图1示出了设备10,在该设备10中,功率管理逻辑12基于操作系统(OS)调度16来控制处理器14的空闲。处理器14可以具有单内核或多内核的体系结构,并且该处理器14可以包括精简指令集计算机(RISC)、流水线处理器、复杂指令集计算机(CISC)等。因而,所示处理器14能够执行诸如OS软件等程序代码/指令,并且还可以包括取指单元、指令解码器、执行单元等(未示出)。此外,设备10可以使用诸如互补型金属氧化物半导体(COMS)工艺的硬件技术、控制器固件、微码、软件技术及其任何结合来实现。
所示设备10还包括同步逻辑22,用于使处理器14的空闲与一个或多个装置24的空闲同步。装置24可以是系统总线、存储器装置、时钟源、控制器等。通过创建这种宽平台空闲方案,设备10能够在节电方面更加积极。另外,基于OS调度16进行同步,这具有相对高的粒度水平,设备10能够在功率管理活动上获得更大的稳定性和更加多的解决方案(resolution)。
OS调度
如已经指明的那样,OS调度16可以用于在相对精细的粒度水平上迫使处理器14进入和退出空闲状态。例如,可以将OS调度16实现为周期性中断,该周期性中断由定时器产生并将其编程为例如10-15ms的值。如果所示处理器14处于空闲状态,例如Advanced Configuration and Power Interface(如,ACPI技术规范,Rev.3.0,2003年9月2日)的C1-C3状态之一,那么该处理器14不活动,并且消耗相对低的功率量。当OS调度定时器递减计数时,定时器可以产生到处理器14的中断,其中,该中断可以唤醒处理器14进入活动/执行状态。在ACPI中,将活动状态称为C0状态。在唤醒后,所示处理器14开始执行OS所安排的工作负荷。当完成工作负荷时,处理器14可以返回到一种空闲状态,直到检测到下一个OS调度定时器中断。因而,功率管理逻辑12能够检测诸如OS调度定时器中断等事件,响应于该事件将处理器14设置于活动状态,以及如果处理器准备进入空闲状态则使处理器14离开活动状态。该过程可以根据OS调度16周期性地重复。
图2说明了OS调度16,其中每隔10-15ms发出定时器中断18,以唤醒处理器。结果,处理器被设置于活动状态并且开始在活动周期20期间执行OS所安排的工作负荷。当完成所安排的工作负荷时,处理器可以在空闲周期26期间返回到空闲状态,直到检测到下一个OS调度定时器中断。在所示实例中,处理器在空闲状态中用去大约OS调度16的95%。已经确定的是,许多使用模型都是这样的情况。例如,在一个移动工作负荷基准中,处理器可能用去大部分的时间而仅仅是等待用户输入。应当注意的是,在常规方法下,平台/系统的其他部分在这些空闲周期26期间可以不必活动。在所示实施例中,可以将空闲周期26灵活运用在整个平台上,以实现更大的节电。
空闲同步
现在转到图3,更加详细地示出了一种使多个装置的空闲与OS调度16同步的方法。在所示实例中,在OS调度16中,定义了活动窗口(AW)28和空闲窗口(IW)30,其中AW 28与处理器的活动状态相关联,而IW 30与处理器的空闲状态相关联。因为所示的OS调度16在给定时间间隔期间是固定的,并且AW 28基于处理器的工作负荷而变化,所以对于每个定时器中断,计算/预测IW 30都可以达到很大程度的确定性。特别地,可以基于处理器的定时器时钟同步等待时间32来确定IW 30,其中OS调度的定时功能使用了独立于主系统时钟的定时器时钟。在这点上,无论处理器什么时候准备进入空闲状态,处理器都可能需要使用定时器时钟,这是因为主系统时钟可以在IW 30期间断电。因此,必须与定时器时钟同步。通过允许每一个装置24在AW 28期间活动并且在IW 30期间阻止该活动,所示实施例为装置24创建了高度有序的功率控制环境,其中所述装置24例如是系统总线、中断、存储器装置、时钟源以及控制器。这种环境可以使系统行为更加确定并且可以实现更加积极的节电技术。
例如,在所示实施例中,所述阻止包括在下一个AW以前延迟总线事务、延迟中断、暂停存储器刷新、关闭到时钟源的电源以及关闭到系统/控制器组合逻辑的电源。组合逻辑的元件通常具有至少一个输出通道和一个或多个输入通道,所有通道的特征在于离散状态。这样,在任何时刻,每一输出通道的状态可以由输入通道在相同时刻的状态完全确定。通过选择性地对这种逻辑进行通电和断电,能够实现实质上的节电。在由此产生的方案中,所有装置可以一起工作一起睡眠。
