (2) A sloping wall inclination, which helps to avoid the attachment of the honeycomb structure hanging on the superstructure to the removable substructure (claims 10, 11), or a design as a box with the use of frames on the superstructure, which also fulfill this purpose (claim 12). (3) Maintaining a bee distance of approximately 8+/-2 mm between the movable slats or frames hanging on the superstructure (claim 3) and to the walls of the substructure placed underneath (claim 5), thereby preventing wildlife or . Cultivation is avoided. (4) The substructure should be easy to remove by hand; for this purpose, it must be able to be easily and reversibly attached mechanically to the superstructure (claim 5).
Daher eignen sich diese Ausführungsformen besonders für den Naturwabenbau, obwohl auch eine Kombination mit dreieckigen oder trapezförmigen Rähmchen für den Wabenbau möglich ist (Ansprüche 10, 11).Embodiments of the removable substructure have either the shape of a trough (claim 10) or that of a pyramid or a truncated pyramid (claim 11). In the case of the trough, the side walls preferably have an inclination that corresponds to or comes close to the lateral angle of natural honeycombs and thus prevents their attachment and thus ensures that the substructure can be permanently removed. In the case of the pyramid or a truncated pyramid, all the walls have such an inclination. Therefore, these embodiments are particularly suitable for natural honeycomb construction, although a combination with triangular or trapezoidal frames for honeycomb construction is also possible (claims 10, 11).
An embodiment with a cuboid base, on the other hand, is better suited for a combination with frames, as the side walls of the frames prevent cultivation and between On the outside of the frame and the cuboid side wall, only the bee distance is maintained, which prevents wild building or cultivation (claim 12).
All embodiments of the substructure in which the surface that is open at the top has a rectangular shape have the important advantage that the strips or frames included in the substructure are all the same length and are therefore interchangeable with one another.
If an embodiment is chosen in which the substructure has a square surface open to the superstructure and has the same wall inclination on all sides (square pyramid or square truncated pyramid or cuboid with a square upper surface), the substructure can be attached differently in its orientation to the honeycomb-supporting superstructure. By rotating the suspension of the superstructure by 90° relative to the substructure with its entrance hole oriented in the same area, a change between cold construction (longitudinal construction) and warm construction (transverse construction) is possible, for example during the change of season.
By rotating the suspension of the superstructure by 180° (again in such embodiments with a square open-top surface and the same wall inclination on all sides) against the substructure with its entrance hole oriented in the same area, analogous to the classic rotating hull method (Hüsing and Nitschmann, 1987, p. 118, “Development of bee dwellings”), a honey harvest is possible at the turn of the year in the other half of the entire honeycomb structure.
This also applies to the version with a conical substructure, which can even be freely oriented with its entrance hole relative to the superstructure with the strips or frames due to its rotational symmetry (claim 14).
(Anspruch 15).Devices for feeding the bees can be easily integrated into the new device for beekeeping, for example by means of a U-shaped hollow device that works on the principle of communicating tubes, with an ascending leg attached inside the substructure which is open at the top and the bees is therefore accessible, a rising leg attached to the outside of the substructure, which leads to a food storage container which can be refilled from the outside, and a connecting hose which connects both legs to one another and is preferably guided through a basal opening in the substructure; or, for example, by a feeding device that works with a closable opening in the superstructure of the device through which feed can be fed from above. (Claim 15).
The inventive combination of a new sub-treatment hive and a very light and manually removable substructure opens up the natural habitat of the honey bee for beekeeping beyond the use of tree hollows and log hives, as well as new habitat in urban environments (roofs over terraces and balconies, roof overhangs). The disturbance to people caused by arriving and departing bees is also greatly reduced by the elevated position of the device, its entrance hole and thus the flight path.
The superstructure also protects the substructure, which is sensitive due to its lightweight construction, from some of the weather. This is particularly important for versions with cork, felt or cardboard. Due to its position, the entire device is largely inaccessible to bee pests such as ants and mice.

Beispiel 1example 1
Ropes were attached to the four eyelets on the top of the plate that served as the superstructure, with which the device was pulled up to a height of three meters on a branch of a tree, secured against swinging and rotation, and could also be lowered again.
A swarm was quartered in this suspended device. As intended, the substructure was easy to handle after being lowered on the rope from the high position in the tree for inspection, mite treatment and honey harvesting. Over the course of the year, the bee colony built a regularly shaped natural honeycomb structure with tongue-shaped honeycombs on all ledges; the substructure was not added. The honeycombs could be removed and reattached individually for inspection and honey harvesting. The colony was able to successfully overwinter in the dwelling.
Beispiel 2Example 2
To attach the strips, they were each loosely screwed at one end so that they remained pivotable to the side. A 20 mm washer was inserted between the screw head and the strip to avoid sagging when the honeycomb-bearing strips were swiveled. The other end of the strips was clamped under hooks that were attached behind the end of the strips in such a way that the notched strips hooked into them can be unhooked and swiveled on either side.
As a feeding device, a plastic tube that was open at the top was attached to the inner edge of the pyramid (opening at a height of 20 cm, calculated vertically from the top of the pyramid), which was connected to a 10 mm hose at the bottom. This tube was led down along the inner edge of the pyramid and led 5 cm outward through an opening in the top of the pyramid. This end of the hose can be connected to another end of the hose through a hose connector for feeding; This second hose leads outside the substructure to the lower end of a 2.5 L feed container, which can be hung on the superstructure next to the substructure and filled with sugar syrup from above. A small mark was placed on the outside of the substructure at the level of the upper opening of the internal tube to allow filling of the communicating vessels without overflowing the internal system.
Ropes were attached to the four eyelets on the top of the plate that served as the superstructure, with which the device was pulled up to a height of three meters on a branch of a fruit tree, secured against swinging and rotation, and could also be lowered again.
