Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及等离子显示面板,并且更为具体地涉及一种用于驱动等离子显示面板装置和方法。
背景技术
等离子显示面板(在下文中,作为“PDP”提到)适于以在比如He+Xe,Ne+Xe或He+Ne+Xe的气体放电期间产生的紫外线辐射荧光材料来显示图像。随着近来的技术进步,这种PDP可以被制造得薄而且大,并且可以提供大大改进的图像质量。具体地说,三电极AC表面放电类型PDP具有低的驱动电压和产品寿命较长的优点,这是因为通过在放电情况下在表面累积的壁电荷降低了放电所需的电压,并且保护电极不受放电产生的飞溅影响。
参考图1,在现有的3电极AC表面放电类型PDP中,n个扫描电极Y1到Yn和n个公共维持电极Z与在其间间隔有放电空间的m个数据电极X1到Xm交叉。在交叉点形成m×n个单元。在相邻的数据电极X1到Xm之间形成用于防止在彼此水平相邻的单元中的电和光干扰的阻挡条2。
扫描电极Y1到Yn在以将扫描信号循序加到扫描电极以选择扫描线的方式选择的单元中产生维持放电,并且之后将维持脉冲共同地加到扫描电极。公共的维持电极Z在以将和加到扫描电极Y1到Yn的维持脉冲交替应用的维持脉冲加到维持电极Z的方式选择的单元中产生维持放电。当施加和扫描信号同步的数据脉冲时,数据电极X1到Xm选择单元1。
时分驱动PDP,其中将构成一个屏幕的帧周期(NTSC模式:16.67ms)划分为一些子场,每一子场具有不同发射数量以实现图像的灰度级。将每一子场划分为用于初始化整个屏幕的复位周期、用于选择扫描线并从所选的扫描线中选择单元的寻址周期、以及用于根据放电数量实现灰度级的维持周期(或显示周期)。例如,如果需要以256个灰度级显示图像,将对应于1/60秒的帧周期(16.67ms)划分为八个子场SF1到SF8,如图2所示。另外,如上所述,将每个子场SF1到SF8细分为复位周期、寻址周期和维持周期。在这时,每一子场的复位和寻址周期和每个子场相同,然而每一子场中的显示周期以2n(n=0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7)的比率增加。
但是,如果以其中寻址周期和维持周期彼此分开的所谓的“ADS(寻址和显示分开的)”模式驱动PDP的全部扫描线SC1到SCn,如图2所示,因为维持周期由于寻址周期的增长而缩短,存在不能以高亮度和高画面质量显示图像的问题。在这时,一个扫描线包括响应于相同扫描信号提供给其数据的一行单元。例如,如果添加子场以增加分辨率或减少在运动画面中的伪轮廓噪声,这伴随着扫描线SC1到SCn的数量增加并且单元1的数量被增加,非显示周期,具体地说,寻址周期在有限时间内变长。因此,其是显示周期的维持周期相对地缩短。
为了解决这个驱动时间的缺点,本发明的申请者提出了用于减少寻址周期的装置和方法,其中以可以在图1中扫描的扫描电极来代替维持电极,并且将屏幕划分为多个块,使得可以在每一块中进行扫描。(参看美国专利No.6,288,693)。根据这个现有方法的装置,多个块的任意一个被操作为寻址周期以便执行扫描,并且将前述块之外的多个块中的至少一个操作为维持周期,以便执行维持放电。例如,如图3所示,在驱动PDP、且将它划分为两个块的情况下,当上半块被操作为寻址周期时,则下半块被操作为维持周期。如果在预定周期期间在相同屏幕中的一个块被操作为维持周期,同时另一块被操作为寻址周期,则存在同一屏幕中的亮度不同的问题。
另外,作为另一分开驱动的方法,可以存在其中不同块被操作为寻址周期或维持周期的方法,如图4所示。但是,在这个方法中,存在其中因为辐射中心点在每帧位于相同时间点而产生闪烁的问题。
发明内容
因此,本发明的目的是至少解决现有技术的问题和缺点。
本发明的目的是提供用于驱动PDP的装置和方法,其中当驱动屏幕且将其划分为两个或多个块时最小化块之间的亮度差值。
为实现上述目的,根据本发明的实施例,提供了驱动PDP的方法,其包括步骤:将屏幕划分为两个或多个块,并且在多个块的第一块中执行寻址,并且之后在多个块的第二块中执行寻址。将在第一块的寻址开始和第二块的寻址开始之间的时间间隔设置在0和5ms之间的范围内。
