技术领域

背景技术
通用移动电信系统(UMTS)是在被称为国际移动电信-2000(IMT-2000)的框架内开发的‘第三代’(3G)移动通信系统。UMTS将在为高质量无线多媒体通信创建大量市场中起关键性作用。UMTS将启用许多无线能力，使得能够通过固定网络、无线网络和卫星网络，将高值宽带信息、商业和娱乐服务传送给移动用户。UMTS将加速电信、信息技术、媒体和内容工业之间的会聚，以传输新的服务并创造产生收入的服务。和其2G或2.5G无线蜂窝对应系统相比，UMTS将在稳态条件下、以大约每秒2兆比特的数据速率来传输低成本、高容量的移动通信，并具有全球漫游和其它先进的能力。 
与无线局域网(WLAN)相比，UMTS网络的一个缺点是高频谱成本和低数据速率。与没有频谱成本的WLAN基础结构的成本相比，在频谱成本方面和在用于所支持的带宽的总系统成本方面，蜂窝基础结构的总成本都很高。另一方面，WLAN更加难以具有由蜂窝系统系统的广域覆盖。为了具有蜂窝技术和WLAN技术两者的优点，可以把WLAN作为蜂窝网络在热区(hotspot area)的延伸。 
因为UMTS网络使用昂贵的带宽，并且最终导致传输低数据数据速率，因此有利的是，在热区利用WLAN来获得高数据速率，以及利用UMTS来获得普遍存在的覆盖范围。为了实现这一点，移动终端将需要迅速地并且容易地从一个网络转移到另一个网络。 
发明内容
本发明提供一种把WLAN覆盖区注册为UMTS路由区(RA)的系统和方法。在根据本发明的系统中，用户设备(UE或移动站)受益于，由于减少的信令和容易转移到UMTS或GPRS系统以及从UMTS或GPRS系统转移而引起的电池节约。

具体实施方式
本发明提供一种把WLAN覆盖区注册为UMTS路由区(RA)的方法和系统。用户设备(UE)或移动站(MS)受益于，由于减少的信令和容易转移到UMTS或其它蜂窝网络(例如通用无线分组服务(GPRS)系统)以及从UMTS或其它蜂窝网络转移而引起的电池节约，优选地通过维持分组数据协议(PDP)上下文来实现这一点。UMTS网络由于减小的信令负荷而受益。 
移动用户通过无线接入网(节点B和无线电网络控制器)，连接到UMTS核心网(服务GPRS支持节点/移动交换中心和网关GPRS支持节点)。WLAN站或移动终端(MT)在WLAN的基础结构方式下附属到接入点(AP)。为了从UMTS网络移到WLAN网络，反之亦然，移动用户必须支持UMTS UE和WLAN MT(移动终端)两者的堆栈。 
作为启动在蜂窝小区(例如3G小区)和WLAN热区覆盖区之间的平稳越区切换(handoff)的一种方法，通过在UE位于WLAN覆盖区中的时候、保持PDP上下文有效，来保持平稳地重新进入到UMTS网络中。结果，电池能量和UMTS信令信道必须被周期地使用，来发信号给UMTS核心网(CN)，以保持PDP上下文有效。而且，如果在空闲状态下，周期的RA消息没有被交换，则UE“分离”，并且当返回到UMTS网络时，需要开始“附属”过程。这可以导致大的越区切换延迟。 
本发明提供这样一种方法，该方法用于当用户位于WLAN覆盖区中时保持PDP上下文有效，导致了UE电池和网络资源的节约。本发明限制了，当处于WLAN覆盖区中的时候、用于通信的发送和接收UMTS无线电的使用。然而，UE保持“附属到”UMTS网络，并且维持PDP上下文，以便一旦重新进入就实现平稳的越区切换。

还应该理解，可以以各种形式的硬件、软件或它们的组合，来实施附 图中所示的元件。优选地，以硬件和软件的组合的形式、在一个或多个适当编程的通用设备上实施这些元件，该通用设备可以包括处理器、存储器和输入/输出接口。

