发明背景
可以根据需要改变的衣物有很多应用。如果现代织物能够根据需要改变颜色,那么消费者可以大幅减少他或她一生中购买的衣物制品的数量。例如,不再需要拥有三件几乎相同的剪裁但颜色不同的上衣。消费者可以根据事件、季节等简单地选择所需的颜色(或图案)。通过这种方式,变色织物可以大大减少衣物对环境的影响。据估计,美国人目前每年将约1400万吨的衣物丢弃到垃圾填埋场。此外,在每个新的时尚季节更换这些衣物都是大量占用资源的——不管织物的来源,例如棉、羊毛或石化产品。变色衣物的其他应用包括迷彩和运动服。例如,棒球队不再需要两套不同的制服,其颜色可以根据球队是主场还是客场而改变。

发明概述
本发明通过提供可根据需要在颜色之间转换的柔性纤维克服了现有技术的缺点。可以通过编织、针织、刺绣、热成形或铺垫将该纤维掺入到织物中。可以将该纤维掺入其他材料中,以达到应用要求的强度、透气性或拉伸性。当提供合适的电场时,纤维的颜色将转换。因为颜料是双稳态的,所以不必提供恒定的电源来保持颜色状态。而是,一旦织物被转换,它就可以长时间稳定,例如几天或几周。

本发明提供了可以掺入纺织品和其他材料中的柔性变色纤维。将电子元件包括在纤维(即线电极)中的能力对于获得实用且经济的基于纤维的显示器是有用的。先前许多基于纤维的显示器或转换织物的制造尝试需要大量的在电极和功能性电泳材料之间的介电结构材料。所述的发明使得这种复杂的结构是不必要的。

当将根据本发明的各个实施方案的纤维施加到成品织物上时,诸如刺绣方法,纵横比对于控制纤维的取向也很重要。例如,具有矩形截面的弯曲的纤维可能扭曲。如果优选的是变色纤维的观察表面保持与下面的织物相对平行,则这可能是不期望的。在这种情况下,有益的是,纤维具有接近于正方形的横截面或矩形的横截面,其中当从正常观察侧观察时,纤维的深度大于宽度,以减少织物中纤维发生任何不期望的扭曲的可能性。
每根柔性纤维包括至少两个沿其长度方向延伸并尽可能靠近腔体的导电线电极,而不损害壁机械地约束线电极的能力。线电极可以由钨、银、铜或其他具有良好延展性的导电材料形成。电极横截面形状可以是圆形、矩形或其他将优化跨电光介质的电场的均匀性的形状。一根或一组导线位于腔体的观察侧,另一根或一组导线位于腔体的相对侧。当导线的端部连接到电源时,可以跨腔体产生电势,从而导致电子油墨的光学状态发生变化。导线应尽可能小,同时保持足够的机械强度,以经受住纤维制造过程。在本发明的实施方案中,钨丝的直径可以为100μm或更小,优选直径为50μm或更小,更优选直径为25μm或更小。较小直径的纤维的光学益处是显著的,因为对于400微米宽的腔体,两根50微米的导线将遮蔽切换区域的25%,而25微米的导线将仅遮蔽切换区域的12.5%。另外,较小直径的纤维更具机械柔韧性,这使得纤维中的较薄机械材料包括导线,并极大地增加了制造纤维时可能的柔韧性。纤维可以无限长,例如1米或更长,例如10米或更长,例如100米或更长。

如上所述,根据本发明的各个实施方案的纤维的电极可以包含铜。例如,铜比钨具有较低的模量,因此铜线将比等效直径的钨线更具柔韧性。这种柔韧性具有次要效果,即需要较少的聚合材料在机械上保持导线,从而使导线相对较细。当纤维弯曲时,具有较低模量的铜线对周围的聚合物纤维材料施加的力较小,这导致弯曲时纤维具有更好的机械强度。更高的机械强度是优选的,因为如果导线在弯曲过程中穿过纤维的聚合材料,则导线很可能跨越纤维的腔体并与设备中的另一根电极线形成电接触。跨越腔体的电极之间的接触会产生电短路,这导致纤维失去转换性能,并在许多情况下完全失去转换的能力。