根据本发明的实施例,提供了一种用于驱动等离子显示面板的装置,包括等离子显示面板,其被划分为两个或多个块;以及驱动单元,其在多个块的第一块中执行寻址,并且之后在多个块的第二块中执行寻址。该驱动单元控制在第一块的寻址开始和第二块的寻址开始之间的时间间隔在0和5ms之间的范围中。

下面将参考附图以更加详细的方式描述本发明的优选实施例。
根据本发明的实施例,提供了驱动PDP的方法,其包括步骤:将屏幕划分为两个或多个块,并且在多个块的第一块中执行寻址,并且之后在多个块的第二块中执行寻址。
在第一块的寻址开始和第二块的寻址开始之间的时间间隔被设置在0和5ms之间的范围中。

参考图5,在根据本发明第一实施例驱动PDP的方法中,驱动PDP且将其划分为上半块BL1和下半块BL2。在给定时间间隔(Δt)启动上半块BL1和下半块BL2的寻址和扫描。
在1帧周期期间,将上半块BL1和下半块BL2的每一个时分驱动为N个子场。在这时,以其亮度加权低的子场到其亮度加权高的子场的顺序设置每一块BL1、BL2中的子场,或与之相反,如图5所示。另外,可以以子场的亮度加权变得不连续或随机的方式来设置每一块BL1、BL2中的子场,以减少降低画面质量的因素,比如运动画面伪轮廓噪声。另外,可以以子场的寻址周期集中的方式设置块BL1、BL2的每一个中的子场,并且寻址集中周期在短时间期间不在块BL1、BL2之间重叠,如在美国专利No.6,288,693中公开的。
在根据本发明的PDP驱动方法中,需要即使以任意模式布置子场,上半块BL1和下半块BL2的寻址周期和维持周期重叠,并且两个块BL1、BL2的寻址开始时间点或扫描开始时间点在一帧周期的至少一些周期期间分开给定的时间间隔(Δt)。将寻址时间间隔(Δt)设置到一时间间隔,其中当同时以裸眼看两个块BL1、BL2时,很少显示出在两个BL1、BL2之间的亮度差值。具体地说,设置寻址时间间隔(Δt)到从0ms到5ms的时间范围,优选地0ms到2ms。另外,必须将寻址时间间隔(Δt)设置在具有最高亮度加权的子场,例如,图5中的第N个子场SFN的周期中,使得在两个块BL1、BL2之间不显示出亮度差值。
韩国专利申请Nos.10-2000-0012669,10-2000-0053214,10-2001-0003003,10-2001-0006492,10-2002-0082512,10-2002-0082513,10-2002-0082576等都是由本发明的申请者提交的,它们公开了所谓的“SWSE(选择性写入和选择性擦除)块”,其中在存在于一帧周期中的一些子场的寻址周期期间由写入放电选择打开单元,并且在另外的子场的寻址周期期间由擦除放电选择关闭单元。
在根据本发明的PDP驱动方法中,在一帧周期中设置的子场可以包括上述SWSE模式的子场。在这个情况中,因为可以进一步缩短寻址周期,在高速驱动中是有益的。另外,在根据本发明的PDP的驱动方法中,可以以其中仅包括在寻址周期期间选择打开单元的多个子场的选择性写入模式设置子场,或在其中仅包括在寻址周期期间选择关闭单元的多个子场的选择性擦除模式设置子场。
图6是示出了根据本发明实施例的用于驱动PDP的装置结构的框图。
参考图6,根据本发明实施例的用于驱动PDP的装置包括:在上半部分和下半部分之间划分数据电极XU1到XUm,XD1到XDm的PDP60,用于提供数据给上半块BL1的数据电极XU1到XUm的第一数据驱动单元61A,用于提供数据给下半块BL2的数据电极XD1到XDm的第二数据驱动单元61B,用于驱动扫描电极Y1到Yn的扫描驱动单元62,以及用于驱动维持电极Z1到Zn的维持驱动单元63。

在时序控制装置的控制下,在上半块BL1的寻址周期期间,扫描驱动单元62将扫描脉冲循序加到扫描电极Y1到Yn/2,并且同时,在下半块BL2的寻址周期期间,将扫描脉冲循序加到扫描电极Yn/2+1到Yn,这些是在从用于在上半块BL1中的第一时间产生的第一扫描脉冲经过预定时间间隔(Δt)之后开始的。另外,在上半块BL1和下半块BL2的维持周期期间,扫描驱动单元62将维持脉冲加到扫描电极Y1到Yn。
在时序控制装置的控制下,维持驱动单元63用于在上半块BL1和下半块BL2的寻址周期期间,将正极性的DC偏压加到维持电极Z1到Zn,并且和扫描驱动单元63交替工作,还在维持周期期间将维持脉冲加到维持电极Z1到Zn。
图7示出了用于解释由图6所示的驱动单元产生的驱动波形的波形。
在图7中,省略在复位周期中产生的初始化波形。