WLAN 14包括多个AP 30，该AP 30被提供用于允许UE或MS 40访问并使用WLAN。通过本发明，IWF 25和UMTS网络12相互作用，并且(通过IWF 25)连接到WLAN环境。 
UMTS-WLAN交互工作 
3G UMTS移动站40和包括节点B 11和无线电网络控制器(RNC)9 的无线接入网(RAN)8通信。RAN 8又附属到核心网(CN)13，该CN 13包括SGSN 28(基于分组的服务)、MSC 21(基于电路的服务)和GGSN 24(到其它PLMN的网关)。把尽可能多的数据从UMTS转移到WLAN节约了高成本的UMTS频谱和非常宝贵的数据带宽。有利的是，用未许可的频带、高数据速率WLAN，诸如IEEE 802.11和ETSI Hiperlan2，代替UMTS，来节约UMTS无线电资源，以及提高UMTS RAN 8的效率。

在图1中，结构10显示了WLAN-UMTS交互工作。图1是耦合功能部件的一种说明性方式。耦合这些和其它部件的其它方式也可以被考虑，并且可以根据本发明被实施。许多AP 30反过来连接到IWF(网络互联功能)25，IWF 25又基于耦合(coupling)，通过因特网7或通过到UMTS网络节点(例如RNC或SGSN或GGSN)的专用链路，连接到3G网络12。IWF 25的功能取决于WLAN与UMTS网络之间的耦合。 
参考图2，图2显示了，在WLAN覆盖区作为UMTS路由区的UMTS网络注册过程中、建立数据承载的步骤。一旦移动站40被接通，移动站40就发现合适的小区(小区选择)，试图利用信令连接“附属到”网络，并执行有规律的区域更新，以保持附属。请求110从UE 40的GPRS移动管理层(GMM)被发出。在UE 40与RNC 9之间建立无线电资源控制(RRC)连接(112)，接着建立到CN 13的信令连接(114)。然后，从UE 40向RNC 9发出服务请求(116)。然后，在各个部件之间执行周知的安全功能(118)。完成安全检查之后，UE 40可以被“附属到”蜂窝网络(120)。

在UMTS中，取决于UE状态，来执行不同级别的移动过程(mobilityprocedure)。例如，当UE处于分组移动性管理(PMM)空闲模式下，则在SGSN 28(CN 13)中分辨UE位置，精确到路由区，并且UE执行周期的RA更新过程。当UE处于PMM连接模式下，由服务RNC来跟踪MS的位置。 
由操作者定义的路由区标识符(RAI)识别一个或几个小区。在UMTS中，RAI被广播给处于空闲模式下的UE，并且在建立的RRC连接上被通知给处于连接模式下的MS，作为GMM系统信息。与PMM状态无关，如果RAI改变，则MS执行路由区更新。因而，当UE检测到它已经进入到新的RA，或者当周期的RA更新定时器已经到期时，路由区更新就发生了。SGSN通过通知它也处理旧的RA，来检测该路由区更新是SGSN内部的路由区更新。在该情况下，SGSN具有关于MS的必需信息，并且不需要通知GGSN或HLR关于新的MS位置。周期的RA更新始终是SGSN内部的路由区更新。 
参考图3，将说明性地描述SGSN内部的路由区更新过程。MS 40向SGSN 28发送路由区更新请求201。安全功能202被执行，以确保访问被授权给适当的用户。然后，从SGSN 28发出路由区更新接受203。最后，路由区更新完成204确认，路由区已经被更新，或者不需要更新。 
本领域技术人员所周知的周期RA更新定时器T3312监测MS 40中的周期RA更新过程。周期RA更新定时器的长度在路由区更新接受(203)或附属接受消息中被发送。周期RA更新定时器在RA内是惟一的(例如，默认可以是54分钟)。当MS从PMM连接模式转到PMM空闲模式时，定时器T3312被复位，并且从其初始值开始。当MS进入PMM连接模式时，定时器T3312被停止。 
当定时器T3312到期时，周期路由区更新过程被启动，并且定时器T3312被设置为其初始值，用于下一次开始。UMTS网络借助于移动可达定时器(mobile reachable timer)，来监督周期路由区更新过程。移动可达定时器可以比周期RA更新定时器长(作为默认值，长4分钟)。根据本发明，可以把WLAN覆盖区转变成UMTS路由区。在RA重叠的情况下， 诸如在WLAN和UMTS RA重叠的情况下，RAI可以用于向MS指出，该MS应该使用哪一个RA。 
再次参考图1，如果在进入WLAN的时候已经建立了PDP上下文，则由两种可能的情况： 
1.如果UE处于PMM空闲模式下 
在3G-SGSN中分辨UE位置，精确到路由区。预期UE 40在PMM空闲模式下发送周期RA更新消息。WLAN IWF能够广播新的RAI(由SGSN28预先分配的)。通过对UE的GMM上下文中存储的RAI和从IWF 25收到的RAI进行比较，UE检测到需要执行RA更新(SGSN内部的)。UE向SGSN发送路由区更新请求。SGSN可以从由UE发送的新RAI，识别该UE现在处在WLAN覆盖区中。因为在路由区更新接受(图3中的201)消息中被发送的周期RA更新定时器的长度在RA内是惟一的，因此，在从SGSN发往UE的路由区更新接受中的周期RA更新定时器的长度被设置为网络可容许的最大值。从而，当UE处于WLAN中时，该UE不必以和它处于UMTS单元中时的相同速率，来保持发送周期RA更新消息。