在图5中所示的本发明的另一个实施方案中,用于将导线机械地约束到纤维中的聚合物材料的电特性被改变以使跨腔体中的电泳介质的电场最大化。具体地,结构聚合物如聚碳酸酯填充有超过渗透阈值的导电材料如碳,使得所得的聚合物/碳共混材料52a、52b、52c、52d变得导电。适用于纤维形成的多种聚合物材料可以填充有导电材料,并且多种导体可以用作导电填料。导电聚碳酸酯(CPC)材料52a、52b、52c、52d可以设置在导线54a、54b、54c、54d和中空纤维50的腔体56之间,如图5所示。优选地,CPC材料至少在纤维的观察侧上的宽度大约等于导线的直径,因为导电材料是不透明的并且可能遮蔽电泳介质。如果中空纤维材料和CPC材料都是热塑性塑料,则可以使用堆叠和热压方法将CPC材料集成到预成形件中。例如,根据一种加工方法,形成中空纤维的非导电聚碳酸酯和导电聚碳酸酯材料的复合物可以在压力和/或热下熔融在一起。与缺少任何导电材料的聚碳酸酯相比,CPC实现纤维在较低的电压下切换。图6是具有这种布置的纤维的白色和深色状态的照片。从照片中可以明显看出,通过使用较小直径的导线和更窄的CPC条带可以改善光学性能,从而减少腔体中的电泳材料的遮盖。在一些实施方案中,纤维可以包含CPC材料和铜电极。
变色纤维的视觉影响与光学填充系数成正比,光学填充系数是当从外部观察纤维时,变色介质实际可见的纤维面积或宽度的分数。理想情况下,此光学填充系数应为100%,以最大程度地提高视觉效果。在变色介质的顶部上存在不透明的材料(例如,导线)以及包含变色介质所需的非活性壁材料降低了光学填充系数。为了提高光学填充系数,根据本发明一些实施方案的纤维可以包括提供透镜效应的特征。如本文在整个说明书和权利要求书中所使用的,术语“透镜效应”意指能够使光弯曲以遮盖非活性区域并使变色纤维的活性区域的外观最大化的特征。
可以通过在两种不同的透明材料之间的界面处的光折射来实现透镜效应。为了使光线弯曲,需要两个条件:(1)两种材料需要具有不同的折射率,并且(2)观察方向与界面平面之间的角度需要不同于90°。提供透镜效应的简单纤维几何形状的实例在图7中提供。纤维70具有两个顶部斜切角72a、72b,它们与顶表面成大约45°角。透射通过纤维70的折射光74a、74b、74c在纤维70与外部空气之间的界面处继续不偏转。透射通过成角度的角区域72a、72b的折射光以有效地增加具有等于内部腔体中的实际宽度(WA)的活性介质76的表观宽度(WL)的方式偏转。结果,从纤维70的外部可见更多的活性介质和更少的非活性壁78a、78b。因此,根据本发明的各种实施方案的纤维可包括一个或多个斜切边缘。例如,对于用在从任一侧都可以看到织物的应用中的变色织物,根据本发明的实施例制造的纤维90可以具有四个斜切边缘92a、92b、92c、92d,如图8所示。
图9示出了根据本发明另一实施方案的具有更复杂的透镜效应的纤维结构。该结构包括斜切边缘83a、83b和在纤维80的顶部部分中的弯曲表面81a、81b、81c。斜切边缘83a、83b减小了从纤维80的外部可见的非活动壁85a、85b的一部分,并且弯曲表面81a、81b、81c通过将每个弯曲表面81a,81b,81c的端部定位在线电极84a,84b的区域内而减小了存在于包含电泳介质的腔体87顶部的两个电极84a、84b的可见性。
在本发明的优选实施方案中,变色纤维100可以包含CPC材料102a,其跨越包含电泳介质104的腔体的非观察侧的宽度,如图10所示。可以将单根铜线106a放置在跨越电泳介质104的非观察面的宽度的CPC材料102下方并接触,这将纤维100中的导线106a、106b、106c的总数减少到三根,并增强纤维100的整体柔韧性。在纤维100的观察侧,有两个铜电极106b、106c,它们与电泳介质104的任一边缘的距离设置为大约等于电泳介质104宽度的1/4,以增强电光转换性能,并且CPC材料102b、102c设置在导线106b、106c和包含电泳介质104的腔体之间。此实施方案的纤维100还具有用于增强透镜效应的成形的角108a,108b。导线、铜线、CPC、透镜和跨越CPC非观察侧电极的几何定位优化相结合,形成具有增强的柔韧性、增强的电光转换性能和低电压操作的纤维。
