Description

有源矩阵显示装置
本发明涉及一种显示装置,它包含:在基板上的选择电极矩阵和数据电极矩阵,具有象素和至少在选择电极和数据电极的交叉区有第一类场效应晶体管。
此有源矩阵显示装置的实例是用在膝上型计算机和资源管理器中的薄膜晶体管液晶显示器(TFT-LCD)或有源矩阵液晶显示器(AM-LCD),但是它们在全球数字移动电话系统(GSM)电话中的应用也日益增多。
在许多便携式显示装置中存在着功率消耗问题。这种问题也发生于结构为反射式的显示装置中(其中避免了背光的功率消耗)。
在这种便携式应用中,液晶显示盒所需的驱动电压是由驱动集成电路(IC)来提供的,对它提供的电压通常是用(电容性的)电压倍增(升压)来获得的。常规的AM-LCD通常需要20-25伏量级的电压以驱动薄膜晶体管(TFT),而对熟知的光电效应如超扭曲液晶效应10伏或更小的电压就足够了。
本发明的目的是提供一种在开头段落中所描述的那种类型的显示装置,它的功率消耗较低以致用单节电池就能使用较长的时间。
为此目的,根据本发明的显示装置的特征在于它包括,在数据电极和象素之间串联的第一类型场效应晶体管,至少第二相反类型的第二场效应晶体管,连接到选择电极的一个场效应晶体管的栅极。
尽管在数据电极上的电压通常是可变的,但在本应用中描述的选择电极有时也被看成是供给固定电压(参考)的电极。
本发明是基于认识到:明显地,当使用多晶硅或甚至单晶硅时,第一类型的场效应晶体管和相反类型的第二类型的场效应晶体管(例如,p型和n型)都可以在一种和例如相同的玻璃或合成材料的基板之上制作。与只使用一种类型的场效应晶体管的常规的AM-LCD相比,由此可以实现大大降低功率消耗。明显地当使用液晶显示盒时,其中单元两端的极性在每一帧是变华的,很低的电压就足够了。本发明也可有利地用于其它类型的显示装置如基于(O)发光二极管(LED)或聚合物发光二极管的有源矩阵中。
在第一实施方案中,第一类型的场效应晶体管栅极连接到选择电极上。
根据本发明的进一步的实施方案的特征在于第二类型的第二场效应晶体管的栅极接到附加的选择电极上。以这种方式获得的该附加选择的可能性可以用不同的方法加以利用。例如,选择脉冲可以同时加到场效应晶体管的栅极上,但是显示装置也可包括供应选择脉冲给第一场效应晶体管的栅极并且将经过调节的(conditioned)选择脉冲供应给第二场效应晶体管的栅极的驱动设备。这个经过调节的供应提供了使(部分的)显示装置不工作(暂时的或非暂时的)的可能性或在低频使用它们从而能够更进一步降低消耗。
根据本发明的显示装置的另一种实施方案的特征在于第二类型的第二场效应晶体管的栅极连接到数据电极上。以这种方式,例如,根据存在的信息,可以使第二场效应晶体管导通或不导通。
参照下文所述实施方案,本发明的这些和其它方面是明显的并且将加以阐明。

图1是可应用本发明的显示装置1的电等效装置。它包括在m行或选择电极5和n列或数据电极6的交叉区的象素8的矩阵。该行电极通过行驱动器36依次地选择,而列电极则通过数据寄存器35供应数据。为此目的,如必要,进来的数据信号在处理器3中首先被处理。经过驱动线7进行相互同步。
在本实施方案中,象素8构成部分液晶显示装置。在常规的有源矩阵TFT技术中,与象素关联的TFT晶体管通过栅极上的选择脉冲被激活,而连接到TFT晶体管的源极的数据电极上的电压决定连接到漏极的图象电极(picture electrode)上的电压。按照本发明,数据电极6(图2)通过与第二相反类型(在此实施方案中为p型)的第二场效应晶体管12相串联的第一类型(在此实施方案中为n型)场效应晶体管11连接到象素上。TFT11的漏极连接到TFT12源极上而第一类型的第一场效应晶体管11的栅极连接到选择电极5上。在本实施方案中,第二场效应晶体管12的栅极连接到附加的选择电极4上。制造p型以及n型的TFT的适合的技术采用多晶硅晶体管(“高温多晶”或“低温多晶”)但也不排除使用单晶硅或其它半导体材料。晶体管12的漏极连接到象素8的电极19并且也连接到以常规方式装配的存储电容器15的一个极板上。存储电容器的另一个极板通过附加电极16连接到电压源17上。晶体管11、12和电极4、5、6、16存在于例如玻璃或合成材料的第一基板上。象素8的计数器电极20通过电极18连接到电压源17’上。在本实施方案中,对电压电源17、17’的电压选取的是同样的值。