一旦UE移出WLAN覆盖区，RAI就改变，因此UE将执行RA更新过程。如果需要发送数据，则可以建立PS信令连接，并且UE可以向SGSN发送服务数据请求，来在UMTS网络中设置数据承载。 
2.如果UE处于PMM连接模式下 
新RAI在建立的RRC连接上被通知给处于RRC连接模式下的MS，作为GMM系统信息。取决于用于交互工作(25)的耦合，UE现在通过WLAN系统建立数据平面(data plane)，并释放UMTS网络中的无线电资 源(这是交互工作的优点之一)。UE现在进入PMM空闲状态。MS中的保存功能41允许保存和释放的RAB相关的有效PDP上下文，而无需CN13中的更改，然后可以在稍后的阶段容易地重新建立RAB。然而，当GMM状态改变到PMM分离模式时，则用于UE的所有有效PDP上下文都被丢失。 
保持平稳地重新进入UMTS网络的一种方法是，当UE处于WLAN覆盖区内时，保持PDP上下文有效。因此，处于PMM空闲状态下的UE需要保持进行RA更新，以避免进入PMM分离状态及丢失PDP上下文。 
一旦UE移动到WLAN覆盖区以外，RAI就改变，因此UE执行RA更新过程。如果需要发送数据，则可以建立PS信令连接，并且UE可以向SGSN发送服务数据请求，来在UMTS网络中设置数据承载。 
参考图4，图4所示框图/流程图显示了，根据本发明把WLAN注册为UMTS路由区来进行WLAN-UMTS交互工作的系统/方法。在方框402中，移动站或用户移动穿过蜂窝网络，例如UMTS网络。用户设备(UE)可以处于空闲模式或连接模式下。如果UE处于空闲模式下，则在方框404中，可以在蜂窝网络内确定UE位置(优选地由SGSN来确定)，精确到路由区。在方框406中，UE 40在PMM空闲模式下发送周期RA更新消息。WLAN IWF可以广播新的RAI(由SGSN预先分配的)。 
在方框408中，通过对UE的GMM上下文中存储的RAI和从IWF收到的RAI进行比较，UE检测到需要执行RA更新(SGSN内部)，并且UE向SGSN发送路由区更新请求。在方框410中，SGSN从由UE发送的新RAI，识别该UE现在处于WLAN覆盖区中。因为在路由区更新接受消息中被发送的周期RA更新定时器的长度在RA内是惟一的，因此在方框411中，在从SGSN发往UE的路由区更新接受中的周期RA更新定时器的长度优选地被设置为网络可容许的最大值。当UE处于WLAN中时，该UE不必保持发送周期RA更新消息。因此，如果UE处于WLAN范围内(基于SGSN中的某些位置判据)，则蜂窝服务供应商能够通过在SGSN中提供附加功能，来把用户的RAI改变为WLAN覆盖区的RAI，以使用户移动到WLAN，来控制UMTS小区的负荷。 
在方框412中，用于UE和UMTS两者的无线电的使用都被限制，以 避免不必要的UMTS信令。这又导致UE电池和网络资源的节约。在方框414中，因为SGSN能够从RAI更新消息，来确定UE处于哪一个WLAN中，并且WLAN区可以大约为100m，因此基于位置的服务和蜂窝操作者可以有利地向用户提供高数据速率服务。 
在方框416中，一旦UE移到WLAN覆盖区之外，RAI就改变，因此UE将执行RA更新过程。如果需要发送数据，则在方框430中，建立PS信令连接，并且UE可以向SGSN发送服务数据请求，来在UMTS网络中设置数据承载。 