斜切边缘的引入是能够提供透镜效应的一个特征。供选择地,可以通过在纤维上涂覆透光折射材料以在下面的纤维和涂层之间的界面处引起光的折射来实现透镜化。涂层和纤维的折射率应有所不同,并且界面平面与两种材料之间的观察方向之间的夹角应小于90°。
在某些应用中,例如服装用纺织品,纤维可能经受高机械应力,例如过度弯曲、扭结或压扁。即使纤维局部损坏,也希望整个长度的连续纤维保持功能。为了防止这种损坏,根据本发明的实施方案制造的纤维可以包括阻挡层,以减小顶部电极和底部电极之间电短路的可能性。例如在图11中,通过存在在顶部导电材料110a、110b(导线+导电聚合物)和底部导电材料114(导线+导电材料)之间的电绝缘层112来降低电短路的风险。阻挡层可以由绝缘聚合物材料例如聚碳酸酯制成。供选择地,阻挡层可以由部分导电的聚合物材料制成,该材料的导电率大于聚碳酸酯的导电率,但是低于导电聚碳酸酯(CPC)的导电率。
在图2中描绘了制造变色纤维的过程。大体上,制备在非极性溶剂中包含带电颜料颗粒的电光介质20,并且使用微注射器24注入电光介质20,例如,将其引入具有内部腔体和至少两个线电极的纤维22中,该至少两个线电极可跨纤维22提供电梯度。一旦纤维22充满电光介质20,就可以用粘合剂密封纤维20。填充纤维的替代的方法可能更适合于生产长度超过100米的连续纤维,该方法是:首先准备部分拉伸的纤维,该纤维的内部腔体大于腔体的预期最终尺寸,然后将油墨插入中等尺寸纤维的腔体中,然后最后使用拉伸塔或纤维拉制系统将纤维拉伸到最终尺寸。这可以避免与使粘性流体流过小腔体并经过长的长度相关的长的填充时间。通常,线电极要比纤维留的长。这些导线“辫子”可以成为电连接到驱动电路的基础。供选择地,可以烧蚀、剥除或切割纤维壁以建立与线电极的连接。一旦制成纤维,就可以将它们例如引入编织布30中,如图3所示,并电连接至电子驱动器32,以转换编织布30内纤维的光学状态。特别地,因为本发明的纤维的横截面是矩形的,所以它们可以排列成具有在织物中向外展示的相同面。当然,也可以将这些变色纤维集成到各种其他编织材料中,这些材料可用于室内设计元素、建筑、寻路等。
术语“双稳态的”和“双稳态性”在本文中以其在本领域中的常规含义使用,以指代包括具有至少一种光学性质不同的第一和第二显示状态的显示元件的显示器,并且使得在通过有限持续时间的寻址脉冲驱动任何给定元件以呈现其第一显示状态或第二显示状态之后,在寻址脉冲终止之后,该状态将持续改变显示元件的状态所需的寻址脉冲最小持续时间的至少几倍,例如至少四倍。在第7,170,670号美国专利中示出了一些基于颗粒的能显示灰阶的电泳显示器不仅在其极端的黑色和白色状态下而且在其中间的灰度状态下都是稳定的,并且对于某些其他类型的电光显示器也是如此。这种类型的显示器被适当地称为“多稳态的”而不是双稳态的,但是为了方便起见,术语“双稳态的”在本文中可以用来覆盖双稳态的和多稳态的显示器两者。
麻省理工学院(MIT)和E Ink Corporation或以其名义申请的许多专利和申请描述了用于封装电泳和其他电光介质的各种技术。这种封装的介质包括许多小囊,每个小囊本身包括内相和包围该内相的囊壁,所述内相在流体介质中包含电泳移动的颗粒。以下列出的专利和申请中描述的某些材料和技术与制造本文所述的可变化的传输装置有关,包括:

电光介质包含在悬浮流体中的带电的颜料颗粒。在本发明的可变传输介质中使用的流体通常将具有低介电常数(优选小于10,并且期望小于3)。特别优选的溶剂包括脂族烃,例如庚烷、辛烷和石油馏出物如(Exxon Mobil)或(Total)。
