背景技术
等离子体显示装置是平面显示装置,它使用由气体放电产生的等离子体来显示字符或图像。根据其大小,等离子体显示装置具有几十到几百万的放电单元,它们以矩阵图案排列。
等离子体显示装置的等离子体显示板包括在其上形成有维持和扫描电极的基板、以及与所述扫描和维持电极垂直形成的寻址电极的另一个基板。另外,分别对应于扫描电极而形成维持电极,并且维持电极的终端连接在一起。

图2图解了在每个子场中分别被施加到寻址电极A1-Am、维持电极X1-Xn和扫描电极Y1-Yn的驱动波形。在下面的说明中所述的放电单元形成在寻址电极、维持电极和扫描电极的交叉区域的放电空间中。在此使用的“壁电荷”表示在接近放电单元的每个电极的、诸如介电层之类的壁上形成并且被积累在电极上的电荷。所述壁电荷将描述为被“形成”或“积累”在电极上,即使壁电荷不实际上接触电极。而且,在此使用的“壁电荷”表示由壁电荷在放电单元的壁上形成的电势差。
图2是按照本发明的一个例证实施例的等离子体显示板的驱动波形图。在图2中,一个帧被划分为8个子场:第一子场到第八子场。如图2所示,每个子场包括复位期、寻址期和维持期。第一子场的复位期包括上升周期和下降周期,第二到第八子场的复位期包括下降周期。在此,具有上升和下降周期的复位期被定义为“主复位期”,仅仅具有下降周期的复位期被定义为“辅助复位期”。
在第一子场中的复位期的上升周期期间,在将维持电极X保持在0V的同时,扫描电极Y的电压从电压Vs向电压Vset提高。当扫描电极Y的电压提高时,在扫描和寻址电极Y和A之间和在扫描和维持电极Y和X之间出现弱放电。于是,在扫描电极Y上形成负(-)壁电荷,并且在寻址和维持电极A和X上形成正(+)壁电荷。
在第一子场中的复位期的下降周期期间,在将维持电极X保持在电压Ve的同时,扫描电极Y的电压从电压Vs向电压Vnf降低。在扫描电极Y的电压降低的时候,在扫描和维持电极Y和X之间和在扫描和寻址电极Y和A之间出现弱放电。于是,消除了在扫描电极Y上形成负(-)壁电荷和在寻址和维持电极A和X上形成的正(+)壁电荷,并且初始化了放电单元。
随后,在用于选择点亮单元的寻址期期间,分别向点亮单元的扫描和寻址电极Y和A施加电压VscL的扫描脉冲和电压Va的寻址脉冲。未被选择的扫描电极Y被偏置在大于电压VscL的电压VscH,并且向熄灭单元的寻址电极施加参考电压。然后,由于在寻址电极A的电压Va和扫描电极Y的电压VscL之间的差而产生的壁电荷和在寻址和扫描电极A和Y上形成的壁电荷,在单元上产生寻址放电。结果,在扫描电极Y上形成正(+)壁电荷,在维持和寻址电极X和A上形成负(-)壁电荷。
随后,在第一子场的维持期期间,向扫描电极Y和维持电极X施加维持放电脉冲,结果,在扫描电极Y和维持电极X中反转了放电脉冲的极性,因此放电脉冲交替地具有高电平电压(在图2中的Vs)和低电平电压(在图2中的0V)。即,当向扫描电极Y施加电压Vs时向维持电极X施加0V,当向维持电极X施加电压Vs时向扫描电极Y施加0V。然后,当通过在寻址期中的寻址放电而在扫描电极Y和维持电极X之间产生壁电压时,由于壁电荷和电压Vs而在扫描电极Y和维持电极X之间产生放电。
将向扫描电极Y和维持电极X施加维持脉冲的处理重复与对应子场的加权值相对应的数量。
按照本发明的一个例证实施例,当一个子场的维持期具有小于充分地产生特定PDP的点火粒子所需要的临界数量的维持放电脉冲的数量时,被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度T2被设置为大于其他维持放电脉冲的宽度T1。在试验上,当一个子场在维持期期间具有小于15个维持放电脉冲时产生不充足的点火粒子。但是,可以按照PDP的特性来改变维持放电脉冲的数量。
当第一子场的维持期结束时,第二子场开始。第二子场的复位期仅仅包括下降周期,如上所述。
在第二子场的复位期期间,扫描电极Y的电压从在第一子场的维持期中施加的电压Vs的维持放电脉冲向电压Vnf逐渐降低。
在这种情况下,当在第一子场的维持期期间产生维持放电时,在扫描电极Y上形成负(-)壁电荷,在维持和寻址电极X和A上形成正(+)壁电荷。于是,以在扫描电极Y的电压逐渐降低的同时,以与在第一子场中的复位期的下降周期中的弱放电的产生类似的方式而产生弱放电。因为扫描电极Y的最后电压Vnf等同于第一子场的下降周期的最后电压Vnf,因此在第二子场的下降周期后的壁电荷的条件基本上等同于在第一子场的下降周期结束后的壁电荷的条件。
因为在第一子场的寻址期期间不产生寻址放电,所以在单元中的壁电荷条件被保持在第一子场的下降周期结束时的条件。当扫描电极Y的电压降低到电压Vnf时不产生放电。作为所施加的电压的结果,在结束第一子场的下降周期后,在单元上形成的壁电压接近放电点火电压。因此,因为在第二子场的复位期中不产生放电,这样的单元保持在第一子场的复位期中建立的壁电荷条件。
如上所述,当一个子场的复位期仅仅包括下降周期时,仅仅当在前一个子场中产生维持放电时产生复位放电。