如果处于有效模式，则在方框420，新的RAI在建立的RRC连接上被发送给处于RRC连接模式下的UE，作为GMM系统信息。在方框422中，取决于用于在WLAN与UMTS之间采用交互工作(25)的系统耦合，UE现在通过WLAN系统建立数据平面，并释放UMTS网络中的无线电资源。在方框424中，UE进入PMM空闲状态；然而，MS中的保存功能允许保存和释放的RAB相关的有效PDP上下文，而无需CN 13中的更改。在稍后的阶段，可以重新建立这些RAB。 
在方框426中，通过在UE处于WLAN覆盖区中的时候保持PDP上下文有效，来维持用于UE的有效PDP上下文，以便从WLAN重新进入到UMTS网络中。优选地，这是由UE在PMM空闲状态下执行的，来进行RA更新，以避免进入PMM分离状态及丢失PDP上下文。 
在方框428中，一旦UE移到WLAN覆盖区之外，RAI就改变，因此UE执行RA更新过程。如果需要发送数据，则在方框430中，可以建立PS信令连接，并且UE可以向SGSN发送服务数据请求，来在UMTS网络中设置数据承载。 
本发明有利地限制无线电使用，并避免了不必要的、用于周期RA更新过程的UMTS信令。这导致了UE电池的节约，以及UMTS网络信令负荷的减小，这是因为每次周期RA更新都将需要重新建立PS信令，导致了无线和有线资源的消耗。另外，本发明维持PDP上下文，这样能够保持在重新进入UMTS网络时的小的越区切换延迟(如果不必由于较少的资源，而由网络重新协商PDP上下文)。在不使用本发明的情况下避免周期的RA意味着，UE从PMM空闲转到PMM分离状态。因此，一旦重新进 入到UMTS网络中，UE将必须从“附属”过程开始，启动PDP上下文，并且只有这样才能建立数据承载，导致了大的越区切换延迟。 
因为SGSN能够确定UE的位置(通过RAI更新消息)，UE处于哪一个WLAN中，并且WLAN区的直径大约为100m，因此3G操作者可以向用户提供基于位置的服务和高数据速率服务。另外，本发明使得移动用户能够检测进入到WLAN小区中(由WLAN IWF广播的新RAI)和从WLAN小区退出(不再能够从WLAN IWF收听RAI广播，并且能够通过最近的UMTS节点B收听RAI广播)。因此，移动用户能够利用单一手提设备在WLAN和UMTS系统之间平稳地移动。如果UE处于WLAN范围内(基于SGSN中的某些位置判据)，则本发明也使3G服务供应商能够通过在SGSN中提供附加功能，来把UE的RAI改变为WLAN覆盖区的RAI，以使UE移动到热区中的WLAN，来控制UMTS小区的负荷。 
应该理解，可以和WLAN与UMTS网络之间的耦合无关地，来实施本发明。即使利用“松”耦合，如果WLAN IWF广播其RAI(由SGSN/3G操作者预先配置的)，并且UE通知SGSN关于其RAI变化(利用在它进入WLAN时它所具有的UMTS连接)，则SGSN也能够保持PDP上下文有效，这是因为它能够把RAI识别为WLAN的RAI，并且能够设置大的周期RA更新定时器值。 
虽然已经描述了把WLAN注册为UMTS路由区来进行WLAN-UMTS交互工作的优选实施例(预定为说明性的而非限制性的)，但是应该注意，按照以上教导，本领域技术人员可以作出更改和变化。因此，应该理解，可以在落入如附加权利要求所概述的本发明精神和范围内的本发明特殊实施例中，进行改变。 

