技术领域
本发明涉及平板显示器和驱动平板显示器的方法,尤其涉及能节省制造成本并允许各种类型的抖动掩模(dither mask)被应用的平板显示器及驱动该平板显示器的方法。
背景技术
最近,存在各种类型的与阴极射线管相比具有减小的重量和体积的平板显示装置。平板显示装置可以采取液晶显示器、场发射显示器、等离子体显示面板及有机发光显示装置等形式。
在这些平板显示装置中,有机发光显示装置利用有机发光二极管(OLED)显示图像,该OLED由于电子和空穴的复合而发光。有机发光显示装置具有快响应速度并且在低功耗下被驱动。
通常,通过将预定电压充入包含在有机发光显示装置的每个像素中的存储电容器Cst,并通过向OLED提供与所充的电压对应的电流,这些像素显示图像。这叫做模拟驱动方法。然而,在这种方法中,因为表示的灰度级数与存储在存储电容器Cst中的电压的精度相关,所以灰度级表示有限制。另外,由于包括在每个像素中的驱动晶体管的阈值电压和迁移率变化,显示一致的图像是困难的。
为了解决以上讨论的问题,数字驱动方法被提出。在该数字驱动方法中,与接通或断开对应的数据信号被提供给每个像素,并且像素的接通时间在包含在每帧中的多个子帧周期期间被控制。为了表示各个灰度级,每个像素被接通的时间被控制。
然而,在数字驱动方法中,灰度级表示被包含在一帧中的子帧的数目限制。为了解决此问题,利用一个或多个抖动掩模来增加灰度级的方法被使用。
通过不考虑输入数据而另外选择发光和不发光像素,抖动掩模被用于增加灰度级并提高假轮廓噪声(false contour noise)。这里,如果灰度级利用一个抖动掩模被增加,那么规则图样(抖动噪声)可由抖动掩模产生并可由用户观看。为了解决此问题,在每个连续帧期间,多个抖动掩模应该被交替使用。然而,如果多个抖动掩模被包括在有机发光显示装置中,那么系统需要的存储器被增加,并且相应地,制造成本被增加。
发明内容
一种方案在于一种平板显示器,包括:存储抖动掩模的查找表(LUT);以及抖动单元,该抖动单元被配置成基于存储在所述LUT中的所述抖动掩模产生至少一个另外的抖动掩模,以及在每个连续帧周期期间将不同的抖动掩模应用于图像数据以产生抖动后数据;其中所述抖动后数据的被感知的灰度级数大于所述图像数据的被感知的灰度级数。所述显示器还包括子帧映射单元,该子帧映射单元被配置成将所述抖动后数据映射到包含在一帧中的多个子帧数据图样,以及输出映射后数据。
另一方案在于一种驱动平板显示器的方法。所述方法包括:将抖动掩模存储在查找表(LUT)中;利用存储的抖动掩模产生至少一个另外的抖动掩模;在每个帧周期期间利用不同的抖动掩模使数据抖动;将抖动后数据映射到包含在一帧中的多个子帧图样;以及利用映射后数据产生数据信号。

下文中,将参考附图描述特定的示例性实施例。当描述第一元件被连接至第二元件时,第一元件不仅可以直接被连接至第二元件,而且可以通过第三元件被间接连接至第二元件。另外,对于完全理解本发明不重要的一些元件被省略。而且,同样的附图标记通常始终表示同样的元件。
图1为示出根据实施例的平板显示器的框图。
参考图1,平板显示器包括抖动单元(dithering unit)10、子帧映射单元20、数据驱动单元30、扫描驱动单元50、面板40及查找表(look-up table)60(下文中,指“LUT”)。
一个抖动掩模被存储在LUT 60中。因为一个抖动掩模被存储在LUT 60中,所以存储器需求得到减少,并且相应地制造成本被节省。
抖动单元10接收数据。抖动单元10利用抖动掩模执行抖动,从而如上所述的增加灰度级。例如,抖动单元10在子帧周期期间另外选择被接通和/或断开的像素。因为感知的灰度级通过抖动单元10被增加,所以假轮廓噪声得到提高。
抖动单元10利用存储在LUT 60中的一个抖动掩模另外产生一个或多个抖动掩模。抖动单元10在每个连续的帧周期应用不同的抖动掩模,以使抖动噪声最小化。稍后将描述抖动单元10的详细的结构。
子帧映射单元20将从抖动单元10提供的数据映射到子帧数据图样,然后输出映射后的数据。
数据驱动单元30锁存来自子帧映射单元20的每位数据,然后在每个水平周期期间提供被锁存的数据作为数据信号给面板40的数据线D1至Dm。
在子帧周期的每个水平周期,扫描驱动单元50顺次提供扫描信号给扫描线S1至Sn。然后,针对每条水平线,像素(未示出)被顺次选择,并且数据信号被提供给被选择的像素。
面板40包括分别被布置在数据线D1至Dm与扫描线S1至Sn的交叉点附近的像素。根据数据信号,像素在子帧周期期间通过发光或不发光显示图像。
图2为示出图1中所示的抖动单元10的实施例的框图。
参考图2,抖动单元10的实施例包括抖动模块12(dither module)和计算器14。
抖动模块12利用从计算器14提供的抖动掩模另外选择被接通和/或断开的像素。
在每个连续的帧周期期间,计算器14向抖动模块12提供不同的抖动掩模。为此,计算器14利用存储在LUT 60中的抖动掩模另外产生至少一个抖动掩模。然后,由计算器14产生的抖动掩模和存储在LUT 60中的抖动掩模被提供给抖动模块12,以便在每个连续的帧周期期间不同的抖动掩模能被应用。
计算器14的操作将在另外的细节中描述。图3中所示的抖动掩模首先被存储在LUT 60中。这里,存储在LUT 60中的抖动掩模被确定,以便灰度级能被稳定地增加。实际上,本领域已知的各种类型的抖动掩模可以被存储在LUT 60中。
计算器14利用存储在LUT 60中的抖动掩模产生另外的抖动掩模。例如,计算器14利用下列表达式1表示的“k”产生另外的抖动掩模。

