Abstract

Description
많은 휴대용 디스플레이 디바이스에 있어서의 문제점은 전력 소모이다. 이 문제점은 디스플레이 디바이스가 {백라이트(backlight)를 위한 전력 소모를 막아주는} 반사 디스플레이 디바이스로 설계될 때에도 발생한다.
그러한 휴대용 애플리케이션에 있어서, 액정 디스플레이 셀을 위해 요구되는 구동 전압은 구동 IC에 의해 공급되는데, 상기 공급 전압은 대개 (용량성) 전압 곱셈(multiplication){전압 올리기(boosting)}에 의해 얻어진다. 종래의 AM-LCDs는 TFT 트랜지스터를 구동하기 위하여 대개 20 볼트 내지 25 볼트 정도의 전압을 필요로 하는 한편, 슈퍼트위스트 액정 효과와 같이 알려져 있는 전기-광학 효과에 대해서는 10 볼트 이하의 구동 전압으로 충분하다.
본 발명은 기판 위에, 선택 전극 및 데이터 전극의 매트릭스를 포함하고, 상기 선택 전극 및 데이터 전극의 교차 영역에 픽셀 및 적어도 하나의, 제 1 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터를 지닌 디스플레이 디바이스에 관한 것이다.
그러한 능동 매트릭스 디스플레이 디바이스의 예로는 랩탑 컴퓨터 및 오거나이저(organizers)에 사용되는 AM-LCDs 또는 TFT-LCDs가 있으나, 이것들은 GSM 전화에도 또한 점점 더 많이 사용되고 있다.

본 발명의 목적은 전제부에서 설명한 타입의 디스플레이 디바이스를 제공하는 것으로, 저 전력 소모를 하기 때문에 단일 배터리 부하(load)로도 오랫동안 쓸 수가 있다.
이 때문에, 본 발명에 따른 디스플레이 디바이스는 상기 디스플레이 디바이스가 데이터 전극과 픽셀 사이에, 제 1 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터와 직렬로, 적어도 하나의, 제 2의, 반대되는 타입의, 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터를 포함하며, 상기 전계 효과 트랜지스터 중 하나의 게이트 전극은 선택 전극에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 한다.
데이터 전극에서의 전압이 대개 가변성일지라도, 본 출원에서 설명한 선택 전극은 때때로 고정된 전압(기준)이 공급되는 전극이라고도 이해된다.
본 발명은 특히 다결정 실리콘 혹은 심지어 단결정 실리콘을 사용할 때, 제 1 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터 및 제 2의, 다른 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터(예를 들면, p 타입 및 n 타입 트랜지스터) 양자 모두, 예를 들면, 유리나 합성 물질로 된 하나의 동일한 기판 위에 제작될 수 있다는 인식에 근거한다. 단 한 가지 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터가 쓰인 종래의 AM-LCDs와 비교해 볼 때, 그로 인하여 상당한 전력 소모 감소가 실현될 수 있다. 셀에 걸린 극성(polarity)이 매 프레임에서 바뀌는 액정 디스플레이 셀을 사용할 때 특히, 매우 낮은 전압으로도 충분하다. 본 발명은 또한, (O) LEDs나 폴리머 LEDs에 기초한 능동 매트릭스와 같은 디스플레이 디바이스의 다른 타입에 대해서 유리하게 사용될 수도 있다.
제 1 실시예에서, 제 1 타입의 제 1 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극은 선택 전극으로 연결된다.
본 발명에 따른 디스플레이 디바이스의 추가 실시예는, 제 2 타입의 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극이 여분의 선택 전극에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 한다. 이 같은 방식으로 얻은 여분의 선택 가능성은 서로 다른 방식으로 활용될 수 있다. 예컨대, 선택 펄스는 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극에 동시에 인가될 수 있으나, 디스플레이 디바이스는 제 1 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극에 선택 펄스를 공급하기 위한 그리고 선택 펄스를 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극에 조건부 공급하기 위한 구동 수단도 포함할 수 있다. 이러한 조건부 공급은 디스플레이 디바이스(의 일부)를 (일시적으로 또는 일시적이지 않게) 작동 못하게 할 가능성 또는 상기 디스플레이 디바이스를 더 낮은 주파수에서 사용하여 낭비가 훨씬 더 줄게 할 가능성을 제공한다.
본 발명에 따른 디스플레이 디바이스의 또 다른 실시예는 제 2 타입의 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극이 데이터 전극에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 한다. 이 같은 방법으로, 예를 들면, 정보의 존재에 따라, 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터가 턴 온 되거나 턴 온 되지 않는 것이 달성될 수 있다.
본 발명의 이러한 양상 및 이와 다른 양상은 이 후 설명되는 실시예로부터 분명해지고 실시예를 참조하여 설명되어질 것이다.
도 1은 본 발명을 적용할 수 있는 디스플레이 디바이스(1)의 전기적 등가를 나타낸 것이다. 상기 디스플레이 디바이스는 m개의 행의 선택 전극(5)과 n개의 열 의 데이터 전극(6)이 교차하는 영역에 픽셀(8)의 매트릭스를 포함한다. 행 전극은 행 구동기(36)를 통해 연속적으로 선택되는 동안, 열 전극에는 데이터 레지스터(35)를 통해 데이터가 공급된다. 이 때문에, 인입 데이터 신호(2)는 필요하다면, 프로세서(3)에서 먼저 처리된다. 구동 라인(7)을 통해 상호 동기화가 발생한다.

