The invention relates to the preparation of N-sulfoalkyl-substituted secondary, tertiary and quaternary amines of the aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic series. Sulfoalkyl G-groups are introduced where it is necessary to impart hydrophilic or anionic properties to organic compounds. Such requirements arise inter alia * in the synthesis of dyes, Textilhilfsmittein, drugs and pesticides.
Charakteristik der bekannten technischen Lösungen.Characteristic of the known technical solutions.
The simplest and currently still the most widely used method for introducing sulfoalkyl substituents is the reaction of amines with sultones, for example according to HELBERGER, Liebigs Ann. Chem. £ 65 (1949) 2. A major disadvantage of this reaction is that, in particular, the short-chain sultones, such as 1,3-propane sultan, show a strong mutagenic iaad carcinogenic effect (DRUCKHEY et al., Z, Erebsforsch, 75 (1970). 69). Sultones are mostly obtained by dehydrating cyclization from the corresponding hydroxyalkanesulfonic acids.
Photogr., Photophysik, Photochem.; 63. (1969) 149).Furthermore, sulfoalkyl-substituted amines can be obtained by reacting the corresponding .Amine with haloalkanesulfonic acids or their alkali salts, (see Summary of POPPE in Z. wiss Photogr., Photophysics, Photochem., 63. (1969) 149).
Stuttgart 1957).This process is limited by the fact that various haloalkanesulfonic acids are difficult to obtain or are obtained in sufficient purity by reacting sultones with alkali metal halides. Furthermore, it is known that 2-Hydroxyäthan- and 3 ~ Hydroxypropansulfοsäuren in aqueous solution and at elevated temperature (250 0 C) under pressure with ammonia or simple amines to the corresponding 2-Aminoäthansulfosäuren (taurines) or 3 ~ Aminopropansulfοsäuren can be implemented (DEP 593 968, Fri. 1_9, 498; DEP 612 994, Frdl. 20, 344; Methods of Organic Chemistry (HOüBEH-WEYl) Vol. 9, p. 378, Vol. 11/1, p.141 (Stuttgart 1955)). However, such pressure reactions require considerable technical effort. The F-alkylation of ammonia, primary or secondary amines with alcohols and ethers is known (see methods of the organ * Chemie (HOUBEN-WEYl) Vol 11/1, p.108-198, Stuttgart 1957).
Andererseits enthalten reine wasserarme Hydroxyalkansulfosäuren schon beträchtliche Mengen des entsprechenden SultOHS«Also known is the quaternization of 2-methylbenzheteroazoles with pure hydroxyalkanesulfonic acids (Ees, Disel, V3j2, i 163 j 73, 4, 0, ·, 88-63, 259 d). The purification of hydroxyalkanesulfonic acids is relatively complicated , so that for their representation one usually goes the way over the hydrolysis of the corresponding sultones. On the other hand, pure dehydrated hydroxyalkanesulfonic acids already contain considerable amounts of the corresponding SultOHS. "
Other methods for the synthesis of 0C 7 Oj ~ Aminoalkanstilf ο acids are the chlorinating oxidation of the corresponding thiosulfates and the oxidation of mercapto-group-containing alkylaraines (SU-PS 555 095, CA 87-84, 521 c).

Such oxidation leads to loss of yield in the case of unstable compounds.

The reaction takes place, after evaporation of the water, by heating to temperatures of 150 ° C. to 200 ° C., preferably 180 ° C.
Reaktionsgleichung IV),Since the elimination of water, alcohol or carboxylic acid in the pure 1,3-'bis · 1,4-Hydroxyalkansulfosäuren or their OH-functional derivatives already at temperatures above 80 0 C takes place at a considerable rate and thereby form certain amounts of sultone, goes in the alkylation according to the invention from the aqueous solution of the unpurified acids. It should be in the aqueous solutions Ilydroxyalkansulfosäuren or their OH-functional derivatives containing at least 20 'and the water content is not higher than 50 % . Each addition of the equivalent amount of base - a small base excess of the order of 10 fo has even been found to be very advantageous distilled ~ the water and finally drives the internal temperature of the reaction mixture to the most favorable alkylation temperature, which is approximately between 150 0 C and 200 0 C. is, preferably at 180 0 C (Yergl. Aqueous solutions of Hydroxyalkansulfosäuren or their OH-functional derivatives are to be regarded as physiologically harmless. Therefore, a significant advantage of the method according to the invention is that here a generally applicable Sulfoalkylierungsverfahren was created, which excludes the implementation of the highly health-endangering lower sultones in the production of N-sulfoalkyl-substituted amines.
Helferich u. Bollert, Cheiiie Ber. 94 (1961) 505).Moreover, with the process according to the invention N-alkylations are possible in which the sultone method failed. For example, e.g. the 1,6-hexanesultone required for the introduction of the 1,6-sulfohexyl radical can not be prepared for steric reasons (compare Helferich and Bollert, Cheiiie Ber., 94 (1961) 505).
A particular advantage of the solution according to the invention is that the unpurified hydroxyalkanesulfonic acids used as starting materials for the alkylation do not require any particular technical complexity and the reaction is carried out without isolation of intermediates in the one-stage reaction phases.
1 nauc*. soobso«, Lwow Politechn. Inst. ,1975 (5)Although the yield of sulfoalkylamine is influenced by the purity of the starting materials, in particular those of the sulfonic acid III, this influence is considerably lower than in the cyclization to the sultone (JWAM 1 OWA, Dokl 1 nauc * soobso, Lwow Politechn. Inst , 1975 (5)
Thus, the total yield, relative to the sulfonic acid, is much higher than when the detour is made via the corresponding sultone.