在表达式1中,“i”指存储在LUT 60中的抖动掩模的列的数目,而“j”指存储在LUT 60中的抖动掩模的行的数目。因为在图3中所示的实施例中,“i”和“j”都为8,所以“k”为65。通过从包含在存储于LUT 60的抖动掩模中的所有数中减去“k”,计算出“k”的值的计算器14产生图4中所示的新的抖动掩模。
如图5和图6所示,通过交换关于存储在LUT 60中的抖动掩模的一个或多个对角线对称的数,计算器14可以产生新的抖动掩模。
如图7和图8所示,通过交换关于存储在LUT 60中的抖动掩模的横向中心轴和/或纵向中心轴对称的数,计算器14可以产生新的抖动掩模。也就是说,本发明的计算器14可以利用存储在LUT 60中的一个抖动掩模产生至少一个新的抖动掩模。
通过在每个连续的帧周期期间应用不同的抖动掩模,抖动模块12增加灰度级。例如,通过在每个连续的帧周期期间交替应用图3至图8中所示的六个抖动掩模,抖动模块12能增加灰度级。
图9为示出显示器所使用的产生并将抖动掩模应用于图像数据的方法100的实施例的流程图。在步骤110,诸如图1的抖动单元10之类的抖动单元接收抖动掩模的数据。在一些实施例中,抖动掩模从另一源中被接收到。
在步骤120,利用接收到的抖动掩模,产生另外的抖动掩模。在一些实施例中,通过对接收到的抖动掩模的数据执行算法运算,产生另外的抖动掩模。例如,可以使用与接收到的抖动掩模相同的数据,其中另外的抖动掩模的各个数据具有与接收到的掩模不同的排列。例如,上述的计算器14交换关于抖动掩模的轴对称的数据。在一些实施例中,通过加上常量并对接收到的抖动掩模的每个数据执行模数运算,产生另外的抖动掩模。可以执行各种其它的运算,以产生另外的抖动掩模。
在步骤130,将至少两个不同的抖动掩模应用于图像数据以达到期望的抖动结果。在一些实施例中,将抖动掩模应用于图像数据包括将抖动后数据映射到帧的多个子帧图样,也可以包括利用映射后数据产生数据信号。可以将第一抖动掩模应用于每个偶数帧,并且可以将第二抖动掩模应用于每个奇数帧。另外的抖动掩模和另外的排列也是有益的。在一些实施例中,使用接收到的抖动掩模,尽管在其它的实施例中不使用接收到的抖动掩模,而是使用两个或多个另外的抖动掩模。在一些实施例中,当产生另外的抖动掩模时,将一个或多个另外的抖动掩模充分应用于图像数据。因此,在一些实施例中,将仅仅另外的抖动掩模的部分或无另外的抖动掩模存储在存储器中。在这种实施例中,一旦使用,那么另外的抖动掩模的数据就被丢掉。这样,减少了执行方法100的硬件所需的存储器。

Claims (12)

1.一种平板显示器,包括:
存储抖动掩模的查找表;
抖动单元,被配置成基于存储在所述查找表中的所述抖动掩模产生至少一个另外的抖动掩模,以及在每个连续帧周期期间将不同的抖动掩模应用于图像数据以产生抖动后数据;其中所述抖动后数据的被感知的灰度级数大于所述图像数据的被感知的灰度级数;以及
子帧映射单元,被配置成将所述抖动后数据映射到包含在一帧中的多个子帧数据图样,以及输出映射后数据,
其中所述抖动单元包括:
计算器,被配置成产生所述至少一个另外的抖动掩模;以及
抖动模块,被配置成产生所述抖动后数据。
2.根据权利要求1所述的平板显示器,进一步包括:
数据驱动单元,被配置成接收所述映射后数据,利用所述映射后数据产生数据信号,以及向所述平板显示器的数据线提供所产生的数据信号;
扫描驱动单元,被配置成向扫描线提供扫描信号;以及
多个像素,被分别布置在所述数据线和所述扫描线的交叉点附近,并且根据所述数据信号在每个子帧周期期间发光或不发光。
3.根据权利要求1所述的平板显示器,其中所述计算器通过从包含在所述存储在所述查找表中的抖动掩模中的所有数中减去一个数,产生所述至少一个另外的抖动掩模。
4.根据权利要求3所述的平板显示器,其中所述一个数通过将1加到由所述存储在所述查找表中的抖动掩模的行数与列数相乘所获得的值中而产生。

10.根据权利要求9所述的驱动平板显示器的方法,其中所述一个数通过将1加到由所述存储的抖动掩模的行数与列数相乘所获得的值中而产生。
11.根据权利要求7所述的驱动平板显示器的方法,其中所述产生至少一个另外的抖动掩模通过交换关于所述存储的抖动掩模的对角线对称的数来进行。
12.根据权利要求7所述的驱动平板显示器的方法,其中所述产生至少一个另外的抖动掩模通过交换关于所述存储的抖动掩模的横向中心轴或纵向中心轴对称的数来进行。