在对应于第二子场的加权值而确定在维持期期间的维持放电脉冲的数量的同时,第二子场的寻址和维持期等同于第一子场的寻址和维持期。除了在维持期期间的维持放电脉冲的数量之外,第三到第八子场的寻址和维持期等同于第二子场的寻址和维持期。另外,被施加到维持电极X的最后维持脉冲的宽度——在第二到第八子场中具有小于15个维持放电脉冲——被设置为大于其他放电脉冲的宽度。
在下面的说明中,在维持期期间被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度被设置为大于在维持期期间被施加到维持电极的其他维持放电脉冲的宽度。
如上所述,在所述两个电极之间施加电压,于是产生放电。但是,放电的产生从施加电压时延迟。特别是,寻址放电很受放电延迟影响,因为寻址放电必须被产生在扫描和寻址脉冲的宽度内。因为通过在复位期结束后的放电空间内形成的壁电荷来确定寻址放电的产生,因此寻址放电延迟受到在紧接在前的子场中的壁电荷的条件的影响。通过在紧接在前的子场中的最后维持放电后的壁电荷的条件来确定在复位期结束后的壁电荷的条件,寻址放电延迟受紧接在前子场的壁电荷的条件影响。
一般,一个维持期、即向相应电极施加一个维持放电脉冲的一个周期通常是4-5微秒。被相应地施加到扫描和维持电极Y和X的维持放电脉冲的宽度T1都是大约1.5微秒。当维持脉冲的宽度一致时,在对应于维持脉冲的宽度的周期期间,由于维持放电产生的壁电荷积累到电极。但是,在其中施加了小于那个PDP的临界数量的维持放电脉冲的数量的一个子场中形成了不足数量的点火粒子,由此导致低效产生维持放电。于是,产生较弱的维持放电,并且在对应于一个典型的维持放电脉冲的宽度的周期期间,向电极积累低效的壁电荷量。特别是,因为在向维持电极X施加电压Vs后一个辅助复位期开始,当在向扫描电极X施加电压Vs之前向维持电极X施加最后维持放电脉冲的电压Vs时,需要产生足够数量的壁电荷。但是,在其中施加比那个PDP的临界数量的维持放电脉冲的数量的子场中,辅助复位操作可能变得不稳定,结果导致在维持期中低效地产生壁电荷,因此,在下一个连续的寻址期中的寻址放电的产生也变得不稳定。
按照本发明的一个例证实施例,为了克服这个问题和保证足够的壁电荷,将被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度T2设置为大于其他维持放电脉冲的宽度T1。
图3图解了在随后的子场中的寻址放电延迟相对被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度T2的变化的测量。在图3中,在维持期期间将维持放电脉冲的数量设置为3、并且改变被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度T2的同时,测量在随后的子场中的寻址放电延迟。另外,被施加到扫描电极Y的维持放电脉冲的宽度被设置为1.5微秒。
如图3所示,当在维持期期间提高被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度T2时,降低寻址放电延迟。
特别是,在红色荧光粉(R荧光粉)中被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度T2看起来不影响在蓝色荧光粉(B荧光粉)中的寻址放电延迟,而在被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度T2中的提高大大影响在绿色荧光粉(G荧光粉)中的寻址放电延迟。
特别是,与当维持放电脉冲的宽度小于1.5微秒时相比较,当所述宽度大于1.5微秒时,降低了寻址放电延迟。当维持放电脉冲的宽度大于3微秒时,大大地降低了寻址放电延迟。因此,最后维持放电脉冲的宽度被设置为大于1.5微秒,更详细而言在本发明的实施例中大于3微秒。另外,宽度大于1.5微秒的维持放电可以被施加到每个子场,但是所述脉冲被设置为施加到其中施加了小于15个维持放电脉冲的子场中。以这样的方式,降低了维持期的长度。
换句话说,控制器200按照每个子场的维持放电脉冲的总数而将多个子场划分为多个组。例如,多个组可以被划分为A组和B组,每个子场根据所述子场的维持放电脉冲的数量是大于还是等于用于确保在其终端足够的壁电荷的临界值SDPc而被分组在A组或B组中。例如,具有等于或小于15个脉冲的一个子场被分组到A组,具有大于15个脉冲的一个子场被分组在B组。然后,控制器200控制驱动器400,以便在A组的维持期期间被施加到维持电极X的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度变得大于其他维持放电脉冲的宽度。以这种方式,按照本发明的一个例证实施例,可以降低寻址放电延迟。
