Description
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for producing an endless wire of magnesium or magnesium alloy. Characteristic of the method is that a continuous melt flow between two counter-rotating, profiled rollers is poured, the melt flow in the profiling completely solidifies even before the narrowest point of the rollers and undergoes a transformation by rolling when passing through the narrowest point.
Methods which provide roll forming immediately upon solidification of a melt are known by the generic term "casting rolls".

S. 1, 17–20, 76–79, 90. Also of importance is the publication by M. Ferry, (Ferry, M .: Direct strip casting of metals and alloys, Cambridge: Woodhead Publishing Ltd., 2006 pp. 1, 17-20, 76-79, 90.-ISBN 1-84569-049-4) in which the basic suitability of magnesium alloys for strip casting (direct strip casting) is discussed. It is shown (page 20) that in the future procedures are expected to implement strip casting for certain magnesium alloys. However, casting rolls for pure magnesium are not mentioned. On page 77 (Group III), roll casting is referred to as a subclass of strip casting using moving molds (casting wheels).
The processes for producing aluminum wires by means of cast rolling are not readily transferable to the production of magnesium wires. Many magnesium alloys have a significantly shorter distance between melting and solidification point than aluminum alloys and a different lattice structure. Both properties lead to considerably more difficult processing in the processing of magnesium. This is exacerbated by the strong tendency to oxidation in a number of common magnesium alloys in the liquid state. Also methods for the production of sheets by casting rolling can not be readily transferred to wire production. Wire production is much more difficult to control because of the larger heat path during cooling than strip production. The different approaches have meant that there is little exchange between the specialist circles for long (wire) and flat products (sheets).
It is now the task of proposing a method and an apparatus for casting rolls of magnesium wires.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by the method according to
In the following, when magnesium is mentioned, it also includes its alloys which have at least 50% magnesium and are not unsuitable for wire production because of other properties.
The inventive method provides that a melt of magnesium between two counter-rotating casting wheels (also referred to as casting rolls) is poured. The casting wheels are cooled from the inside. They have on the outside at least one circumferential groove, which is referred to as caliber, but no flat tracks. The encircling calibers of the casting wheels correspond in pairs with each other by running on each other during the rotation of the wheels. One caliber each of the first (upper) casting wheel forms, together with the corresponding caliber of the second (lower) casting wheel, a casting mold into which the casting process takes place. Casting is accomplished from a liquid metal reservoir through a nozzle that produces a stream of metal (melt stream) that extends into the mold (formed from the two calibers). The cooled casting wheels remove heat from the metal beam so that it solidifies in its entire cross section. At the same time, the metal jet is fed by the counter-rotating wheels to the smallest distance of these wheels and rolled during this movement. After exiting the casting wheels, the rolled magnesium wire is cooled by at least one liquid inert gas. The metal beam is completely solidified before it reaches this smallest distance. Behind the casting wheels, the rolled wire may preferably be subjected to further processing steps or wound or assembled. Thus, the solidification and transformation of magnesium takes place in a single plant.
Die Zahl der Kaliber je Gießwalze liegt bevorzugt zwischen 25 und 1, besonders bevorzugt zwischen 18 und 1 und ganz besonders bevorzugt zwischen 12 und 1.Preferably, the casting wheels on several circumferential caliber (grooves), each caliber is associated with a nozzle through which liquid metal is poured into the caliber. The number of calibers per casting roll is preferably between 25 and 1, more preferably between 18 and 1 and most preferably between 12 and 1.
The nozzles are supplied from a common or from different containers with liquid metal. Preferably, all calibers of the casting wheels are supplied with metal. However, it is also possible to use only individual calibers for the primary forming and forming process, depending on the planned production volume. The cooling of the casting wheels is adapted to the actual parallel casting processes, so that the front of the metal solidification, which forms in the metal beam, in each of the parallel casting processes always runs in front of the narrowest point of the casting wheels.
The casting temperature is alloy-dependent preferably in the range between 670 ° C to 710 ° C; for the alloy AZ31 it is for example 690 ° C. All areas in the melt inlet with a free molten bath level must be continuously exposed to protective gas. The molten magnesium is passed through pouring nozzles in the caliber between the casting wheels. The pouring nozzles are preferably made of steel (temperature-resistant, low-expansion alloy) and are equipped with an electrically controlled additional heating. Alternatively, preferably all-ceramic pouring nozzles without additional heating are used. The condition is that the casting nozzle material is permanently resistant to the Mg melt. Further preferred is the use of a hybrid solution having a nozzle body made of steel with heating and a replaceable mouthpiece made of ceramic as wearing part.
The diameter of the rolls is preferably 600 mm to 900 mm. However, larger diameters are possible if the other parameters are adjusted accordingly. The mean specific pressure of the rolls is in the range of preferably 250 N / mm 2 to 450 N / mm 2 .
The control of the cooling process is about the speed (rotational speed) of the rotating cooled from the inside with coolant rollers possible. A low speed leads to a complete solidification over the entire cross section of the cast strand just before the nip outlet. For rolling then a relatively low rolling force is necessary. In contrast, a high speed leads to a solidification over the cross section, which is shifted in the direction of the nip outlet. In this situation, the cooled rollers work as a rotating mold and cause only the solidification, similar to the continuous casting, but not as a casting roll. A pronounced forming and forming force do not occur in this situation. Thus, there are multiple dependencies that include, for example, the rotational speed of the roller, the wire thickness, the cooling rate of the respective alloy, etc.
