Nest box for bumblebees, made of prefabricated components made of Hartpor ®EPS with the dimensions 30x30x45 cm,
characterized,
that
the nest box is suitable due to its construction to offer nest-seeking bumblebee queens a suitable nesting place for the purpose of founding a new colony.
Description
Nesting boxes for bumblebees have been around for many years in a wide variety of designs. Most of these are made of wood.
In summer, however, heat builds up very quickly in wooden nesting boxes that are set up above ground.
If the temperature in the interior then rises above 40 °C, the nesting colony of bumblebees is in a very life-threatening situation.
The bumblebees then try to transport fresh air into the nest box by waving their wings, but this usually fails due to the closed construction of these wooden boxes. In addition, wooden nesting boxes often only have a relatively short lifespan, as they are exposed to all kinds of outdoor weather influences over the years.
Moisture in the box, caused by the bumblebee nest, and these external weather conditions often make such a wooden nesting box unattractive for insect lovers, especially bumblebee lovers.
Wooden boxes that are getting on in years also have to be painstakingly restored by means of constant coats of paint.
In most cases, the weathering of the wood also leads to the leaking of the nest boxes, so that the dreaded enemies of the bumblebees, the wax moths, are wide open.
In almost all cases, an unnoticed washing moth infestation leads to the total loss of the entire bumblebee nest.
After many practical tests with different nest box types and materials, I came to the conclusion to design a nest box that combines the advantages of both types of construction (wood and Hartpor ®EPS) and eliminates the negative characteristics of wooden boxes.
The development of my nesting boxes therefore aims to eliminate the disadvantages mentioned above through the use of wooden nesting boxes for bumblebees.
This goal is achieved by using the material Hartpor ®EPS, an expanded polystyrene hard foam, for the construction of the bumblebee nesting boxes.
The bumblebee nesting boxes are extremely handy due to the material, easy to transport and individually expandable.
The good heat storage capacity of the material used makes it easier for the bumblebee queens to build a strong bumblebee nest, especially during the often cold weather periods during the nest foundation phase in early spring.
- → food-safe, tested according to the food regulation,
- → closed cell structure,
- → Consistently good thermal insulation, approx. 20% better than wood, supports the nest climate in the nest box,
- → non-warping, impact-resistant and durable,
- → smooth and solid surface, therefore easy cleaning after the season,
- → Processing of high-quality, non-rusting components such as stainless steel V4A and aluminium,
- → light and at the same time very stable,
- → heat-insulating and water-repellent,
- → rot-proof,
- → can, however, be recycled up to seven times from an ecological point of view,
- → Resistant to UV exposure thanks to individually selectable coloring using biocide-free paint application
If you look at the incubators of honey bees, you will find that beekeepers are using polystyrene boxes more and more often and that the old wooden boxes are becoming more and more obsolete.

Auszüge aus einem Praxis-Bericht von Geert Staemmler, Imkermeister, Im Holt 38g, 23812 Wahlstedt:
- Was ist Hartpoi® EPS?
- “... Natural insulating and building materials have been used in beekeeping for ages, just think of straw, moss, clay and the like. Straw is indeed the best "material" for building hives (internal climate, value for money of the material), but they are very time-consuming to build (expensive) and exposed to mechanical influences (e.g. mice, woodpeckers) just as defenseless as, for example, Styrofoam. Lifespan is just sufficient if the hives are specially protected from weathering (bee houses, etc.). Mosses and other fibrous fillers have not proven themselves because they usually absorb moisture and the insulating effect is gone. Clay is too heavy and too sensitive to the weather for hive construction.
- Like straw, wood has been used as a building material in beekeeping in Europe for centuries - with all its advantages and disadvantages, such as universal processing, renewable raw material or the relatively high weight (compared to Styrofoam and straw). It must be protected from weathering with wood preservatives or with relatively great effort (cow manure in basket beekeeping, apiaries, free stands, etc.). According to experience, wooden hives are too damp inside in wet and cold weather conditions if the colonies are not very strong...
- What is Hartpoi® EPS?
- It is expanded polystyrene - rigid foam. The starting materials are styrene and pentane, from which expandable polystyrene is produced through polymerisation in closed systems. The plastic used is expanded to about 50 times its volume; this results in a very low weight.
- The actual foam production takes place in a simple process in which the polystyrene granules containing the blowing agent are heated with steam and foamed by the blowing agent to form closed-cell particles (the polystyrene balls containing a lot of air).
- Styrofoam is therefore a biologically neutral product from which no negative effects on living organisms are to be expected.
- Decades of use of Styrofoam in agriculture, medicine, food packaging and more than 40 years of use in bee housing is a testament to this.
- Styrofoam is chemically neutral, neither water-soluble nor does it emit water-soluble substances. Pentane as a blowing agent for Styrofoam is not one of the greenhouse gases because it only has a half-life of 10-15 hours and only 0.000009% can be detected in the atmosphere.
- Styrofoam is easy to recycle because, as polystyrene, it is chemically and physically stable. The used styrofoam is ground in mills to a certain particle size and then processed for diverse reuse in construction (plaster, lightweight concrete, clay bricks, etc.), as a soil conditioner in agriculture and horticulture or back into polystyrene granules. Last but not least, Styrofoam can be burned very well in suitable plants and energy can thus be recovered without the formation of dioxins. The calorific value of polystyrene is 11 kWh/kg and can therefore be easily burned for so-called support firing in waste incineration plants and thus save oil.
- According to Regulation (EC) 1804/99 and Regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91 on organic farming: "... beehives must consist mainly of natural materials that cannot contaminate the environment or the apiary products." ... hives made of this building material are durable with minimal maintenance, light and "livable" for the bees. Styrofoam is widely recognized in hive construction because of its cost-effective production and universal deformability. Beehives made of this material keep warm and are warmer than wooden magazines during the transitional period.