Claims (18)

1.一种把无线局域网注册为移动网络路由区的方法，惟一地把所述无线局域网识别为移动网络的路由区，所述方法包括以下步骤：
确定来自移动网络内的用户的服务请求的位置；
确定该位置是否在无线局域网接入点中或在无线局域网接入点附近；
如果该位置在无线局域网接入点处或者在无线局域网接入点附近，则在利用无线局域网服务该请求的时候维持分组数据协议上下文，以在无线局域网与移动网络之间提供交互工作。
2.根据权利要求1所述的方法，其中在利用无线局域网服务该请求的时候维持分组数据协议上下文的步骤包括：在使用无线局域网的时候限制用户与移动网络之间的无线电信令。
3.根据权利要求1所述的方法，进一步包括步骤：接收用于移动网络中的路由区的服务的请求。
4.根据权利要求3所述的方法，其中无线局域网被识别为移动网络的路由区。
5.根据权利要求3所述的方法，进一步包括步骤：当用户处于无线局域网的覆盖区中时，设置周期路由区更新定时器值，来减少当用户处于无线局域网中时的信令。
6.根据权利要求1所述的方法，进一步包括步骤：当用户移到无线局域网的覆盖区之外时，通过分组数据协议上下文建立分组交换信令连接。
7.根据权利要求1所述的方法，进一步包括步骤：通过使用户通信服务移到无线局域网，来控制移动小区的负荷。
8.根据权利要求1所述的方法，其中，通过以下来在移动网络与无线局域网之间提供交互工作：
设置路由区更新定时器，来减少移动网络的路由区更新的数量。
9.根据权利要求6所述的方法，其中维持分组数据协议上下文的步骤包括：当退出无线局域网并重新进入移动网络时维持分组数据协议上下文，来减小越区切换延迟。
10.根据权利要求1所述的方法，其进一步包括步骤：通过把用户的路由区标识符改变为无线局域网覆盖区的路由区标识符，使用户移到无线局域网，来使移动服务供应商能够控制小区的负荷。
11.根据权利要求1所述的系统，其中所述移动网络是蜂窝网络。
12.一种把无线局域网用作移动网络路由区的系统，所述系统包括：
移动网络，该移动网络能够确定服务请求被发出的位置；
该移动网络包括基于分组的支持节点，该支持节点确定是否可通过无线局域网对该请求进行服务，该无线局域网在移动网络中被识别为路由区；
具有双协议栈的用户设备，用于当利用无线局域网服务该请求时维持分组数据协议上下文，来在无线局域网与移动网络之间提供平稳越区切换。
13.根据权利要求12所述的系统，进一步包括惟一的路由区标识符，该路由区标识符识别移动网络中的无线局域网。
14.根据权利要求12所述的系统，进一步包括延迟更新的周期路由区更新定时器，其中当用户处于无线局域网覆盖区中时，定时器值被设置，以减少当用户处于无线局域网区中时的信令。
15.根据权利要求12所述的系统，其中移动网络包括通用移动电信系统。
16.根据权利要求12所述的系统，其中用于维持分组数据协议上下文的具有双协议栈的用户设备进一步包括用于使用无线接入承载设置过程在移动网络与无线局域网之间建立交互工作的装置。
17.根据权利要求12所述的系统，其中移动网络通过路由区标识符更新消息，来得知用户是否处于无线局域网覆盖区中。
18.根据权利要求12所述的系统，其中所述移动网络是蜂窝网络。