在图2的实施方案中,选择电压Vg在选择期间供应给选择电极5(即给第一类型的第一场效应晶体管11的栅极),而在非选择期间在此选择电极上的电压是0伏。同时,0伏的选择电压在选择期馈给附加电极4(即供应给第二类型的第二场效应晶体管12的栅极),而该附加电极上的电压在非选择期是Vg。因此,两个晶体管11、12在选择期是导通的(假设TFT晶体管的阈电压近似为VTn=1.0V(n沟道TFT11和VTp=-1.0V(p沟道TFT12)。在非选择期(参看“保持态”)该两个晶体管都是切断的。
对于正的象素电压,在一个列电极6上的数据电压Vd是Vth≤Vd≤Vsat,式中Vth和Vsat分别是液晶的阈电压和饱和电压(见图3)。液晶材料的通常值是Vth=1.5V。对300∶1的对比度,在透射显示装置中的Vsat通常是4.5V。在反射显示装置中,特别是在所谓的自动应用和电话中,更小的对比度(例如,10∶1)就足够了,所以Vsat大概可以选取为3V电压。计数器电极18(和因此同样的附加线4)有电压VCE=0V。当选择线5接收电压Vg和附加电极同时接收0V电压,两个晶体管12、13将导通同时点2 1将充电到电压Vth≤VA≤Vsat以致象素电容Vp被充电到Vth≤Vp≤Vsat
在反射显示装置的实施方案中当象素有正值电压(此处,负的)时,必须写入下一帧(或下一行,依赖于驱动模式),计数器电极切换到电压VCE=Vsat+Vth即到4.5V。然后点2 1的电压增加到Vsat+2Vth≤VA≤2Vsat+Vth,这相应于6.0V≤VA≤7.5V。
以Vg=6V值,现在人们认为:如果电路只用n-沟道TFT作开关,电路维持截断,而当只用p-沟道TFT作开关电路开始导通,由于门在6V并且在点21处的象素接头能接收7.5V的电压所以晶体管12的漏极能起电源的作用。由于有n-型和p-型TFT的一连串排布,所以不能有电流流动。当有关的行被负写入,其中在该列的数据电压Vd’被再次选在区间Vth≤Vd’≤Vsat以维持全部电压范围尽可能小,然后点21的电压(VA)将是Vth≤VA≤Vsat和象素电压Vp将是VA-VCE,其中VCE=Vsat+Vth使得-Vsat≤Vp≤Vth
当在下一帧(或下一行)电压再次被正写入时,那么计数器电极20上(以及同样在附加线16上)的电压再次切换到0V。然后点21处的电压将是-Vsat≤VA≤-Vth。如果只用n-沟道TFT13,电路开始导通,但是n-型和p-型晶体管的串联布置现在也阻止发生导电。因此,门电压Vg的范围也被限于Vsat+2Vth,在相关的实施方案中大概是6V。
当信息在较长时间内不发生改变时图1、2的电路中的功率消耗会进一步降低。在此方面需要注意的是在每帧之后(或每行之后)数据需求不一定倒置。直流驱动模式是很可能的。在那种情况下,在驱动电路3,或在寄存器5的输入或输出端带有附加电路中,所能确定的是在列电极6中一个的数据Vd在多个连续的选择期间是不变的。于是该附加的电路被用于使附加电极在较小的频率(从Vg到0V)切换。然后画面信息在功耗较少的较低的频率被刷新。当存储电容器15有较高的电容量时信息就可以保持较长的时间。
在图4的实施方案中,在基于电致发光的显示装置中的两个互补的TFT晶体管的串联排列被用于给电容器15充电(对应于该画面信息值)。电容器15起存储元件的作用以及,同晶体管26一起,形成电流电源,根据加在点21上的电压,它决定通过晶体管26和因此通过象素((O)LED或(P)LED)25在选择期流动的电流。为此目的,例如,概略地表示的开关28在选择期间是接通的,使得电压源27提供给电流源15、26和在线29、30之间的发光二极管25的串联布置所需电压,使得发光二极管25以所需的强度发光。加在电容器15上的电压是由列电极6的数据电压决定的。然而,不但通过选择电极5的选择来决定供压而且通过门14附加电极24也应选择晶体管12。这可以由提供逆向脉冲来实现,与图1、2的实施方案相类似。电极24处的选择脉冲也可以以限定的方式提供,从而使信息能够出现在较低的频率。由于两个晶体管11、12串联,因此可以驱动逻辑电路,(这两个晶体管都具有与(AND)功能)。借助于装配一个有附加的门接头24’的晶体管(在此实施方案中为晶体管12)(或两个晶体管),驱动逻辑电路的几率甚至可以进一步扩大。由配置一个或更多的平行于晶体管11、12的晶体管,可以实现或(OR)功能。