参考图7,在上半块BL1的寻址周期期间,第一数据驱动单元61A施加写入或擦除数据Dp给上半块BL1的寻址电极XU1至XUn,并且扫描驱动单元62将与上半块BL1的数据同步的扫描脉冲Sp循序加到第一到第(n/2)扫描电极Y1到Yn/2。
在上半块BL1中,在产生第一数据脉冲Dp和扫描脉冲Sp之后经过预定时间间隔(Δt)之后,开始下半块BL2的寻址周期。在下半块BL2的寻址周期期间,第二数据驱动单元62A将写入或擦除数据Dp施加给下半块BL2的寻址电极XD1至XDn,并且扫描驱动单元62将与下半块BL2的数据同步的扫描脉冲Sp施加到第(n/2+1)至第n扫描电极Yn/2+1到Yn。
同样的,在上半块BL1和下半块BL2中,寻址周期重叠并且在它们重叠的周期中同时扫描两条或多条线。因此,缩短了寻址周期。
同样的,因为在上半块BL1和下半块BL2的每一个中产生寻址放电,在选择打开单元或关闭单元之后,将维持脉冲Sus施加到上半块BL1和下半块BL2的每一个中的扫描电极Y1到Yn和维持电极Z1到Zn。因此,在打开单元中产生维持放电。
同时,不像参考图5和7做出的描述,可以首先扫描下半块BL2,并在预定时间间隔之后扫描上半块BL1。
在本发明的实施例中描述了驱动PDP且将其划分为两个块:上半块和下半块。但是,应该注意根据本发明的驱动PDP的装置和方法并不限于上述实施例,而是可以驱动PDP且将其划分为k个块,其中将寻址电极划分为k个。
如上所述,根据本发明,在其中驱动屏幕且将其划分为两个或多个块的情况中,以这种方式可以最小化多个块之间的亮度差值,即,使得在多个块之间的寻址开始时间点不同,且具有设置的时间间隔,使得不显示出多个块之间的亮度差值。另外,根据本发明,可以防止当以相同方式但是没有时间间隔驱动两个块时显示的闪烁等。
这样描述了本发明,很明显可以做出多种修改。这种修改不应该被认为脱离本发明的精神和范围,并且所有对本领域普通技术人员来说很明显的改变都意在被包括在下面权利要求的范围之中。
Claims (12)
1.一种驱动等离子显示面板的方法,其包括步骤:
将屏幕划分为两个或多个块;以及
在多个块的第一块中执行寻址,并且之后在多个块的第二块中执行寻址,
其中,在第一块的寻址开始和第二块的寻址开始之间的时间间隔的范围是从0到5ms。
2.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,执行寻址的步骤进一步包括步骤:提供数据给第一块的数据电极,并且同时提供扫描脉冲给第一块的扫描电极;以及提供数据给与第一块的数据电极分开的第二块的数据电极,并且同时施加扫描脉冲给第二块的扫描电极。
3.如权利要求1所述的方法,进一步包括在执行寻址之后在每一块中产生维持放电的步骤。
4.如权利要求2所述的方法,其中该数据是用于选择要被打开的打开单元的写入数据或是用于选择要被关闭的关闭单元的擦除数据。
5.如权利要求4所述的方法,其中,该执行寻址的步骤进一步包括步骤:在选择性写入子场中施加写入数据给数据电极;且在选择性擦除子场中施加擦除数据给数据电极。
6.如权利要求1所述的方法,其中,该在第一块的寻址开始和第二块的寻址开始之间的时间间隔小于最大亮度加权的子场周期。
7.一种驱动等离子显示面板的装置,其包括:
等离子显示面板,其被划分为两个或多个块;以及
驱动单元,其在多个块的第一块中执行寻址,并且之后在多个块的第二块中执行寻址,
其中,该驱动单元控制在第一块的寻址开始和第二块的寻址开始之间的时间间隔在0和5ms之间的范围中。
8.如权利要求7所述的装置,其中,该驱动单元包括:
第一驱动单元,其施加数据给第一块的数据电极,并且同时施加扫描脉冲给第一块的扫描电极;以及
第二驱动单元,其施加数据给与第一块的数据电极分开的第二块的数据电极,并且同时施加扫描脉冲给第二块的扫描电极。
9.如权利要求7所述的装置,进一步包括在执行寻址之后,在每一块中产生维持放电的维持驱动单元。
10.如权利要求8所述的装置,其中,该数据是用于选择要被打开的打开单元的写入数据,或是用于选择要被关闭的关闭单元的擦除数据。
11.如权利要求10所述的装置,其中,该驱动单元在选择性写入子场中施加写入数据给数据电极,且在选择性擦除子场中施加擦除数据给数据电极。
12.如权利要求7所述的装置,其中,该在第一块的寻址开始和第二块的寻址开始之间的时间间隔小于最大亮度加权的子场周期。