- – Position Oberwalze,
- – Niveau des Schmelzespiegels über Stichlinie (Passline),
- – Drahtgeometrie (optische Erfassung)
- Melt temperature in the feed channel to the pouring nozzle system and in the pouring nozzle,
- Nozzle and pouring trough temperature,
- - rolling force (recorded via the hydraulic adjusting pressure transducer in the adjusting cylinder or separate load cell),
- - speed of the rollers,
- Wire exit temperature and speed (optical detection),
- - position upper roll,
- Level of the melt level above the pass line,
- - wire geometry (optical detection)
- Level of the free melt level in the feed trough or head box above the passline (eg regulation of the feed pump speed in the case of melt feed from the casting furnace by means of a pump),
- Outlet cross-section (in the case of melt feed via plug outlet from higher-lying casting furnace),
- - pouring nozzle temperature,
- - Gutter trough temperature (control of heating),
- - cooling water inlet,
- - cooling water temperature via recooling (cooling tower),
- Position control of the upper roll in continuous wire geometry measurement (difficult in multi-strand casting, since a roll deflection may cause different effective caliber dimensions)
B. Graphit-in-Wasser-Suspension), In order to avoid buildup or to keep a defined deposit in the caliber constant, the use of release agents (eg graphite-in-water suspension) advantageously takes place,
The release agents are preferably applied by continuous spraying (inlet side). Preferably, brush systems for the mechanical cleaning of the caliber are used on the outlet side.
A particularly preferred procedure envisages shielding the metal jets against ingress of air when they enter the calibers with inert gas, preferably nitrogen or argon, if appropriate with admixture of SF 6 (sulfur hexafluoride). This procedure advantageously prevents undesirable oxidation processes and the adhesion of the melt to the tool.
The caliber pairs of a casting wheel pair preferably have identical dimensions. However, preference may also be given to casting wheel pairs which have pairs of caliber of different cross-sectional sizes and shapes. Thus, advantageously, different wire thicknesses can be produced at the same time. A control of the cooling process can be done here advantageously via the dosage of the addition of liquid nitrogen. In this way, small diameter less strong and larger diameter can be cooled more so that the solidification front runs continuously at all casting rolls before the narrowest point, without the material would have been too cold cooled.
The method according to the invention is suitable for producing wires in the diameter range of preferably 1 to 20 mm, particularly preferably 3 to 15 mm and very particularly preferably 5 to 15 mm. Preferably, the wires have a circular cross-section. Further preferred embodiments see n-angular cross-sections (n > 3, more preferably hexagonal or octagonal cross sections).
In a very particularly preferred embodiment of the caliber, the rolled wires have an oval (elliptical) cross-section, with the advantage of a smaller heat path compared to the round dimension. The height information then refers to the major axis of the oval. For the oval formation of the diameters of the wires, preference is given to using caliber casting wheels in which the gap between the casting wheels extends along the major axis.
The cooling of the casting wheels preferably takes place via the cooling channels, which run in the interior of the casting wheels. Preferably, the cooling channels extend between the roller core and the shrunk-on roll shell. The roll shell is preferably made of steel or a coated copper alloy. It is further preferred to work the cooling system directly into the roll core. As the coolant, water is preferably used and controlled the amount of coolant and its inlet temperature. The cooling channels are preferably arranged circumferentially parallel to the calibers in the material of the casting wheels.
A further preferred embodiment provides to cool the emerging wire strand with liquid nitrogen.
The wire produced in the manner according to the invention is characterized by a very fine crystalline forming structure. The rapid cooling with immediate rolling produces a very fine dispersion of intermetallic bubbles.
Advantageously, the proposed method makes it possible to produce virtually endless wires of magnesium or magnesium alloys. Magnesium alloys which are wrought alloys are preferably used. They preferably have up to 10% aluminum, up to 10% lithium, up to 3% zinc, up to 2% manganese, up to 1% zirconium, up to 1% cerium and possibly up to 5% further alloying elements (remainder bis 100% is magnesium).
When the container is continuously charged with liquid magnesium and the metal is kept in the liquid state, liquid melt can be continuously withdrawn and processed.
Due to the rapid phase transition from the liquid to the solid state and the immediately following roll forming, the wire thus produced in addition to the advantageous structure also has a very dense surface without damage. This is particularly achieved when the optional cooling of the exiting wire strand, preferably with liquid nitrogen occurs.
The suitable parameters for concrete alloys are preferably determined in preliminary experiments. Further preferably, the number of necessary preliminary tests is reduced by computer-aided mathematical simulations.
The method according to the invention makes it possible to feed the wire directly after leaving further processing stages in order to utilize the residual heat available for further process stages (rolling to smaller dimensions or pulling the wires). In addition, advantageous otherwise necessary intermediate processing and storage processes can thereby be eliminated. Advantageously, no further heating and cooling processes are necessary, as is necessary in prior art processes.
The process largely avoids waste or byproducts if the process is handled correctly, as all the cast material enters the final product.

The permanent automatic control of the furnace, pouring trough and pouring nozzle temperature is carried out by adjusting the burner output or the electric heating power with direct melt temperature measurement as a function of the manual setpoint specification.
Manual controls, which are mainly corrective interventions in the transient operating state (start-up, shut-down), concern the casting speed, the cooling water quantity, the quantity of lubricant / lubricant and the roller adjustment to influence the rolling forces / rolling moments and dimensions.
Throughout the casting process (as long as molten magnesium is exposed to environmental conditions), the melt is held under inert gas (nitrogen) to prevent oxygen access.