带电的颜料颗粒可以具有多种颜色和组成。另外,带电的颜料颗粒可以用表面聚合物官能化以提高状态稳定性。这样的颜料在第2016/0085132号的美国专利公开文件中描述,其通过引用整体并入本文。例如,如果带电颗粒为白色,则它们可以由诸如TiO2、ZrO2、ZnO、Al2O3、Sb2O3、BaSO4、PbSO4等的无机颜料形成。它们也可以是具有高折射率(>1.5)且具有一定尺寸(>100nm)以显示白色的聚合物颗粒,或者是被设计成具有期望折射率的复合颗粒。黑色带电颗粒,它们可以由CI颜料黑26或28或类似物(例如铁锰黑尖晶石或铜铬黑尖晶石)或炭黑形成。其他颜色(非白色和非黑色)可以由有机颜料形成,如CI颜料PR254、PR122、PR149、PG36、PG58、PG7、PB28、PB15:3、PY83、PY138、PY150、PY155或PY20。其他实例包括Clariant Hostaperm红D3G 70-EDS、Hostaperm粉E-EDS、PV坚牢红D3G、Hostaperm红D3G70、Hostaperm蓝B2G-EDS、Hostaperm黄H4G-EDS、Novoperm黄HR-70-EDS、Hostaperm绿GNX、BASF Irgazine红L 3630、Cinquasia红L 4100HD和Irgazin红L 3660HD;Sun Chemical酞菁蓝、酞菁绿、二芳基苯胺黄或AAOT二芳基苯胺黄。彩色颗粒也可以由无机颜料形成,如CI颜料蓝28、CI颜料绿50、CI颜料黄227等。带电颗粒的表面可以通过已知技术基于所需颗粒的电荷极性和电荷水平进行修饰,如第6,822,782、7,002,728、9,366,935和9,372,380号美国专利以及第2014-0011913的美国专利公开文件中所述,其全部内容通过引用整体并入本文。
颗粒可以表现出天然电荷,或者可以使用电荷控制剂明确地带电,或者当悬浮在溶剂或溶剂混合物中时可以获取电荷。合适的电荷控制剂在本领域中是众所周知的;它们本质上可以是聚合的或非聚合的,或者可以是离子的或非离子的。电荷控制剂的实例可包括但不限于Solsperse 17000(活性聚合物分散剂)、Solsperse 9000(活性聚合物分散剂)、OLOA 11000(琥珀酰亚胺无灰分散剂)、Unithox 750(乙氧基化物)、Span 85(脱水山梨糖醇三油酸酯)、Petronate L(磺酸钠)、Alcolec LV30(大豆卵磷脂)、Petrostep B100(石油磺酸盐)或B70(磺酸钡)、Aerosol OT、聚异丁烯衍生物或聚(乙烯共丁烯)衍生物等。除了悬浮流体和带电的颜料颗粒外,内相还可以包括稳定剂、表面活性剂和电荷控制剂。当带电颜料颗粒分散在溶剂中时,稳定材料可以吸附在带电颜料颗粒上。这种稳定材料保持颗粒彼此分离,从而当颗粒处于分散状态时,可变传输介质基本上是不透射的。如本领域中已知的,可以通过使用表面活性剂来辅助将带电颗粒(如上所述,通常为炭黑)分散在低介电常数的溶剂中。这样的表面活性剂通常包含与溶剂相容或可溶于溶剂的极性“头部基团”和非极性“尾部基团”。在本发明中,优选非极性尾部基团是饱和或不饱和烃部分,或可溶于烃溶剂的另一基团,例如聚(二烷基硅氧烷)。极性基团可以是任何极性有机官能团,包括离子材料,例如铵盐、磺酸盐或膦酸盐,或酸性或碱性基团。特别优选的头部基团是羧酸或羧酸酯基团。适用于本发明的稳定剂包括聚异丁烯和聚苯乙烯。在一些实施方案中,添加分散剂,如聚异丁烯琥珀酰亚胺和/或脱水山梨醇三油酸酯,和/或2-己基癸酸。
实施例
在具有四个内部钨线电极和矩形横截面的聚碳酸酯纤维中填充电光介质,该介质包含和功能化的二氧化钛以及黑色尖晶石颗粒。纤维约为0.8mm×0.5mm(外部),内部腔体约为0.4mm×0.2mm。一侧的两个线电极耦合到电源,而另两个线电极接地。通过向线电极提供100-500V之间的+/-电压信号,纤维可以在白色和黑色之间切换。(通常,颗粒将在+/-100V的电压下转换,但是转换在更高的电压下明显更快。)图4示出了在白色(左)和黑色(右)之间转换的纤维的可见光显微镜图像。重复转换至少100次,纤维或电光介质没有任何退化。另外,在合适的电压波形下,纤维将表现出双稳态性。使用这样的波形,使图4所示类型的纤维颜色稳定超过三天。