还可以看出的是,可以在IW 30接近结束的退出周期34(34a-34c)期间启动空闲退出过程,这取决于装置。例如,存储器控制器可以在退出周期34a期间运行退出暂停刷新程序,以便于存储器准备下一个AW 28。类似地,对于任何已经关闭的锁相环(PLL),可以在退出周期34b期间执行PLL预热程序。在所示实例中,对于任何可能已经在IW 30期间关闭的组合逻辑,还可以在退出周期34c期间进行加电程序。因为IW 30的长度可以关联到OS 16,并且因此是已知的,所以可以进行空闲退出过程,而不必延迟下一个AW 28。
图4更加详细地示出了退出过程方案的一个实例。特别地,动态随机存取存储器(DRAM)装置可以与暂停刷新退出周期34a相关联,其中暂停刷新退出周期34a对应于暂停刷新时间“TSR”。主时钟可以与PLL锁定退出周期34b相关联,其中PLL锁定退出周期34b对应于PLL锁定时间“TPLL”。组合逻辑可以与通电退出时间34c相关联,其中通电退出时间34c对应于通电时间“TPO”和启动时间“TINIT”。这样,DRAM、主时钟以及组合逻辑每个都可以为OS调度16中的下一个活动窗口作准备。
现在转到图5,示出了用于发出OS调度事件“TSCH#”的调度定时器38和用于启动空闲退出过程的预定时逻辑36。特别地,所示调度定时器38包括定时器时钟输入40和计数器42,该计数器42从初始计数值“TSCH”开始递减计数。在个人计算机(PC)系统中,调度定时器38可以是产生IRQ0中断的8254定时器,其中,所述中断将处理器从其空闲状态中唤醒;然而,可以使用许多类型的定时器逻辑来执行该功能,并且实施例并不局限于8254的实现方式。例如,在一些PC系统中,使用RTC,即实时时钟来产生OS调度定时,而在其它情况中使用HPET,即高精度事件定时器;可以使实施例围绕任何OS调度定时逻辑工作。定时器时钟输入40可以接收时钟信号,其中该时钟信号独立于向处理器提供的主时钟信号。在一个实施例中,定时器时钟信号是14MHz的信号,而主时钟信号具有更高的频率,例如1GHz。当计数器42达到零时,其能够产生OS调度事件TSCH#,再装入初始计数值并且重新开始过程。OS可以改变频率,通过改变初始计数值来以该频率发出调度事件,所述初始计数值可以存储在适当的寄存器中。如上所述,OS调度事件可以用于创建/确定活动窗口。OS可以改变OS调度的时间间隔,但是该时间间隔将保持恒定直到其被再次改变。预定时逻辑可以自动调节,以使OS通过将预定时逻辑值与来自OS硬件调度定时器38的正在运行的计数值44的实际值进行比较来改变其定时器时间间隔。
所示预定时逻辑36将正在运行的计数值44锁存在多个比较模块46中,多个比较模块46将正在运行的计数值44与适当的退出周期值进行比较。当达到退出周期值时,可以由触发器48产生必要的信号(如,TPA#、TSR#、TPLL#),这还使用了定时器时钟输入40,以启动相应的空闲退出过程。取决于环境,调度定时器38和预定时逻辑36可以位于中央或分布在整个平台上。

应当首先注意的是,系统50大部分时间是空闲的,并且当执行中等工作负荷时也是空闲的(如,什么都不做)。如果系统50在90%的时间是空闲的,并且(通常)装置在空闲时什么都不做,那么可以更容易地迫使块I/O装置在空闲时以该方式工作。如果空闲同步仅用于增强空闲系统的行为,那么可以获得大约90%的利益,同时避免了90%的与块I/O装置的行为有关的困难。

2.根据权利要求1所述的设备,其中,所述同步逻辑在所述OS调度中的活动窗口期间允许所述装置的活动,并且在所述OS调度中的空闲窗口期间阻止所述活动,所述活动窗口与所述处理器的活动状态相关联,而不活动窗口与所述处理器的空闲状态相关联。

4.根据权利要求2所述的设备,其中,所述同步逻辑用于基于所述处理器的定时器时钟同步等待时间来确定所述活动窗口。
5.根据权利要求1所述的设备,其中,所述功率管理逻辑用于检测事件,响应于所述事件将所述处理器设置于活动状态,如果所述处理器准备进入空闲状态则使所述处理器离开所述活动状态,以及根据所述OS调度周期性地重复所述检测、设置和离开。