根据本发明的一种完全不同的显示装置展示在图5中。三个n型晶体管11’、11”、11的电源连接到电极6上。晶体管11’、11”、111的漏极连接到关联的电容器31’、31’、31上,它们的电容量之比是4∶2∶1。电极36’、36’、36耦合到,例如,数字寄存器的输出,它的输出在选择期间传给栅极13(例如,通过与门)。根据寄存器上的数字值,晶体管11’、11”、11被导通或切断并且,根据这些数字值,在点35的电容器31’、31’、31的组合接收电压,该电压可以在0V和一个给定最大值之间假定8个值,所给定的最大值带有6个中间值(数字/模拟转换)。为预先除去电容器31上的电荷,将它们通过体管33并联到地,该晶体管的门受线34的控制。栅极36的反向信号被供应给线34。这也可以在通过门13选择之前,通过选择所有的晶体管和给线6加0V的电压,以数字信息产生放电。

当然本发明不局限于以上所述的实施方案。例如,如表述过的,可以用单晶晶体管代替多晶晶体管。如有必要,也可以使用双极晶体管。
本发明的保护范围并不限于所述的具体实施方案。本发明存在于每一个和所有新特征以及存在于每一个和所有特征特点的结合。在权利要求中的参考数字并不限制它们的保护范围。动词“包括”的使用以及它的变化不排除该权利要求所述的那些要素之外的要素的存在。在一个要素之前使用的冠词“a”或“an”不排除存在多个这样的要素。

1.一种显示装置(1),该装置包括在基板上的选择电极(5)和数据电极(6)的矩阵,具有象素和至少在选择电极和数据电极的交叉区的第一类场效应晶体管(11),其特征在于:显示装置包括,在数据电极和象素之间,串联第一类场效应晶体管(11),至少第二相反类型的第二场效应晶体管(12),该场效应晶体管的一个栅极与选择电极(5)相连接。
2.如权利要求1所要求的显示装置,其特征在于第一类场效应晶体管(11)的栅极(13)被连接到选择电极(5)。
3.如权利要求2所要求的显示装置,其特征在于第二类的第二场效应晶体管(12)的栅极(14)连接到附加的选择电极(4)上。
4.如权利要求1所要求的显示装置,其特征在于第二类的第二场效应晶体管(12)的栅极(14)连接到数据电极(6,24)上。
5.如权利要求3所要求的显示装置,其特征在于该显示装置包括驱动设备(3,7,35,36)以供应选择脉冲给该场效应晶体管的栅极。
6.如权利要求5所要求的显示装置,其特征在于选择脉冲同时供应给该场效应晶体管的栅极。
7.如权利要求4所要求的显示装置,其特征在于该显示装置包括驱动设备(3,7,35,36)以供应选择脉冲给第一场效应晶体管(11)的栅极和将经过调节的选择脉冲供应给第二场效应晶体管(12)的栅极。
8.如权利要求7所要求的显示装置,其特征在于第一场效应晶体管的选择脉冲的持续时间不同于第二场效应晶体管的选择脉冲的持续时间。
9.如权利要求7或8所要求的显示装置,其特征在于驱动设备包括暂时抑制至少一个场效应晶体管的选择脉冲的设备。
10.如权利要求8或9所要求的显示装置,其特征在于选择脉冲以不同的频率被供应给场效应晶体管的栅极。
11.如权利要求2中所要求的显示装置,其特征在于第二类的第二场效应晶体管的栅极连接到数据电极。
12.如权利要求1所要求的显示装置,其特征在于显示装置包括电容器(15),与象素电极相连接的电极。
13.如权利要求1所要求的显示装置,其特征在于象素至少包括在两个图象电极之间的液晶材料层。
14.如权利要求13所要求的显示装置,其特征在于该显示装置包括电容器(15),电容器(15)位于象素电极(19)与连接到电源电压(17)的终端的电极(16)之间。
15.如权利要求1所要求的显示装置,其特征在于该显示装置包括电容器(31),一个连接到第一类场效应晶体管和第二类场效应晶体管的公共点的电极。
16.如权利要求15所要求的显示装置,其特征在于该显示装置包括多个第一类场效应晶体管,这些第一类场效应晶体管位于选择电极和多个电容之间,这些电容与每一个第一类的场效应晶体管相关联。
17.如权利要求16所要求的显示装置,其特征在于选择电极连接到偏压。
18.如权利要求17所要求的显示装置,其特征在于该偏压是可变的。
19.如权利要求1所要求的显示装置,其特征在于象素至少包括一个与调节晶体管(26)相串连的发光元件(25)。