从前述内容可以看出,本发明可以提供变色纤维,其可以被集成到纺织品和其他材料中。对于本领域技术人员将显而易见的是,在不脱离本发明的范围的情况下,可以对上述本发明的特定实施方案进行许多改变和修改。因此,整个前述描述以说明性而非限制性的意义来解释。
Claims (18)
1.一种柔性变色纤维,其包括:
中空纤维,其包括至少两根被集成到所述中空纤维的壁中的电绝缘的导线;和
设置在所述中空纤维内部的电光介质,所述电光介质包含非极性溶剂和第一带电颜料颗粒。
2.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述电光介质包含第二带电颜料颗粒,所述第二带电颜料颗粒具有与所述第一带电颜料颗粒不同的电荷和颜色。
3.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述中空纤维包含聚合物。
4.权利要求3所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述聚合物包括聚碳酸酯。
5.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述中空纤维包括矩形横截面和四根电绝缘的导线。
6.权利要求5所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述导线位于从中空纤维的壁内边缘向内的较大内部尺寸的宽度的大约1/4处。
7.权利要求5所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述矩形横截面的宽高比至少为1.2:1。
8.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述导线包含钨。
9.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述导线包含铜。
10.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其进一步包括在所述至少两根电绝缘的导线之间的绝缘层。
11.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其进一步包含提供透镜效应的一个或多个特征。
12.权利要求11所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述特征包括斜切边缘。
13.权利要求11所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述特征包括围绕所述纤维的外表面的至少一部分的折射涂层。
14.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其进一步包括在所述至少两根电绝缘的导线中的至少一根与所述电光介质之间的导电材料。
15.权利要求14所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述导电材料包含碳。
16.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述非极性溶剂为烃的混合物。
17.权利要求1所述的柔性变色纤维,其中所述非极性溶剂包含电荷控制剂。
18.一种织物,其包含权利要求1所述的变色纤维。