Each nesting box consists of a base part (prefabricated component), which is firmly closed at the bottom with an aluminum grid.
This protects against the entry of eg voles into the nest box.
At the same time, the construction, which is open at the bottom, also contributes to an exchange of air in the nest box, which in turn is extremely important for regulating the nest climate in the actual nest box.
The bottom part of the nesting box is firmly screwed to this floor part (prefabricated component).
It serves to accommodate the bumblebee's nest.
A precisely fitted cardboard box accommodates the bumble bee colony and at the same time absorbs the resulting nest moisture.
An air conditioning attachment is attached to this lower part (prefabricated component).
This causes a kind of "chimney effect".
The breeding activity of bumblebees in the nest creates a lot of moisture, depending on the size of the bumblebee nest. Here, the climate attachment regulates the nest climate inside the box and directs the moisture to the outside.
For this purpose there are large holes in the upper third of the attachment on a total of 3 sides. These ventilation holes are sealed to the outside with a very close-meshed stainless steel wire mesh. This prevents the entry of wax moths, their larvae and other nest enemies.
In addition, tight-fitting aluminium nium ventilation grilles are installed, which offer the greatest possible protection against the effects of the weather, such as driving rain, and also ensure particularly good tightness against the effects of light.
The bumblebee nest thus remains well protected and dry.
A total of nine generous ventilation holes on three sides of the air-conditioning unit guarantee excellent air exchange.
In addition, the bottom of this attachment is closed with a stainless steel wire mesh so that the bumblebees cannot escape from the nest. A fleece cloth lies on top of this grid, which protects the bumblebees from possible night frosts in early spring.
The nesting box is tightly sealed on top with a cover (prefabricated component).
An extremely important component on the bumblebee nest box is the wax moth flap.
For this purpose, a 3D-printed stem made of filament is attached to the lower part of the nesting box.
After many trials with different flap constructions, the use of a wax moth flap on a slanted entrance block proved to be the best.
It prevents wax moths from gaining free access to the interior of the nest.
The cover of the porch can be removed, so that the bumblebees can be fed during periods of bad weather.
It is fixed using 4 embedded magnets.
This design is also used on my nest boxes.
- “Hemp bedding is obtained from the core of the hemp stalk. It optimally binds moisture and is also very low in dust, making it the ideal bedding for the bumblebee nesting boxes.
- Hemp litter (here HUGRO natural litter) is 100% natural litter from sustainable cultivation. The hemp plants used are not treated with pesticides. Hugro natural litter is obtained from the inner, spongy core of the hemp stalk and is also characterized by its good compostability, which means that it can be disposed of particularly conveniently in the organic waste bin or, if possible, in your own compost heap.
- Due to the special structure of the hemp, it is able to be particularly absorbent and bind unpleasant odors particularly well. In addition, it is particularly economical due to its high absorbency.
- According to the current European test guidelines (NF EN13041), HUGRO hemp litter also takes first place among common natural litters.
- HUGRO natural litter binds 1.5 times more liquid than linen litter and twice as much as wood shavings. This means that HUGRO natural litter takes first place in binding ammonia.
- Hugro natural litter is chopped and dust-cleaned several times and is suitable for all small animals thanks to its special cleaning process. It is also allergy-friendly because it is particularly dust-free.
- Hugro natural litter combines some of the most important properties that are important for high-quality small animal litter. ''

Außerdem gibt es erste Versuche mit Textilien aus Kapokfasern und viele Nagetiere (Meerschweinchen, Hamster, Mäuse etc.) lieben Kapokschoten als ungefährliches Knabberspielzeug.“Kapok is an ecologically sustainable raw material and has been used for over 100 years.
It used to be very popular as a filling for upholstered furniture. Today it is mainly used in natural bedding (mattresses, pillows, blankets).
It is also used as an insulating material and nesting material, for example in bumblebee nests.
There are also initial trials with textiles made from kapok fibers and many rodents (guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, etc.) love kapok pods as a harmless nibble toy.
und für die Verarbeitung sind keinerlei chemische Bearbeitungsprozesse notwendig.''Kapok comes from the Malay language (kapuk) and is also called plant down. It is the hollow fiber of the Ceiba pentandra (vulg. kapok tree). It is obtained from the long fibers of the kapok fruit of the tree, which incidentally grows in the tropics.
The kapok fiber itself is smooth, has a thin cell wall, and is transparent with a large volume.
The average length of the fiber is 19 mm. Because of the air inclusion of 80%, the kapok fiber is considered the lightest natural hollow textile fiber in the world after poplar down.
The fibers have a very high load-bearing capacity in water (up to 30 times their own weight).
Kapok pods: open pods with kapok fibers.
The kapok fiber is ecologically very interesting Raw material, since it is renewable. Most kapok trees are wild, meaning they are not grown in plantations or monocultures. That's why you don't need to use fertilizers or pesticides
and no chemical processing is required for processing.''
Producing such a nesting box from Hartpor ®EPS is quite complex due to the work processes described.
The use of prefabricated components has proven itself here, as it keeps both the budget and the time required manageable.
The use of high-quality materials such as stainless steel screws, stainless steel wire mesh, aluminum ventilation grilles and biocide-free paint ensure durability when used outdoors.
Based on the current state of knowledge, the use of Hartpor ®EPS appears to make sense from an ecological point of view.
The excellent properties of the material mentioned above also guarantee optimal support for the settlement, propagation and protection of bumblebees on the basis of the applicable legal provisions.