이 같은 디바이스의 추가 장점은 전극(6)에서의 전압이 액정(또는 LEDs)의 특성에 따라{스케일링(scalable) 가능한 D/A 변환}, 조정될 수 있다는 점이다. 이어서, 트랜지스터(12)를 선택함으로써, 전압이 포인트(35)로 전달되고, 그로 인해 픽셀에 걸린 전압(및 투과 또는 반사)을 한정한다.
물론, 본 발명은 상술한 실시예에 한정되지는 않는다. 설명한 바와 같이, 예를 들면, 다결정(polycrystalline) 트랜지스터 대신에 단결정(monocrystalline) 트랜지스터가 사용될 수 있다. 만약 필요하다면, 바이폴라 트랜지스터를 사용하는 것도 가능하다.
본 발명의 보호 범위는 설명한 실시예에 한정되지는 않는다. 본 발명은 각각의 그리고 모든 신규한 특징적인 주안점 및 특징적인 주안점 각각의 그리고 모든 조합에 귀속된다. 청구 범위에 있는 참조 번호는 청구 범위의 보호 범위를 한정하지 않는다. 동사 "포함하는" 및 그 활용형의 사용은 청구 범위에서 기술한 것 이외의 요소의 존재를 배제하지 않는다. 요소에 선행하는 단수적 표현은 그러한 요소가 복수 존재함을 배제하지 않는다.
상술한 바와 같이, 본 발명은 기판 위에, 선택 전극 및 데이터 전극의 매트릭스를 포함하고, 상기 선택 전극 및 데이터 전극의 교차 영역에 픽셀 및 적어도 하나의, 제 1 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터를 지닌 디스플레이 디바이스에 이용된다.
Claims (19)
- 기판 위에, 선택 전극(5)과 데이터 전극(6)의 매트릭스를 포함하며, 상기 선택 전극과 데이터 전극의 교차 영역에 픽셀 및 적어도 하나의, 제 1 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터(11)를 지닌 디스플레이 디바이스(1)로서,상기 디스플레이 디바이스는 상기 데이터 전극과 상기 픽셀 사이에, 상기 제 1 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터(11)와 직렬로, 적어도 하나의, 제 2의, 다른 타입의 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터(12)를 포함하며, 상기 전계 효과 트랜지스터 중 하나의 게이트 전극은 선택 전극(들)(5)에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 제 1 타입의 제 1 전계 효과 트랜지스터(11)의 게이트 전극(13)은 상기 선택 전극(5)에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 2 항에 있어서, 상기 제 2 타입의 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터(12)의 게이트 전극(14)은 여분의 선택 전극(4)에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 제 2 타입의 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터(12)의 게이트 전극(14)은 데이터 전극(6,24)에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 3 항에 있어서, 상기 디스플레이 디바이스는 상기 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극에 선택 펄스를 공급하기 위한 구동 수단(3,7,35,36)을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 5 항에 있어서, 상기 선택 펄스는 상기 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극에 동시에 공급되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 4 항에 있어서, 상기 디스플레이 디바이스는 상기 제 1 전계 효과 트랜지스터(11)의 게이트 전극에 선택 펄스를 공급하기 위한 그리고 상기 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터(12)의 게이트 전극에 선택 펄스를 조건부로 공급(conditioned supply)하기 위한 구동 수단(3,7,35,36)을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 7 항에 있어서, 상기 제 1 전계 효과 트랜지스터를 위한 선택 펄스는 상기 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터를 위한 선택 펄스와는 지속 시간에 있어 달리하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 7 항 또는 제 8 항에 있어서, 상기 구동 수단은 상기 전계 효과 트랜지스터 중 적어도 하나의 선택 펄스를 일시적으로 억누르기(suppressing) 위한 수단을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 8 항 또는 제 9 항에 있어서, 상기 선택 펄스는 상기 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극에 서로 다른 주파수로 공급되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 2 항에 있어서, 상기 제 2 타입의 제 2 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 게이트 전극은 데이터 전극에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 디스플레이 디바이스는 커패시터(15)를 포함하며, 상기 커패시터의 전극은 상기 픽셀의 전극에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 픽셀은 두 개의 화상 전극 사이에 적어도 하나의, 액정 물질로 된 층을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 13 항에 있어서, 상기 디스플레이 디바이스는 상기 픽셀의 전극(19)과 전력 공급 전압(17)의 단자에 연결된 전극(16) 사이에 커패시터(15)를 포함하는 것을특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 디스플레이 디바이스는 커패시터(31)를 포함하며, 상기 커패시터의 전극은 상기 제 1 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터와 상기 제 2 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 공통 포인트에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 15 항에 있어서, 상기 디스플레이 디바이스는 상기 선택 전극과 상기 제 1 타입의 각 전계 효과 트랜지스터와 연관된 복수의 커패시턴스 사이에 복수의, 상기 제 1 타입의 전계 효과 트랜지스터를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 16 항에 있어서, 상기 선택 전극은 바이어스 전압에 연결되는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 17 항에 있어서, 상기 바이어스 전압은 가변성(variable)인 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 상기 픽셀은 조정 트랜지스터(26)와 직렬인, 적어도 하나의 발광 소자(25)를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 디스플레이 디바이스.