6.根据权利要求5所述的设备,其中,所述功率管理逻辑用于如果所述处理器准备进入所述空闲状态,则使所述处理器同步到定时器时钟。
7.根据权利要求1所述的设备,其中,所述同步逻辑用于使多个装置中的每一个的空闲与所述处理器的所述空闲同步。
8.根据权利要求1所述的设备,其中,所述同步逻辑用于基于包含所述装置和所述处理器的系统的空闲来选择性地使所述装置的空闲与所述处理器的空闲同步。
9.一种方法,包括:
基于操作系统(OS)调度来控制处理器的空闲;以及
使至少一个装置的空闲与所述处理器的所述空闲同步;以及在所述OS调度中的空闲窗口接近结束时启动空闲退出过程,以使所述装置的活动与所述OS调度中的活动窗口同步。
10.根据权利要求9所述的方法,其中,所述同步包括:
在所述OS调度中的活动窗口期间,允许所述装置的活动,所述活动窗口与所述处理器的活动状态相关联;以及
在所述OS调度中的空闲窗口期间,阻止所述活动,所述空闲窗口与所述处理器的空闲状态相关联。
11.根据权利要求10所述的方法,其中,所述阻止从包括下列的组中选择:延迟总线上的事务、延迟中断、暂停存储器的刷新、关断到时钟源的电源、以及关断到控制器的组合逻辑的电源。
12.根据权利要求10所述的方法,进一步包括基于所述处理器的定时器时钟同步等待时间来确定所述空闲窗口。
13.根据权利要求9所述的方法,其中,所述控制包括:
检测事件;
响应于所述事件将所述处理器设置于活动状态;
如果所述处理器准备进入空闲状态,则使所述处理器离开所述活动状态;以及
根据所述OS调度周期性地重复所述检测、设置和离开。
14.根据权利要求13所述的方法,进一步包括:如果所述处理器准备进入所述空闲状态,则使所述处理器同步到定时器时钟。
15.根据权利要求9所述的方法,其中,所述同步包括使多个装置中的每一个的空闲与所述处理器的所述空闲同步。
16.根据权利要求9所述的方法,进一步包括基于包含所述装置和所述处理器的系统的空闲来使所述装置的所述空闲与所述处理器的所述空闲同步。
17.一种系统,包括:
处理器,其具有存储器控制器;
功率管理逻辑,用于基于操作系统(OS)调度来控制所述处理器的空闲;以及
同步逻辑,用于使至少一个装置的空闲与所述处理器的所述空闲同步,其中,所述同步逻辑在所述OS调度中的活动窗口期间允许所述装置的活动,并且在所述OS调度中的空闲窗口期间阻止所述活动,所述活动窗口与所述处理器的活动状态相关联,而不活动窗口与所述处理器的空闲状态相关联,所述同步逻辑包括预定时逻辑,用于在所述OS调度中的空闲窗口接近结束时启动空闲退出过程,以使所述装置的活动与所述OS调度中的活动窗口同步。
18.根据权利要求17所述的系统,其中,所述同步逻辑从包括下列逻辑的组中选择:总线逻辑,用于延迟总线上的事务;存储器逻辑,用于暂停存储器的刷新;时钟逻辑,用于关断到时钟源的电源;以及控制器逻辑,用于关断到控制器的组合逻辑的电源。
19.根据权利要求17所述的系统,其中,所述功率管理逻辑用于检测事件,响应于所述事件将所述处理器设置于活动状态,如果所述处理器准备进入空闲状态则使所述处理器离开所述活动状态,以及根据所述OS调度周期性地重复所述检测、设置和离开。
20.根据权利要求17所述的系统,其中,所述同步逻辑用于使多个装置中的每一个的空闲与所述处理器的所述空闲同步。
21.根据权利要求17所述的系统,其中,所述同步逻辑用于基于所述系统的空闲来选择性地使所述装置的所述空闲与所述处理器的所述空闲同步。
22.一种方法,包括:
检测事件;
响应于所述事件将所述处理器设置于活动状态;
如果所述处理器处于所述活动状态,则允许多个装置中的每一个的活动;
如果所述处理器准备进入空闲状态,则使所述处理器离开所述活动状态;
如果所述处理器处于所述空闲状态,则阻止所述多个装置中的每一个的活动;
在OS调度中的空闲窗口接近结束时启动空闲退出过程,以使所述装置的活动与所述OS调度中的活动窗口同步;以及
根据操作系统(OS)调度周期性地重复所述检测、设置、允许、离开和阻止。
23.根据权利要求22所述的方法,其中,所述阻止从包括下列的组中选择:延迟总线上的事务、延迟中断、暂停存储器的刷新、关断到时钟源的电源、以及关断到控制器的组合逻辑的电源。
24.根据权利要求22所述的方法,其中,所述阻止包括强迫执行所述OS调度中的空闲窗口,所述空闲窗口与所述处理器的所述空闲状态相关联。