按照本发明的实施例,交替地具有电压Vs和0V的维持放电脉冲被施加到具有相反极性的扫描电极Y和维持电极X。但是,按照本发明的另一个实施例,也可以使用不同的维持放电。例如,当将维持电极X保持在0V时,可以向扫描电极Y和维持电极X施加交替地具有正电压Vs和负电压-Vs的维持放电脉冲。此时,在扫描电极Y和维持电极X之间的电压差与当施加交替地具有电压Vs和0V的维持放电脉冲时的电压差相同。在这种情况下,延长了被施加到扫描电极Y的-Vs的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度。
已经在此公开了本发明的例证实施例,虽然使用了特定的术语,但是仅仅在上位和说明的含义上使用和解释它们,而不是用于限定的目的。因此,本领域的技术人员可以明白,在不脱离在所附的权利要求中给出的本发明的精神和范围的情况下可以在形式和细节上进行各种改变。
Claims (19)
1.一种用于驱动等离子体显示装置的方法,所述等离子体显示装置具有多个第一电极和多个第二电极,用于驱动等离子体显示装置的一个帧被划分为多个子场,每个子场包括复位期、寻址期和维持期,所述方法包括,在多个子场的至少一个第一子场的维持期期间:
交错地向第一电极和第二电极施加多个维持放电脉冲以触发维持放电;并且
将被施加到第二电极的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度设置为大于其他维持放电脉冲的宽度。
2.按照权利要求1的方法,其中,在至少一个第一子场的维持期期间被施加的维持放电脉冲的总数小于维持放电脉冲的临界数量。
3.按照权利要求2的方法,其中,所述维持放电脉冲的临界数量是15。
4.按照权利要求2的方法,其中,所述被施加到第二电极的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度大于1.5微秒。
5.按照权利要求2的方法,其中,所述被施加到第二电极的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度大于3微秒。
6.按照权利要求1的方法,其中,在多个子场中的至少一个第二子场的维持期期间,被施加到第二电极的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度等于其他维持放电脉冲的宽度。
7.按照权利要求1的方法,其中,第一子场的维持期的最后维持放电脉冲被施加到第一电极。
8.按照权利要求7的方法,还包括:在紧接第一子场的维持期的复位期期间,在第一子场的维持期期间将最后维持放电脉冲施加到第一电极之后,逐渐地降低第一电极的电压。
9.按照权利要求8的方法,其中,所述第一电极是扫描电极,第二电极是维持电极。
10.一种等离子体显示装置,包括:
多个扫描电极;
多个维持电极;
控制器,将一个帧划分为多个子场,每个子场包括复位期、寻址期和维持期,并且将多个子场按照维持放电脉冲的数量来分组为多个组;以及
驱动电路,用于按照控制器的控制在维持期期间,向具有相反极性的扫描电极和维持电极施加维持放电脉冲,
其中,所述控制器将被施加到维持电极的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度设置为大于在多个组的第一组的维持期期间其他维持放电脉冲的宽度。
11.按照权利要求10的等离子体显示装置,其中,在第一组的维持期中,被施加到维持电极的最后维持放电脉冲大于1.5微秒。
12.按照权利要求11的等离子体显示装置,其中,被施加到第一组的每个子场的维持放电脉冲的总数小于被施加到第二组的每个子场的维持放电脉冲的总数。
13.按照权利要求12的等离子体显示装置,其中,被施加到第一组的每个子场的维持放电脉冲的数量小于15。
14.按照权利要求10的等离子体显示装置,其中,在紧接维持期的复位期期间,所述驱动电路初始化在维持期期间经历维持放电的放电单元。
15.按照权利要求14的等离子体显示装置,其中,在维持期期间的最后维持放电脉冲被施加到第一电极。
16.按照权利要求11的等离子体显示装置,其中,在紧接维持期的复位期期间,所述驱动电路初始化在维持期期间经历维持放电的放电单元。
17.按照权利要求12的等离子体显示装置,其中,在紧接维持期的复位期期间,所述驱动电路初始化在维持期期间经历维持放电的放电单元。
18.按照权利要求10的等离子体显示装置,其中,第一电极是扫描电极,第二电极是维持电极。
19.一种等离子体显示装置,包括:
多个第一电极;
多个第二电极;
控制器,将一个帧划分为多个子场,每个子场包括复位期、寻址期和维持期,并且将多个子场按照维持放电脉冲的数量来分组为多个组;以及
驱动电路,用于按照控制器的控制,向第一电极施加交替地具有正第一电压和负第二电压的维持放电脉冲,并且向第二电极施加第三电压,
其中,所述控制器将被施加到第一电极的最后维持放电脉冲的宽度设置为大于在多个组的第一组的维持期期间所选择的子场的其他维持放电脉冲的宽度。
